to believe that most people who regularly use the Talk section of Mumsnet know, or have met, at least some of the others in RL

I don't know anyone on MN in RL.

I get the impression that many people who regularly post in talk either know one or two (sometimes many more) posters in RL, or have at least met them at MN events/get-togethers.

I think it's lovely but for some stupid reason it makes me feel a bit Envy. This is utterly ridiculous as I have lovely friends in RL.

Am I right though? I'm curious - do most people 'know' other MNers?

I have met lots of my fellow Belgian MNetters in real life. We have a meet up planned for Xmas and a few of us are off to the cinema on Tuesday. And I had a MN Ash crisis refugee to stay once!

I am not at all anonymous on here. Anyone that knew me in RL would spot me easily. I have a few other MNetters as FB friends.

bellavita · 20/11/2010 20:18

I have never met any MNers except my SIL and cousin who rarely post. Mainly beacause I am in Ireland but also I am a bit self-conscious and therefore nervous about meeting up!

But I have been here for almost 6 years now and feel like I am familiar with lots of posters and that I know as much detail about some as I would about some RL friends. I am also friends with some MNErs on FB so have gotten to know what they look like etc without having met them.

I do sometimes feel a little Envy of some who have met up in the way I used to feel about the "popular" girls in school, even though I wouldn't have swapped my friendship with my two best friends for a friendship with them, IYKWIM.

nameymcnamechange · 20/11/2010 20:22

I have met two (but I knew them in rl anyway, the Mumsnet connection became apparent later) but they don't post here any more. I have never been on a meetup or anything like that, although have been here for 4+ years.

And this question is in AIBU because ... ?

lollipopshoes · 20/11/2010 20:22

bella - I missed your coffee post Blush, but just now read it Grin

Yes, I know who you mean

bellavita · 20/11/2010 20:23

Agree with the fb thing chipmonkey, I have lots of mner's on mine.

southeastastra - where is Rhubarb these days? Does she still post?

Thank you to those who have kindly waved to me - feeling very popular now Smile.

notnowbernard · 20/11/2010 20:25

I 've never knowingly met another MNer and don't know of anyone in RL who uses MN

SlightlyJaded · 20/11/2010 20:25

namechange it's in AIBU because I had made an assumption that most people knew at least one or two MN in RL, and I didn't know if this was a reasonable assumption to make. Or an unreasonable one, hence AIBU

Our local group meets up quite regularly but apart from our local thread we don't seek each other out on the boards and definitely don't act in a clique-ish way if we do come across each other on the boards.

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 20/11/2010 20:26

Awful it was indeed!! She was VERY cross with me! :(

KenDoddsDadsDog · 20/11/2010 20:27

PrematureEjoculation · 20/11/2010 20:28

some MNers have met each other IRL, some twitter, facebook and MSN each other in addition to MN, som ehave been on here for donkeys and therefore 'know' quite a bit about each other, some are relatively new but very pally anyway...
