to buy 3 items of shopping when I buy petrol?

because the man behind me in the queue thought I was!

I had just dropped dd at school, petrol light came on and I had 25mins before ds was due into pre-school. So I thought I'd pop to the local petrol station which has a Tesco metro attached (ie petrol is something else but you go into the Tesco to pay) Brilliant I thought I can pick up some porridge as we ran out this morning.

So I fill up, pop in and literally walk down 2 isles, pick up porrdge and weetabix and then think i'll treat myself to a pan eu chocolat for brekkie. It took about a minute.

Then I queue to pay, which probably takes about 2 mins.

Not unreasonable I thought until I walk out onto the forecourt and the in the car behinds starts shouting at meShock

Apparently he was now late getting his dd to school and it was my fault. 'park over there and get your f&ing shopping'Shock

For a start there was a MASSIVE Tesco lorry blocking the shopping spaces. Perhaps he couldn't see it Hmm

He then carried on as I got into my car, 'you've wasted 2 mintues of my life'

ROFL!!!

I was so embarrassed but I hadn't done anything, yet EVERYONE was staring at me

So was I BU by buying 3 things taking about a minute or am I right in thinking this > probably should rise out of his pit earlier to get his dd to school and perhaps not shout people down in petrol stations!!

UANBU

GypsyMoth · 22/11/2010 09:41

I would have sat for ages in my car fiddling with seatbelt etc, whilst smiling in my mirror at him!

Then waved as I drive off....... Nobody treats me like that and gets away with it

curlymama · 22/11/2010 09:47

Maybe he was angry because he hadn't had his weetabix this morning.

He was being a rude, ignorant twat. You did nothing wrong.

samcrow · 22/11/2010 09:48

I've been both you and the man behind and I can see both sides. In my local Tesco with a shop attached there are signs which tell you to move your car if you're shopping as well and there are bays in front of the shop.

If these were blocked then you don't have any choice but to stay at the pump - I would have had a good old rant back at the man in your situation. But if I'd been him I would probably have been cross too.

I don't need to drive to school but why does anyone stop for petrol if they're on such a tight schedule?

NotFromConcentrate · 22/11/2010 09:49

YANBU. He's an ignorant twat and I'd have given my nicest smile, and stuck two smartly manicured fingers up at him Wink

I do get really pissed off a bit miffed, though, when people park in at the petrol pumps and go in for shopping but no fuel. Or who fill up and then spend 15 mins perusing the shelves. IABU, but it does my pips in!

ShatnersBassoon · 22/11/2010 09:51

YANBU. What a horrible angry person.

Geepers · 22/11/2010 09:51

I'd be cross with you to. It drives me cry when people dilly dally getting shopping when there are people queuing behind them for petrol. You should have moved or got shopping later.

mumblechum · 22/11/2010 09:54

I would have been annoyed at you. Why not move your car as soon as you've filled up if you're going to the supermarket.

Sorry but I think you were extremely inconsiderate.

mumblechum · 22/11/2010 09:55

I also get annoyed at Pay at Pump pumps where people don't use their card, but go into the shop to pay.

FFS if you don't want to pay at the pump, go to one of the normal pumps.

Tiredmumno1 · 22/11/2010 09:57

Geepers it does not sound like the op did her shopping, she just grabbed a couple of bits.

op yanbu its not your fault he was late

Eddas · 22/11/2010 09:58

if you read my op I couldn't move the car as a huge Tesco lorry was blocking the shopping bays.

I do get annoyed with people who go in a spend ages pondering round but I took litterally one minute so I stand by my decision to buy the 3 items.

In the petrol station I use the queues always take ages, I know this now so make allowances

NotFromConcentrate · 22/11/2010 09:59

mumblechum lots of petrol stations have signs everywhere asking you not to move your car until you have paid for your fuel. In that case, I think the guy behind me could whistle if he thought I was going in to pay for my fuel, coming out to move my car,and then going back in for 3 items of shopping.

I think grabbing three things (two of which must have been side-by-side on the shelf) is different to wandering round for a week's worth of shopping or just a having nosey to see what they have

Tiredmumno1 · 22/11/2010 10:00

And mumble did you not read, the op could not move her car, due to the big tesco lorry parked over the shopping spaces

omnishambles · 22/11/2010 10:00

Lots of people need to use vouchers or suchlike though and so sont want to pay at the pumps - especially at tesco when you've got 5p off a litre...

givemesomecandy · 22/11/2010 10:01

The whole point of having a petrol station that sells groceries is that it is a convienience to buy them when you go in to pay for your petrol!!

I think you are certainly not BU and definately not inconsiderate!

If the man is late for dropping his child off/ work or whatever else then he should have given himself extra time to stop at the garage or got his fuel the night before.

People who blame others for their lack of organising their time really annoy me!

I would also have sat in my car fiddling around with seat belt, radio, hair and then drove off when I was ready not some rude person sitting behind me!

LittleMissHissyFit · 22/11/2010 10:05

So if you had picked up a paper, a chocolate bar and a packet of fags, that'd have been ok with him wouldn't it? What is the difference with 3 other items.

YANBU

Don't feel bad about him, he clearly has ISHOOS. People looked at you with sympathy not anger.

If you ever see him again and if he does say anything again, turn on your heels, go back into the shop and report him to the manager for abuse, harassment. get them to record his number plate and get a member of staff to go out with you to your car and tell him if he ever does anything like that again, that the police will be called.

Baileysismyfriend · 22/11/2010 10:09

YANBU, what a twat.

ivykaty44 · 22/11/2010 10:14

My local BP garage emloy two people and at busy times they have one person on the till and one person on the shop floor restocking and so the que of cars is out into the road and the que to pay for petrol is about 12 deep.

You can shop int he BP gargage and get all M&S produce

I rarely get petrol ther as the que is to long but soemtiem I get food and have a chat to the man on till duty.

It is all set up in these type of places to take forever to get petrol as people food shop at the same time - there are signs stating you must not move your car once you have finsihed putting petrol in, as they can't make the petrol pump work anyway until you have paid which when people are queing to pay for petrol mixed up with food shoppers - means you will have to wait

It would be better if these places where built in the first place with more petrol pumps and the facility to pay for the petrol at the pump and then move forward to do shopping - but there not made with any type of common sense - they want you inside the shop for impulse purchase

gorionine · 22/11/2010 10:14

You left your car near the pump and went to do some shopping( as little a shopping as it was)? If so sorry but YABU, as it does not only blocks the car behind yoy but prevents anyone else from using the pump.

I appologise in advance if I misunderstiood and it is not actually what you did (if you moved your car first and then did your shopping).

It is one of my pet hates(and I do not drive!Grin) as well when you go shopping and eventually find a parking space with people about to live and as soon as they spot you waiting for the space they stasrt slowing down jusy "because they can"

senua · 22/11/2010 10:19

It is really annoying when you have to wait ages for other cars to pull away from the pumps, especially when you can see that they are in a daydream and totally oblivious to the inconvenience they are causing others. The fault is in the design of these petrol stations / supermarkets, which are neither one thing nor the other.

YABU for paying Tesco Metro prices though. I hardly ever buy anything on principle, because they are overpriced.

ivykaty44 · 22/11/2010 10:21

gorionine - reading the op's first post she mentions that the lorry was blocking the way to parking elsewhere and that was why she couldn't move her car first and do her three item shopping

Eddas · 22/11/2010 10:21

gorionine, no I did buy petrol too.

I also couldn't move the car as there was a lorry blocking the shopping bays and as other people have said he couldn't use the pump until I had paid anyway!

I do agree with those saying you shouldn't do a weekly shop in these types of places but do you really all get annoye when people buy a couple of things? Really? As lots of people have said if you go to one of these stations do you not expect people to buy a couple of bits with their petrol?

(by 'one of these stations' I mean with a Tesco or M&S or whatever attached, not a BP/Shell)

OP posts:
Eddas · 22/11/2010 10:23

Senua, I do agree, but if he had been watching me, which he clearly had he would've seen me walk very quickly down one isle, up another and then wait in the queue for most of the time I was in there!!

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 22/11/2010 10:23

eddas - I don't think anyone can see this tanker

ivykaty44 · 22/11/2010 10:25

or the queue
