Why the lol at the end? I like Cathedral city although I haven't had it since we left Switzerland. Currently I am experimenting with what the Belgian people call cheese. Most of it, not all, is already sliced and tastes about as nice as the plastic packet it came in.
When we are in England, I love going and buying the stuff that is made on a farm properly.
Cathedral city is passable as cheddar, but not as nice as some artisanal stuff I've had.
cheese is my favourite food stuff. Fact.

Lynzjam · 09/12/2010 12:43

YANBU. It's fabby. Great for eating on its own, on crackers, and in macca cheese. It's scrummy. You can't go wrong with it. Its always in our fridge!

nocake · 09/12/2010 12:46

It's a good everyday cheddar but can't possibly be considered the best. I've had some fabulous hand made cheddar that is far better.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 09/12/2010 12:47

That's what I wanted to say nocake, but got all tied up with other stuff.

thenightsky · 09/12/2010 12:47

Oh... best cheddar is that lovely Welsh Colliers stuff in the black wrapper. It normally sits right beside the Cathedral City in supermarkets.

misdee · 09/12/2010 12:48

lol cos i feel like lol-ing after the night i had.

i miss sampling new cheeses.

but def dont miss xmas pudding cheese.

dh says the worst he tried was a boddingtons ones.

he loves raclette, but to me it smells of very rancid feet.

DP works behind the deli counter at a well-known poncy supermarket in a particularly fancy part of SW London. He brings home all the odds and sods of cheese that are too small to sell for pence. There have been some amazing cheddars and some plain rank ones - thing is, I couldn't tell you which is which (and DP even ends up doubting himself which is which). But I don't think Catherdral City is the best.

Ealingkate · 09/12/2010 12:54

Second vote for Colliers -it's yum.

Ormirian · 09/12/2010 12:55

Montgomery's is the best. But it's too expensive for me to buy all the time. And the DC find it too strong.

Jaquelinehyde · 09/12/2010 12:55

Catherdral City or nothing here...I thought I had died and gone to heaven when Tesco did it as a buy one get two free!!

faverolles · 09/12/2010 12:56

YABU.
The best supermarket cheddar (so not the lovely artisan ones) is Vintage Somerset cheddar.
Makes cathedral city taste like dairylea.

M&S Cornish Cruncher is the best cheddar I've tasted. Strong but really yummy.

Callisto · 09/12/2010 13:02

Godminster is my personal favourite. Cathedral City is too mass produced to be anywhere near the best cheddar.

PsecretSantead · 09/12/2010 13:03

It's the only cheddar we can get here, so it's the best for me, too!

Animation · 09/12/2010 13:04

Nice price too - £2.99 for a massive block this week. Xmas Smile

Himalaya · 09/12/2010 13:05

I used to work on a cheese counter.

The worst one was Munster...smells like feet.

PsecretSantead · 09/12/2010 13:05

It's treble that, here! Definitely a luxury.

Ragwort · 09/12/2010 13:05

oooh yes MollieO the M & S one is fab - have you noticed that if you buy the 'sampler' size for 99p it is cheaper per kilo than the 'normal size pack' (must get a life) Xmas Grin.

Animation · 09/12/2010 13:05

...and a very useful sealable bag - open and closable.

fruitful · 09/12/2010 13:06

It's the nicest one that my children will eat. It scores a lot of points for that!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 09/12/2010 13:07

Very Envy, the one I currently have in a sandwich with coleslaw is a plastic orange job. It is truly vomit-astic. I don't even think that it would make cheese sauce.
Im coming to england in 12 days and will have a total cheese frenzy.

i rather like Applewood smoked cheddar, but for texture, i'd have to go for ....davidstow, or ...god there are so many great cheddars. cathedral city doesn't really figure though, it's good, but not outstanding.
