for feeling smug when mothers of school-agers describe themselves as "Full-time mums" or "Housewives"?

Name change...

Following from the threads about life at home when you don't do voluntary of paid work, although your children are of school-age, I was wondering if anyone else who does work can't help feeling a tad superior? Oh yes, I know I'll be flamed for this, but there it is.

These housewives seem to do all the things that working mothers do (cooking, cleaning, planning etc, etc, etc) but don't have any purpose outside of this. They seem to think that doing the supermarket shopping is a reasonable replacement for a 'real' career. I can't help but feel prejudiced against them.

I'm currently a SAHM as DD is pre-school, but will do paid (and voluntary) work as soon as she's in school. I'm looking forward to building-up my career again and working for the family.

Oh, and before anyone jumps on this, I've always cooked decent-quality meals from scratch, even when I worked v. long hours; my dogs are walked in the early hours; and my house is always clean and tidy. I argue that ironing is for losers, however!

OK. Hard hat on!

who pays mortgage on t'hole.are you hard working mum or lardy sofa wearer

MummyMyfanwy · 29/11/2010 22:07

YABU!

Who gives a shit what other people do or call themselves if they are happy.

You are the type of person who obviously feels the need to stroke your own ego and looking down your nose at others help you do that??

You sound lovely! Perhaps change your name to Superwoman so we can all pat you on the back for being so jolly good at all aspects of life!

Megatron · 29/11/2010 22:07

Why do you care anyway, what's it got to do with you? And what on earth gives you the right to feel smug about something so ridiculous? I work, I do all the usual stuff too but so what. To be honest, I would hate to think that i would ever get to the stage in my life that I would think it was OK to judge, be prejudiced against or 'smug' regarding something so daft. Maybe you need a hobby.

CommanderDrool · 29/11/2010 22:07

Oh I'm lardy.

Fucking bake sales, bunting, boden - you name it.

LadyBlaBlah · 29/11/2010 22:08

People value their own cake baking. Be nice GetOrf.

I made some rice crispy cakes once. Was most proud

CommanderDrool · 29/11/2010 22:10

I just bake all day. There is a lemon drizzle mountain in the pantry.

scottishmummy · 29/11/2010 22:11

people really value pricey shop cakes and not lumpy home made shite.

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/11/2010 22:11

I can't bake a cake to save my life. Have tried about twice. I am absolutely useless.

If I want a cake I get dd to do it, she has some Jane Asher genes in 'er.

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/11/2010 22:12

Don't get me started on cupcake shops charging you bloody the best part of THREE ENGLISH POUNDS for cakes and then looking at you all superciliously.

You work in a CAKE SHOP you jumped up bint.

Grr (this is a perennial MN pet peeve of mine)

A1980 · 29/11/2010 22:13

I know alot of working mums at my place of work.

Many of them wish they didn't have to work but they can't give up as their husband's salary isn't enough to pay for everything...!

If you're happy being a working mum, fine. If you're happy being a SAHM, fine. I don't think it's appropriate to score points or think you're in anyway superior just because you work.

CommanderDrool · 29/11/2010 22:14

Xenia must be on her Panamanian island or liberating SAHMs in Dubai.

But to paraphrase

"if only you women chose sensible careers earning over £200 an hour, you could afford to gave 5 children and x number of nannies and be a happy fulfilled working mother."

Do we have SAHM/WOHM bingo yet??

scottishmummy · 29/11/2010 22:14

no one coos over flat mammie cakes, made by a kyle fan

JamieLeeCurtis · 29/11/2010 22:17

GetOrf - see this is why I have concluded that I must go back to work. I am crap at baking cakes, indifferent about cooking (there's only so much rejection a girl can take), hate sewing (I glue on Cub badges), and therefore am a rubbish homemaker. On the plus side, I am moderately tidy and clean.

Mumcentreplus · 29/11/2010 22:19

Hey my bickies were all sold coz they taste lovely.. 40p each I might add made with love and butter Grin

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/11/2010 22:19

Oh, I am tidy and clean.

No fucker is at home all day to make a mess.

The other bonus of working FT is that for 40 hours a week at LEAST nobody is cluttering your house with crap.

Until you give your teenager a key, then all bets are off.

scottishmummy · 29/11/2010 22:20

best thing about work is i never do after school play dates or have to eat home-made mammie cakes..why would i when i can go deli for wee cupcake at £3 a pop

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/11/2010 22:22

And, frankly, you just buy cakes to donate to the school bake sales instead of making them yourself.

Nobody comes and takes you away to Guantanamo.

sausagelover · 29/11/2010 22:22

I don't think that smug is necessarily the right word, however I do feel glad that I am financially independent, as I don't like the idea of relying solely on my DH for money.

But unlike you, I am working PT and have a pre schooler.

Ragwort · 29/11/2010 22:22

Where is the OP ? Perhaps she is polishing her CV (if it's not perfect already Envy - ! ). Surely she woulnd't be doing anything as trivial as watching TV or painting her nails.

becaroodolf · 29/11/2010 22:24

I am a full time mum.

I also do voluntary work.

I am also doing a PT degree with the OU.

I spend most of my time watching "Vampire dairies" and eating malteesers.

Obviously.

scottishmummy · 29/11/2010 22:25

what the fuck is a full time mum,is that slang for no workey

JamieLeeCurtis · 29/11/2010 22:25

GetOrf - indeed - Mr Kiplings French Fancies always go down well

SweetAlice · 29/11/2010 22:25

I am a stay at home mum of school age children and I recently discovered "il bel far niente" (if you found some time to read "Eat, Pray, Love" snuggled up on the sofa next to a bar of extra dark chocolate and a glass of good red wine you'll know what that means). All I can say is: I can't get enough of it.
But hey, if keeping busy gives you satisfaction and a sense of purpose in life ...well done you! Keep going!

becaroodolf · 29/11/2010 22:26

Absolutely!!!!

Never done a hard days work in my life!!

sigh.

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/11/2010 22:27
