to believe that most people who regularly use the Talk section of Mumsnet know, or have met, at least some of the others in RL

I don't know anyone on MN in RL.

I get the impression that many people who regularly post in talk either know one or two (sometimes many more) posters in RL, or have at least met them at MN events/get-togethers.

I think it's lovely but for some stupid reason it makes me feel a bit Envy. This is utterly ridiculous as I have lovely friends in RL.

Am I right though? I'm curious - do most people 'know' other MNers?

I've never had a birthday party before. This year it's my 30th. Two of my favouritest MNers are coming to stay and we're having a party!

I've met quite a few MNers, most of them because we had babies at the same time and we got to know each other through that.

Some of my most favourite people in the world I met on MN.

bellavita · 20/11/2010 20:33

Who is coming to stay Show?

scottishmummy · 20/11/2010 20:47

depends how you use mn.i dont know anyone.words on a screen and thats how i like it.

but i suppose given it popularity i must unwittingly know a mn but just not their rl name, only their mn nom de plume

someone in rl asked me did i ever go on mn.i kept ma ma poker face and said Mumswhat

ItalianLady · 20/11/2010 20:48

I don't know anyone in real life but in my paranoid moments I do wonder if people in real life know this is me Hmm.

southeastastra · 20/11/2010 20:48

i have one mn friend i talk to regularly

ComingDownTheChimmley · 20/11/2010 20:49

chipmonkey · 20/11/2010 20:51

SM, she was on to you!Wink

ADreamOfGood · 20/11/2010 20:52

You missed your chance there sm- "Netmums? Oh it's great..."

scottishmummy · 20/11/2010 20:54

you know what its like.quip pops into mind 5mins too late

see but the thing is because i blanked it and looked nonplussed she didnt discuss further, other than to say she posts on mn a lot.but didnt say her moniker

Memoo · 20/11/2010 20:54

I know Plonker from rl but we met through work years ago before dc. She is even lovelier in the flesh that she is on line.

There are a few people on MN who I have never met but who have been real friends to me. One in particular who gave me support through a really difficult time and who I have so much respect for that I regard her as a real friend even though we have never met.

MrsColumbo · 20/11/2010 20:56

ItalianLady the same thought goes through my mind at times Smile. I like the fact that you can have a good chat and a laugh - Slightly Jaded, what are you of all people worrying about, given the laughs you've given us lately, with your Pom Bear shennanigans! - but no-one knows or cares that you might well be sitting in your jamas looking a right mess.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 20/11/2010 20:56

I have only met one person and she doesn't post any more - I don't think.
But I feel like a few posters are my buddies

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 20/11/2010 20:56

I've met quite a few MNers in RL.

Some just at meet-ups (going to the Scottish Christmas Meet-up in 2 weeks time), some through other threads and one has become a good friend.

I think I've introduced one or two people (RL) to it as well

scottishmummy · 20/11/2010 20:57

i never notice the names tbh.dont pay heed tot the name just the jist of the post

Nagoo · 20/11/2010 20:58

I don't want to meet in RL. I like being anonymous! I just chat to whoever's there!

I don't know any MNers in RL that I am aware of.

I have always been made to feel welcome when I have joined a thread.

spilttheteaagain · 20/11/2010 21:12

But SlightyJaded everyone knows who you are! It's people like me who no one has ever heard of that ought to worry about being left out.

I know no one in RL, which means I can imagine what you are all like/called. I find it weird enough seeing people's profile pics - they never look like I imagine based on their talk names.

Kaloki · 20/11/2010 21:16

I don't know anyone in RL, tbh as I have no kids yet I kind of feel like I shouldn't go to any meets. However illogical that is!

Kaloki · 20/11/2010 21:17

Plus, most meets are understandably for mum's to get away from DP's and kids - and I'm fairly reliant on DH as I'm disabled. So wouldn't want to make things awkward by bringing him.

Heifer · 20/11/2010 21:30

I've met a few in RL. I made friends with them in the Bar threads that used to be around (5 yrs or so ago). Around 5 or 6 regular chatters at the time. We just gelled.

We chatted on MSN and then when I moved up North, arranged to met a few of them. They were very friendly Grin.

I have another 5 or so "friends" I chat to on FB but will probably never meet up in RL.

I do think it's much harder to make friends on MN now, due to the number of people posting.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 20/11/2010 21:34

i don't know any MNetters in RL, tho i have a vague suspicion about one of my friends from a couple of comments she has made....

but i like the anonymity. i would probably deny, deny, deny if anyone asked me too!! i like the chat just as it is ....

spikeycow · 20/11/2010 21:36

I haven't met anyone, would like to meet a few. There are 3 in particular I agree with on every thread!

scottishmummy · 20/11/2010 21:36

wouldn't a larger number of people make it easier for folk to click on mn?see i think is better now, less cliquey.less we done that already, search the archives

NoahAndTheWhale · 20/11/2010 21:41

I've met a couple a few years ago and then went to a meet up in York about 6 weeks ago so have met some more.

I also know my SIL who also posts here :)
