A well-meaning relative has given DD1 three of the ugliest dresses I've ever seen. I'm sure if I'd scoured the whole country I couldn't have found a more horrendous set. All are fuschia pink barbie branded frou-frou numbers with naff Barbie catch-phrases on the front. Naturally DD (2.11) loves them. I can't stand the sight of them.

If I hide them away, how long will it take her to forget about them?

Never let them see the light of day. She will forget about them soon enough.

Ha! I can swap you the heinous creations my FIL has given my dd. They're Italian, but my goodness they have a big style bypass. A purple velour Betty Boo tracksuit with rhinestones spelling out the word Betty on the bum? For a 6 month old? Bleurgh!

Oh Let her wear them! If she wears them in the house, she will love you forever and chances are they arent appropriate for going out in anyway so insisting she change them for a warm outfit isnt unreasonable if you leave the house. Think of them as her "dressing up" clothes.

At that age she will barely be in them a few months anyway.

stick one of them in the dressing up box. throw the rest!

mummytoatribe -yes, definitely sticking to the indoor thing. Re growing out of them: thing is, said relative has bought one in age 2-3, one in age 3-4, and one in age 4-5. She'll be wearing them for bloody years.

One of the slogans says "BFs before boys". I appreciate the sentiment but boys?! She's 2.

My dd [2.5] has been given a 'princess' dressing up set complete with pink furry tiara, polyester skirt, earrings and plastic high heels. Which dd adores. I have hidden it for the moment as cannot bear hearing her clip clop around the house in the heels, falling over every two seconds. Think it might accidentally fall into the bin get lost.

headfairy missed your earlier post. Seriously your DD's betty boo tracksuit sounds pretty tasteful by comparison

I had some hideous lovely tops bought for DS by my sister who has appalling lovely taste and thinks she is really trendy. One was black with a huge red car on it and the other was red with a huge black motorbike on it. DS never wore them and I left the tags on and have just sold them on ebay. There were actually quite a few people watching and bidding. I was very surprised!

We need pictures to make a proper ruling on this.
That said, I'd probably let her wear them.
For long walks in muddy fields, to climb trees, to chase dogs around the park thru the leaves and muck... all proper stuff to be doing whilst wearing a fluffy pink frock :).

DD1 was given a black velour Barbie dress when she was a baby, complete with gold trimmings, glittery silver stitching, pink decorative atrocities ...and a matching scrunchie! I didn't even take it off the hanger.

Alice I've got some delightful smock dresses in a sort of pattern I can only describe as pub carpet, complete with fake white polo neck insert underneath. I felt bad for about a minute when I shoved them in the back of the wardrobe, but then my FIL is an arse who can hardly be bothered to see his only grandchildren so his hideous monstrosities will probably end up on ebay - and if they don't sell, they can be dusters!

StrawberrySam - the thank you photo has already been dealt with DD donned all three monstrosities together within minutes of ripping the paper open and fortunately I had the camera at the ready.

Ragged - now you come to mention it, they would make rather good muddy field attire

I used to be like you.

I agree - let her wear them as dressing up clothes! (ie not out of the house!! ).

I used to compromise in such circumstances. Hideous dresses got worn - but I find that such things rarely fit in with the colour of the washing load that I am doing, and therefore it takes an awful long time before they work their way out of the washing basket And then of course, small girls grow very fast . . .

However, to be fair the monstrosities I used to deal with were all hand-me-downs so there was no guilt tripping involved!

where can you wear a pink frou-frou dress in this weather other than at home? By the time it is warm enough to wear them anywhere else, they will no longer fit.

Oh, please bin them! And comfort yourself that they're probably made out of something horribly flammable.

Do let her wear them, what's the worst that can happen? That somebody might think you have less than exquisite taste?
