Hands up if you dress your baby boy in baby girl tights

when it's really cold. Socks are bloody useless, and who's going to know that he's wearing tights under his trousers?

Come to think of it, what is wrong with retailers that you can't buy baby tights specially designed for little boys?

Tights for small children are tights for small children - why girls'? They are the obvious cold weather wear.
And as for men who demur....irrational and a bit pathetic.

serin · 19/12/2010 20:50

My 10 yr old and 8yr old DS's both wear their sisters cast offs under their jodphurs for riding. Too bloody cold otherwise!

VickstaS · 19/12/2010 20:55

Have never dressed DS in tights, but do leave a babygro on under trousers, and put socks on top.

1980Sport · 19/12/2010 20:55

My sis sends me boys tights from Germany and my ds (3 months) was definitely wearing them today when were out and it was minus 7!

AnathemaDevice · 19/12/2010 20:59

DS (20 months) has these tights. I almost bought him plain ones, but he chose these ones in the shop himself- I don't think they're particularly girly, but, even if they were, what does it matter? He likes them and his legs are warm.

Obolmov, I don't think it's a new thing- my brother wore tights as a toddler in winter, and he's 27 now.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 19/12/2010 21:13

I used to put DS1 and 2 in red/navy/green tights under their trousers when it was cold. Trousers would ride up in the pushchair, plus I found they'd get very chilly if they had long periods just sitting in it. Once they were walking more the exercise would warm them up!

lazylula · 19/12/2010 21:15

Both mine, 5 and 2 had leggings on under their trousers today. I bought them yesterday to add an extra layer.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 19/12/2010 21:19

I do - but I do steer clear of pink ones. He's nearly 4 and has very definite ideas of what's a boy thing and what's a girl thing. His 13 year old brother doesn't help

domeafavour · 19/12/2010 21:38

I never knew people did this, it would never have occurred to me. Girls wear tights because they wear skirts and dresses. Boys wear trousers, why do they need tights as well?!! Don't think it's girly, just not sure why it's necessary.

SkiingGardeningTwinklyBauble · 19/12/2010 21:48

We have tights for DS (6 months) as his legs can gEt very cold otherwise. Unfortunately the only pack I could get have hearts on 2 of the pairs, might be off to H&Mmor tykes tights!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 19/12/2010 21:52

Domeafavour - it just provides an extra layer of warmth, in the same way that longjohns do. I've not been able to source LJs for the 3 year old, they probably do exist somewhere, but tights are so easy to find.

chipmonkey · 19/12/2010 21:52

Oblomov, don't you think the current weather is somewhat icelandic?

I have done this with ds3 and ds4 at the suggestion of the nursery manager. Not all winter but on these very cold days, I think it's best to have another layer.

The other reason is that they can easily pull socks off. You can't pull tights off if you have your trousers on!Grin

annoyingdevil · 19/12/2010 22:20

Yes ds (4) had his sister's grey school cast-offs on yesterday. He did wee in them though, which could have been a protest (he's a very boyish boy)

nicm · 19/12/2010 22:30

yes i use them for ds. haven't got round to using them this year as i just remembered to buy them! Blush will have to dig them out. h&m and name it sell boys ones, but i just bought ds black ones.

:)

confuddledDOTcom · 19/12/2010 23:16

I don't have boys but I would if I did. My girls wear tights under trousers, why should my (theoretical) boys be colder than them?

Must have a look at the H&M boys tights, my youngest is mad on anything with wheels!

LittlePushka · 19/12/2010 23:32

Yes, all the time up to them being about two. Bloomin' socks never stay on tiny feet and their little thighs would feel so cold! It is very common in Scandinavian countries - I was told this by a Norwegian lady who commented one time in a changing room that that over there, there are loads of lovely designs specifically available for boys.

I dont put them in tights now but I do buy fleecy PJ's specifically for the winter and they wear them under their jeans/sweat pants when they go to play out.

snowybun · 19/12/2010 23:50

I have used tights for my 6 year old he is so slim and gets cold quick. I have only done this whilst not at school and would not put him in tights for school.

I did this all the time when DS was tiny. Why ever not?! I also used to dress him in babygros under dungarees, which I thought looked rather stylish.

Tortington · 20/12/2010 00:03

no one cares if babies wear tights, its the only way to keep socks on.

confuddledDOTcom · 20/12/2010 00:16

Dome, do you not put tights under girls trousers?

MangoTango · 20/12/2010 00:17

These are thermal and come in navy, black and dark grey. www.marksandspencer.com/Pairs-Cotton-Blend-Thermal-Tights/dp/B003T9C3I6?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_3&sr=1-3&qid=1292804084&pf_rd_r=0Y2EZDJJSWN0G9HNKE82&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=57489031&pf_rd_p=215570647&pf_rd_s=related-items-3
They start at age 3-4, but i always find it best to buy a few sizes up with tights anyway.

domeafavour · 20/12/2010 05:29

I don't have ang girls, confuddled, but I don't think it would occur to me! Maybe once you have girls, you get used to tights and they make more sense.

PassTheTwiglets · 20/12/2010 08:51

I don't put tights on my DS but only because i hate the sodding things!! I rarely put them on DD either. I just think they are too difficult to get on and off, not to mention that they are way too hard for DS to pull up and down when going to the loo. I have thermal leggings for mine which go under their trousers and I tuck them into their socks - much easier. I never wear tights myself either though, as I find them incredibly uncomfortable, so maybe I am just tights-phobic :o

monkeyflippers · 20/12/2010 09:10

I used to put normal clothes over babygrows which I suppose has the same affect.
