to believe that most people who regularly use the Talk section of Mumsnet know, or have met, at least some of the others in RL

I don't know anyone on MN in RL.

I get the impression that many people who regularly post in talk either know one or two (sometimes many more) posters in RL, or have at least met them at MN events/get-togethers.

I think it's lovely but for some stupid reason it makes me feel a bit Envy. This is utterly ridiculous as I have lovely friends in RL.

Am I right though? I'm curious - do most people 'know' other MNers?

apart from my sisters, i have met a handful of mnetters. but not for many years. though have been spotted at willows farm and saisnburys lol.

Memoo · 20/11/2010 22:40

oh good Grin I just remember ages ago seeing a pick on one of your profiles of when you were little girls.

SlightlyJaded · 20/11/2010 22:42

Hmm so it is quite split actually then - between those, like me, who know nobody (as far as we are aware) and those who know a few.

I feel that I am less 'in the minority' than I had previously assumed. It really did seem to me that most people seemed to know each each other quite well, but I suppose the anonymity of Mumsnet allows you to be far more honest than you would in real life, enabling you to develop quite intimate friendships - albeit 'online'.

I think some of my Envy isn't actual envy but just a feeling that there are so many witty, compassionate, clever and laugh out loud funny people on here that I would like to have them as friends.

On the other hand, when you do Mumsnet meets then (rather than arranged individually meets), do you all 'reveal yourselves' - so to speak? How strange that must be - like when someone adapts one of your favourite books into a film and it takes you at least half an hour to process the face and characteristics of one of your favourite characters :)

memoo its on my profile. quite far down though these days

SuePurblybiltByElves · 20/11/2010 22:42

Showads, do. Only thing is you'll have to listen to my stories about Donovan and my StepF singing shanties. Devon is just about saturated with folk singers, I thought Ireland was bad till I moved to Appledore Grin. (don't live there now stalker types Grin). Finger in ear, go to happy place.....

Showaddywaddy · 20/11/2010 22:46

Well, my posting name is Show Of Hands ('cept when masquerading as a colourful pop band gone by), them being my favourite band. I'm very happy to be saturated with west country folk singers.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 20/11/2010 22:48

I know this (am namechanger. was formerly Tipp y choocks) Grin
My Mum loves Soh. Sorryn Grin

SuePurblybiltByElves · 20/11/2010 22:48

Jakers, this keyboard. Sorry

SoMuchToBits · 20/11/2010 22:49

I expect you're right SlightlyJaded. Actually I would really like to have a MN Playmobilers meet-up. We could all take our favourite Playmobil sets and bore each other senseless! But it's unlikely to happen, as we mostly live in completely different areas, sometimes even different countries!

Showaddywaddy · 20/11/2010 22:49

Aah the cat lady. Grin

SOH are astonishingly good. Your Mum is v brilliant.

Memoo · 20/11/2010 22:49

Ah its a lovely picture misdee, love your little outfits

SuePurblybiltByElves · 20/11/2010 22:51

Mad cat lady. Supporting a chinese sweatshop near you. DD has bought you another btw, will post Grin. Sorry again.

Mum likes SoH and goes to see them. Many, many folky types here, you'd like it.

Showaddywaddy · 20/11/2010 22:58

Noooooo, no more. DD carries the feckers everywhere. They have names. They have stories and personalities and evil little bloody eyes. Actually don't post, I genuinely move tomorrow!

We're going to Devon next June on holiday. DH thinks we're going to do normal holiday stuff and NOT sit in folk clubs underground with bearded men and patchouli-scented women. Fool.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 20/11/2010 23:04

No, come to me and I will take you to the finger in ear ones. DD has seriously bought one, will I lose it? Grin

BitOfFun · 20/11/2010 23:07

I found a rabbit under our car this week

I used all my black ink in making marvellous posters to track the owners down, but nada. I dropped it off to the animal rescue today and had a little cry.

BecauseImWorthIt · 20/11/2010 23:08

I've been here for just over 4 years now. In that time I've been to a few local meet ups, so have met some MNetters, and have been to the London Christmas party for the last two years. I was also invited to the MN 10 year birthday party, so met a few more MNetters.

But I also talk regularly here and on Twitter and Facebook with MNetters I've never met. And somehow, even though I've never met them, it feels like I 'know' them.

If you speak to people regularly over a period of time it's inevitable that you get to know them, even if you haven't met them.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 20/11/2010 23:10

Thanks for sharing Bof.Poor bun.
I almost bought a degu. It was speaking to me.

SlightlyJaded · 20/11/2010 23:13

Oh BitofFun that is :(

But are the posters still up? There might still be a happy reunion yet...

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 20/11/2010 23:21

The rescue people said that nobody ever claims them, especially if they are timid, because they prefer them friendly...and the vets I called earlier in the week said they reckoned it was Clear Out For Christmas Sad.

SlightlyJaded · 20/11/2010 23:26

oh that's grim. What a horrible thought that you would get rid of an animal because it won't 'perform' the way you want it to.

Well done you for trying. At least it will be fed and cuddled now. Probably better off than with the kind of people who would turn it out anyway

I used to foster dogs in Ireland and many, many old ones were abandoned (as in signed over) at the pound because the owners didn't want to pay kennel fees in the summer hols or didn't want an old dog at Christmas. People, for the most part, are shit.
