to buy 3 items of shopping when I buy petrol?

because the man behind me in the queue thought I was!

I had just dropped dd at school, petrol light came on and I had 25mins before ds was due into pre-school. So I thought I'd pop to the local petrol station which has a Tesco metro attached (ie petrol is something else but you go into the Tesco to pay) Brilliant I thought I can pick up some porridge as we ran out this morning.

So I fill up, pop in and literally walk down 2 isles, pick up porrdge and weetabix and then think i'll treat myself to a pan eu chocolat for brekkie. It took about a minute.

Then I queue to pay, which probably takes about 2 mins.

Not unreasonable I thought until I walk out onto the forecourt and the in the car behinds starts shouting at meShock

Apparently he was now late getting his dd to school and it was my fault. 'park over there and get your f&ing shopping'Shock

For a start there was a MASSIVE Tesco lorry blocking the shopping spaces. Perhaps he couldn't see it Hmm

He then carried on as I got into my car, 'you've wasted 2 mintues of my life'

ROFL!!!

I was so embarrassed but I hadn't done anything, yet EVERYONE was staring at me

So was I BU by buying 3 things taking about a minute or am I right in thinking this > probably should rise out of his pit earlier to get his dd to school and perhaps not shout people down in petrol stations!!

lol IK!! That was exactly the size of the lorry!!

gorionine · 22/11/2010 10:30

Missed the lorry bitBlush. If there was no way out for you regardless of you shopping or not it is a non issue really as you could not have been any faster anywaySmile

Casserole · 22/11/2010 11:06

I don't quite get this. The man behind couldn't use the pump until after the OP had paid for her petrol and thus 'cleared' the ump for the next person to use.

So was she supposed to go in, pay for her petrol, go back out, move her car to a parking space and go back in to the petrol station kiosk to buy her 3 grocery items at exactly the same till?

gorionine · 22/11/2010 11:11

Dh always moves the car in a way nobody gets blocked before he goes and pays for his petrol it is not that hard but in OP's case it was not an option as way was blocked by a lorry anyway.

Casserole · 22/11/2010 11:15

But they can't use the pump until after you've paid anyway!

gorionine · 22/11/2010 11:20

Yes but if the person behind you pays before you and you are blocking the way it actually rend 2 pumps useless even if one is usable because payed already.Smile

Eddas · 22/11/2010 11:28

it was a station with only one pump per lane so I was only blocking one pumpSmile

OP posts:
gorionine · 22/11/2010 11:29

sorry Eddas, that was to Casserole, as a general remark, not based on your OPBlush

Eddas · 22/11/2010 11:33

i'm just trying to prove how reasonable I was beingGrin

OP posts:
Casserole · 22/11/2010 11:41

I see what you mean Gorionine - yes, if you were blocking another already free/empty pump that would be polite - though often the petrol stations are designed so badly there's nowhere else you can move to. Sorry, I thought you meant like in the situation the OP described.

Tis a minefield Grin

ClaireDeLoon · 22/11/2010 11:46

YANBU. I think the fact that he said you'd wasted 'two minutes' proves how unreasonable he was being. You clearly just picked up a few things. He sounds like a very angry man.

ChaoticChristmasAngelCrackers · 22/11/2010 12:16

YANBU

Frazzledmumwithsmudgedmascara · 22/11/2010 12:30

YANBU, OP. There are always people in life that think they are more important than others. WTF is he on about "wasting 2 minutes of his life"? He sounds a pompous twat.

I would have done as others suggested and taken ages to put my seatbelt on, adjust my seat, adjust the mirror, check my hair etc etc, before driving off giving him a smile and wave.

thefurryone · 22/11/2010 13:17

YANBU but then he's also NBU reasonable to be a bit annoyed, although he is BU to shout at you like that. He's clearly not a morning person.

StealthPomBear · 22/11/2010 13:20

well if you stood there for half an hour wondering "shreddies or weetabix?....shreddies or weetabix?..." then ywbu, but otherwise no!
2 minutes of his life - what a drama queen!

samcrow · 22/11/2010 13:29

Several posters have said that you can't ude a pump until the person before you has paid - I'm pretty sure that isn't right or why would there be signs asking you to move your car if you are using the shop.

I don't think they expect you to go in, pay for petrol, move your car, go back in and buy shopping do they?

Anyone work in a Tesco station like this ?

risingstar · 22/11/2010 14:01

if the guy was desperately tight for time, he was a tit for getting petrol from this petrol station.

there is one near here- it does my head in. i never get petrol if i am in a hurry-only if i need some shopping and am going in my lunch hour- it has a marks and spencers food, a cafe- but does not sell petrol cans as i found out when my colleague ran out Grin

op YADNBU

thisisyesterday · 22/11/2010 14:04

samcrow... no, the person behind you can't use the same pump or it would go onto your bill!!!

the pump doesn't know the car in front of it has changed

i imagine they ask you to move your car to enable other people to get in/out, not so that they can use the pump.

once you have paid i believe they have to press a button so that the pump will be "reset" for the next person

StealthPomBear · 22/11/2010 14:08

you can do the whole pulling up / removing petrol cap / getting out cashcard thing though

discobeaver · 22/11/2010 16:05

He was being a git.

If he started yelling at you before you got in your car you should have pretended to forget something and gone back in the shop.

Also he shouldn't have sworn in front of his children, or bullied someone in public. What a prick he sounds, you did nothing wrong.

samcrow · 22/11/2010 16:21

Thanks thisisyesterday - I don't use the particular petrol station very often so wasn't sure. I wonder why they bother asking you to move if the person behind can't start using the petrol anyway, it will only make one car's length difference to the queue so hardly seems worth it.

Also, if I was the second person I'd get annoyed standing waiting for the petrol to start while the previous person sauntered round the shop not realising they were holding up the queue.

samcrow · 22/11/2010 16:46

Just done a bit of googling out of curiousity about this (funnily enough this thread is the first thing that comes up) but this is a discussion on a bike forum, I haven't linked as its not exactly the same, but the bikers say that fuel pumps can do what they call "multiple fills" and the thread is about being charged for someone else's petrol so it looks like it is possible to speed up the queue.

Rockbird · 22/11/2010 16:53

Yes and no. You weren't BU to get 3 items of shopping at all.

Buuut, I hate it when people go round petrol stations with a fecking trolley doing their week's shopping Angry

mumbar · 22/11/2010 16:53

YANBU, my local petrol station had a co-op/ is a co-op store too. It is often you have to wait whilst person in front grabs groceries and p[ays for petrol - so I don't go when I'm in a rush Smile. It does annoy me when its more than 10 minutes tho.

AnneTwacky · 22/11/2010 17:15

YANBU. He was being an idiot.

His being disorganised is not your fault.

And even if he was annoyed there is no excuse for that outburst.
