To open MIL's hideous presents early so I can exchange them?!

MIL buys my DD the most hideous looking granny type dresses - I have opened that part of the pressie so I can take it and exhabge it for some of the nicer dresses this high street chain does - I need to do it now before they go down in price after Xmas!

I mean, it is quite obvious how I dress my DD but she still buys her the most awful dresses! Yuk?

AIBU?

Need to see the dresses before I can decide if YABU or not Grin

stressheaderic · 18/12/2010 21:42

Is it this by any chance

alleged granny from 1800s dress

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 18/12/2010 21:47

Surely can't be this one , the only muted dress I can find on the Next website with an accessory. It is lovely.

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 18/12/2010 21:49

x post stress. Lovely dress, don't you think? Can't be that one.

BertieBottlesOfMulledWine · 18/12/2010 21:54

It's horrible but it's not that bad! Grin

BertieBottlesOfMulledWine · 18/12/2010 21:58

Please say this is the other one, it's hilarious. WTF?

kittya · 18/12/2010 22:00

I think its fine but you wouldnt get alot of wear out of it.

Lonnie · 18/12/2010 22:02

I missed this thread yesterday as I was ill and in bed so I have just read 7 pages worth..

firstly OP YABU to open a christmas prefent before christmas no matter if you suspect it is stuff you dont like or not esp not when you basically did it for financial gain.

Exchanging it I dont actually have an issue over but not before christmas it was a CHRISTMAS gift hence it should not be open before chrismtas.

I have to say however I have sat with my mouth open reading your responses to people.

You have told people yuck yuck yuck grow up. to fuck off , told someone you think they are talking shite. called someone sanctimonious stated " it is interesting how catty it can get here" well from where I have read you have been the worst.

the fact you wont say what dress it is also to me is suspecious and frankly you posted on AIBU if you wanted to be told you were utterly fair you should have gone elsewhere.

I wil however state I too have dressed my childrne in stuff I didnt care for because people I did care for or my husband cared for gave it for us. it hasnt harmed my kids and it didnt me either..

Never before has a 'like' button been so needed on MN.

shirleyhyypia · 18/12/2010 22:31

YANBU :)

Plus, not sure if anyone already suggested this, but if you take it back now and get a credit note (which you can obv do without a receipt), you can then get two or more dresses after xmas in the sale!!!

shirleyhyypia · 18/12/2010 22:33

No point keeping it for the sake of it when it wont be worn

earwicga · 18/12/2010 22:38

You're welcome MsKalo . Merry Christmas to you and your nicely dressed family :)

diddl · 19/12/2010 07:56

I think the one with the shrug is too big a pattern for a baby, but not hideous.

The denim one has a cat similar to the Hello Kitty thing so I can see why she bought that.

I´m not sure that anyone who buys Hello Kitty should be commenting on someone elses bad taste tbhGrin

MsKLo · 19/12/2010 08:01

It wasn't eithe of those dresses

And Lonnie fuck off - there you go, more aggression for you to be open mouthed at

pommedeterre · 19/12/2010 08:06

All those dresses are a billion times nicer than Hello Kitty which is tat tat tat.
I am soo curious about what it is now though.
For what it's worth MsKalo I think YABatadU. Everyone suffers the MILs taste from hell don't they? I've had some awful stuff bought for me in the past and now dd has some shockers in her wardrobe too. Comes in useful for nursery changes of clothes sometimes.
I've never thought about the differing taste as offensive though - just her taste.

supernoodlesrock · 19/12/2010 08:29

Oh FGS she's only exchanging the dresses for something that her dd will wear more often! Even if she loved her mil I can't see anything wrong with that.

Sometimes things get over analysed on here.

MsKLo · 19/12/2010 08:38

THANKYOU supernoodles! at last, some perspective! You would think I hit people with the kind of sanctimonious crap that is coming out of some people! And if I have been aggressive it is only when people have been rude to me! I don't mind that people have different taste but some of the so called ladies Herr think it is perfectly fine to demonise and attack me. When people have left replies that don't agree but that don't attack, that is fine! But some of the high and mighty crap from some women here has made me tell them to fuck off! But some of these high and mighty women just can't see it...

diddl · 19/12/2010 09:36

"I don't mind that people have different taste"

But you do when it concerns MIL by the sounds of it.

diddl · 19/12/2010 09:38

"Oh FGS she's only exchanging the dresses for something that her dd will wear more often!"

Well that´s not strictly true as OPs daughter is a baby & unlikely to give a shit.

She´s exchanging for things that she will put her daughter in.

MsKLo · 19/12/2010 09:38

No not really, only when I don't like them! I have kept most of the dresses she has bought :-)

TheParasiteofChristmasPast · 19/12/2010 09:43

yabu for not linking to the dresses

Lonnie · 19/12/2010 09:47

MsKlo Perspective???

then why did you post on AIBU?

I stand by what I said YABU to open a present before christmas for financial gain..

and you from what I have seen here need a serious lesson in how to speak to people as you come accross as very badly mannered.

I think I might need a taste check up! all the dress linked look really lovely to me!

OP I think YABU because opening the present befor the day to check it is not horrible is very rude. Give your MIL a chance instead of expecting her to have baught something grannylike Your MIL spent time and money choosing something for her DGD you could be a little bit more grateful for it.
