Well am I?

Just looked on seraphine.co.uk for a maternity top I saw in a magazine and they have it in small, medium and large.

The large is a size 12-14!

I'm in Canada at the moment, and quite put out that at my favourite clothes store I am now labelled a Large, where as in their old measurements I was a 9/10. However they have clothes from xxs to xxL so as a 12 I really am a M/L.

I am hourglass with a round but pertish bum, broad shoulders and a narrow waist (with a rounded tummy) I'm the same sort of build as Carey from King of Queens before she had the baby, which isn't fat, but certainly isn't small like my size 8/10 and 5' nothing mate. I have huge body image issues and see myself as a 16+ in the mirror. I'm 5'5".

What I really hate are the people who come on and say there is no such thing as 'big boned'. So, we can have petite, we can have short, we can have tall, but at no stage can us women with wider hips & rib cages and shoulders be anything other than fat. FFS.

Lotster · 16/12/2010 16:34

Just found this BMI calculator - apparently it makes me BMI 21.15

So that's well in the healthy range - yet I somtimes (due to my height) wear a 14 which someone said on here is large.

Maybe I am large (I am quite a big bird!), but I think it has nothing to do with being fat, so perhaps I/we shouldn't always be offended by the term Large as it's not always about weight.

nappyaddict · 16/12/2010 16:37

Exactly Lotser it is to do with height/build not always being fat.

mumbar · 16/12/2010 16:39

TW has a point about size 12 and 30" waist.

I wanted to order something from a catalogue and goggled measurements and size chart. Now I'm normally a 12, sometimes 14.

Measured myself - checked chart - size needed - size 16. I'm not saying that is big its average but its made me think that the size charts are old and clothing is made differently nowadays.

dinkystinky · 16/12/2010 16:40

Can I just say - Seraphine sizings come up really big (v stretchy material for the most part, and tall ladies, the trousers are definitely made for 6 ft tall amazons) so if you're a size 12 you'd actually probably want to try the small size regardless of their size guide...

I'm 5ft 4 and a size 10-12. Happy with my size - look neither too thin nor too large. Who cares if others think my size is large - I'm happy in my skin, and in my clothes, and that's what counts.

PotPourri · 16/12/2010 16:41

Man, I used to be a 10 but many babies later am a 14. This guts me. Going up 2 sizes makes me feel rubbish. To then hear that the sizes have got bigger makes me feel really bad now.

Having said that, my friends and work colleagues regularly tell me I look slim, so either they are lying or perceptions have changed or I have great clothes (hmm, not likely!)

mumbar · 16/12/2010 16:43

OMG Shock I've just been on Lotsters BMI calculator. BMI 23.91 so pretty normal. I am a pear shape but am very shocked to realise that my waist measurement (32") is apparently putting me at great risk of diabetes. Its my slimmest part!!

Lotster · 16/12/2010 16:49

Hi Dinky Smile Haven't seen you for a while.

naughtymummy · 16/12/2010 16:50

64-65kg, around 10st I think,I think I look best at 60.

LionessLady · 16/12/2010 16:51

It completely depends on body shape. I'm 5'6"and have to buy Size 16 tops. This, yes, does sound much too big for my size, but it's because I have 30H breasts - I'm a Size 10 bottom!

mumbar · 16/12/2010 16:51

Oh memories 65kg Grin Kissed goodbye to that at 18 weeks pg and never got back. Blush More like 69/70 now. Shock

dinkystinky · 16/12/2010 16:52

Hi Lotster - nice to see you too Smile How're your little ones doing?

I really don't know what size of UK clothes to get. I used to be 8/10 before kids. That's all changed. Anything between 10 and 14 usually works. When I make my own clothes, I'm 16/18. Pretty large for someone who is often thought of as skinny!!

naughtymummy · 16/12/2010 17:00

As a student I was 54, felt ( and thought I looked) great

mumbar · 16/12/2010 17:02

adverse I do know mine!! Measured myself last week when DS found a tape measure. I'm quite tall though with a normal BMI - my saving grace Xmas Grin

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 16/12/2010 17:04

Lioness agree
I have 44 hips and a 29 inch waist. I have to wear 14s otherwise they wont go over my hips yet I'm being labelled as big and large. I'm 5foot 11 and have a pretty flat stomach (slight bag due to loose skin from 4 kids)

I had finally started feeling good about myself as I didn't feel I was carrying fat yet this thread has made me feel crap again. Better not eat over Christmas eh and remember why I stopped reading mn religiously

Lotster · 16/12/2010 17:05

Great thanks Dinky - can't believe our little ones are two months off two years old eh? Those labour threads seem like yesterday...

Happy Chrimbo Xmas Smile

naughtymummy · 16/12/2010 17:05

I have a 28' waist, I have a lovelypair of 27s which I squeeze into they look like s**t :(

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 16/12/2010 17:05

Advers I remember those days. I used to be able to fit a glowstick around my waist. I was thin though, it was my natural weight but it was thin enough that I was described as the grim reaper amongst other names

LionessLady · 16/12/2010 17:09

norfolkBRONZEturkey I know the feeling. No matter how much weight I lose, I still have these hoofing great lumps to deal with!

naughtymummy · 16/12/2010 17:09

But bronze if you are 5'11 and you have a 29' waist you are definately not fat, size 14 is probrably perfect for you. Large dose'nt mean fat ffs.

civil · 16/12/2010 17:12

There's definitely such a thing as big boned...I have very wide shoulders and huge hands. (Neither which have any fat on at all!)

naughtymummy · 16/12/2010 17:13

Must repeat to self you have a BMI within the normal range you have two healthy children, you take regular exercise, there is more to life than being a size 8 ad infinitum....

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 16/12/2010 17:13

Naughty I think the problem is that so as not to insult people everyone has taken to using the phrase larger ladies for fat women. Meaning that being called large makes you feel like they're calling you fat.

Ahh well makes a change from lanky
