You're wrong! Colliers cheddar is the best and also Pilgrim's Choice extra mature - it's all strong and crunchy and grainy. Yum.

misdee · 09/12/2010 13:19

ooo i forgot about pilgrams choice. i never actually go to shops anymore :( so dont get a chance to look.

so must try colliers. and pilgrams choice when i next do online shop.

Tickler is the best

But Cathedral City is the best once 'cooked'. One toast, on top of pies etc

radiohelen · 09/12/2010 13:23

Keens cheddar is our favourite proper cheese. We all love it but then my lo will sit and gnaw at a block of parmesan. Very useful for teething... all that calcium Wink Our every day cheese is that McClelland Seriously Strong or the Sainos Organic mature cheddar. Both OK.

harvalp · 09/12/2010 13:23

+1 Colliers...

SkyBluePearl · 09/12/2010 13:27

its cheap and cheerful in my mind - good for weekday sandwiches. I prefer something more mature and scrummy though.

GrimmaTheNome · 09/12/2010 13:32

Of the mass-produced cheeses, I like the Wyke Farms Vintage cheddar best at the moment.

Sometimes if we want a lower fat one we get the lighter Cathedral City one. It passes muster with DD so can't be too bad.

Animation · 09/12/2010 13:35

I like cheese. All kinds of cheeses - but the price of cheese is another matter.

DasherandSmugly · 09/12/2010 13:44

YABU Montgomery is the best cheddar.

scaryteacher · 09/12/2010 15:33

Montgomery from the Cheese shop in Tavistock is the best ever.

scaryteacher · 09/12/2010 15:36

However, the farmhouse cheddar that the local deli sells is pretty good considering I'm just outside Brussels. It is 24 euros a kilo though...it's a treat now.

Kreecher - Gruyere or Emmenthal, or a Beaufort are the best of what is on offer here for hardish cheese. Delhaize apparently sells cheddar, although I've not seen it yet.

DasherandSmugly · 09/12/2010 16:28

We have a fab cheese shop in Wandsworth that sells it.

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/12/2010 16:30

lol at you lot trying to out cheese ponce each other.

I gave up on cheese after spending thirty sodding pounds on 2 lumps of cheese from the most pretentious cheese shop in Cheltenham.

I am sticking with dairylea.

DasherandSmugly · 09/12/2010 16:39

Ooh no you can't beat good cheese GOML. I love my local cheese shop but it is ludicrously expensive.

mugggletoeandwine · 09/12/2010 16:43

I love cheese. I would marry cheese, really.

But not Cathedral City, that's shite.

I'm dairy free for my asthma but planning on wheezing my way through Xmas day with lots of lovely, poncey and stinky cheeseXmas Grin

FiveColdRingsForSolo · 09/12/2010 16:44

YABU! IMO. I like cheese you can taste and CC is tasteless to me! I buy Pilgrims Choice extra mature, but I do agree with thenightsky Colliers is lovely, but has to be on special for me to buy it.

TabithaTwitchet · 09/12/2010 16:51

Cathedral City is the only one we can get here. The one in the red packet is just about passable in an emergency, the 15 month matured version in the black packet is quite good.
I think my favourite cheddar is Tickler. But actually Sainsbury's own brand organic west country farmhouse is very good too, and is what I fall on ravenously when we are in the UK. Mmmmm, cheddar!

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/12/2010 16:56

I like to source my favourite cheese (Cantal) from an online fromage purveyor based in Mauriac.

(This is a lie, but I do know someone in France who posts me cheese, and Cantal is better tahn cheddar. Just costs a fortune over hjere and you can pick it up for cathedral city prices in France).

I will NOT be conned into paying a fortune by poncey lifestyle business cheese shop oweners.

joydivisionovengloves · 09/12/2010 16:56

Another vote for Tickler here. YABU!

Ormirian · 09/12/2010 16:57

One of my favourite places in the world is Priory Farm near Radstock. It's near Cheddar but much much better than the tacky cheese shops in the touristy bits of the Gorge. In theory you can learn about making cheese that is quite dull TBH, and the main reason to go there is the shop and the cafe. Cheese HEAVEN! Proper cheese

DasherandSmugly · 09/12/2010 16:58

I choose to be conned by poncey lifestyle business cheese shop owners.

DH always brings me fancy French cheese back when he's over there. Haven't tried Cantal though.

Ormirian · 09/12/2010 17:01

I like poncey food purveyors a great deal more than poncy furnishings purveyors Grin

mugggletoeandwine · 09/12/2010 17:05

I know someone in Switzerland who is sourcing me cheeseXmas Grin

God I love poncey food shops.

I wander round the one in town weekly at least. The man in there is always a bit abrupt even though I buy plenty. I think it's because I wear fake uggs and don't talk posh.

HalfTermHero · 09/12/2010 17:10

It is not my favourite, tbh. If you are going for an off the shelfer then Mcclelland Seriously Strong Red is moreish. I love the crunchy crystalised bits.

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/12/2010 17:16

Cantal comes in two types - entre-doux and vieux, whcih is lovely and strong.

have never seen it outside France, but in Cantal itself you can buy a huge lump of it for 5euro or so.

I like those french cheese lorries which you see soemtimes at christmas markets.

GOD I want a fondue now.
