Hands up if you dress your baby boy in baby girl tights

when it's really cold. Socks are bloody useless, and who's going to know that he's wearing tights under his trousers?

Come to think of it, what is wrong with retailers that you can't buy baby tights specially designed for little boys?

"do you really think we need this in the UK ?"

Don't know about where you live, but it's been subzero all week here, down to -12, and it's currently -6. Loving this thread -- baby long johns rock.

and steam engines tights so cool! would put them in DS's Christmas stocking except I suspect the delivery wouldn't get to us through the snow in time for Christmas!

I used to put tights on my Ds1 when he was a baby, hes 18 next week and I was 16 at the time, made perfect sense to me! Smile

Oblomov · 20/12/2010 09:47

we have -7 too. But playing out in the snow for a short time, is not the same as living in it permanently.
Russian cold is different to ours. Ours is damp. Theirs is dry.
I find their -27 easier to deal with than our -3. But I still can't see that ours requires boys tights.

LeMarron · 20/12/2010 10:22

I do. DS is 5 months. I've had some looks at baby rhyme time, but stuff. It's cold.

LeMarron · 20/12/2010 10:27

I do not put him in trouser and jackets, he is in his babygros all day. (this is why people see he has tights when I take his outdoor stuff off. ) I've had some looks about that too ('why don't you buy him real clothes...' SIL), but he looks so warm and snuggly in babygros so i prefer it.

LaWeaselMys · 20/12/2010 10:35

I love tights are DD wears them loads. Perfect under ski trews or in snowsuits too, so they don't overheat.

I am one of those adults that gets really cold outside anyway, and I wear tights/leggings under my trousers, so if I didn't do the same for my kids (in properly cold weather) I'd feel really mean.

roadkillbunny · 20/12/2010 10:49

My ds is 2.9 years old and when it is really cold he wears tights under his trousers, I have an older dd as well so he just wears her old tights what ever colour or patten they have, with trousers over the top and often socks as well nobody would ever know, ds is really quite fond of his pink spotty tights and doesn't want to take them off. He also likes dressing up in his sisters princess/fairy dress up clothes, I fail to see why he shouldn't if he enjoys it!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 20/12/2010 10:58

Well, in the absence of Russian cold (love the throwaway reference there Wink) in the UK I think I'll continue with the tights in our Scottish winter (and -3 would be lovely). If it keeps DS warm I'm not about to deny him based on the fact that we're not in Russia!

TheOldestCat · 20/12/2010 11:01

DS (10 months) is currently sporting some of DD's most pink and flowery tights. It's a great look.

Tori27 · 20/12/2010 11:05

In a baby I'd probably use a babygro for extra warmth under neath (but then I didn't attempt tights on a baby (DD) until she was 7 months old - she was far too wriggly for that!

In this weather, just make sure he's warm - probably not a good idea when he's older.

UK record is -20 and it's been -19 around here this week.

One of the advantages I find with tights is that my youngest is lanky (short but lanky lol) she's in 3-6m for her waist and 6-9 for her length, we tend to dress her for her waist otherwise she crawls or steps out of clothes that are too big. So she wears trousers that are too short and tights that cover every bit of exposed leg.

BTW, she's 2 years old in 2 weeks!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 20/12/2010 21:13

Try -27.2 in Braemar in 1982 up the road from us - that was the coldest ever recorded, and boy do I remember that winter!

confuddledDOTcom · 20/12/2010 21:19

My apologies, I just remembered "coldest temperature on record" and "-20". It was on a local programme last night and they were talking about England not the UK.

gapbear · 20/12/2010 21:24

Both my sons wore navy or white tights during winter as babies, up until about the age of 18 months.

It get rids of that gap between sock and trousers when you put them in the sling. Nobody ever knew.
