To want my housemate to shut the door when going the toilet?

New lodger moved in last week but I'm a bit disturbed by the fact that he keeps using the toilet with the door open. It's a small house so I can hear everything, including his lack of hand washing afterwards Shock.

I find it really creepy, especially when I'm home alone with him. He's normal in all other respects. AIBU to find this odd?

ewwww minger. Tell him immediately. Vile!

flibbertigibbert · 19/11/2010 21:46

Obviously that should be 'going to the toilet'

Thankfully he stays in his room most of the time so isn't contaminating the whole house with his unwashed hand germs.

How on earth do you bring something like that up?

beebuzzer · 19/11/2010 21:57

Yes, I couldnt live with that. Not sure how you wouldbring it up though. Is he an older or youger guy?

cees · 19/11/2010 21:58

Yuckety yuck. The dirty fecker.
When I was house sharing, my housemate came outta the bathroom one morning and we passed in the hall, we said the usual good morning, good night last night etc... all with his willy hanging out lookin at me Blush

I was more embarrassed then he was.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 19/11/2010 21:59

Grim. Tell him at once.

LadyViper · 19/11/2010 22:00

tell him straight that you know he doesn't wash his hands and that its gross!

netbook · 19/11/2010 22:02

ew, time to introduce some house rules!

LittleNicci · 19/11/2010 22:02

Can you put a "Now Wash Your Hands" sign above the toilet, like they used to have in schools?

flibbertigibbert · 19/11/2010 22:03

beebuzzer - he's a few years older than DP and myself.

Maybe getting DP to mention it would be the way to go. It's making me feel very creeped out. How can he not be bothered by the thought of someone else seeing or hearing him? Confused

Does he leave the door open for a poo too?

I'd get your hubby to have a word, it's really not on.

flibbertigibbert · 19/11/2010 22:09

cees - so far only wees. Though he did let rip an extremely loud fart the other day (shudder)

beebuzzer · 19/11/2010 22:11

yes I would get your DP to mention it. It does sound pretty creepy and especially when he has just moved in.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 19/11/2010 22:12

Are we talking door wide open or just a little bit ajar?

Personally I'd make a bit deal of shutting the door on him whilst he was in there, and telling him that I don't want to see that, thank you!

cees · 19/11/2010 22:13

Oh he sounds like a gent, not. I second that shudder.

RevoltingPeasant · 19/11/2010 22:17

Ew. I used to lodge in someone else's house and I would NEVER EVER have left the door open. In fact it used to really bug me that they didn't have a lock on their door.

Although, on the handwashing: I don't think you can bring it up. He is a grown man and his personal hygiene is his business. Also, are you sure you are right on that score? My landlady when I lodged thought for a while that I was using her washcloth in the bath because I used to hang it up when I was in there (she left it in the bath so had to put it somewhere). She eventually confronted me and I was quite insulted and said, er no, that would be disgusting...

peeringintothevoid · 19/11/2010 22:18

YANBU! Yuck! I don't know how you handle that, but I reckon it'll be better coming from your DP than you.

flibbertigibbert · 19/11/2010 22:19

Maisie - the door is ajar not all the way open.

RP - definitely no hand washing - the taps make a noise.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 19/11/2010 22:24

Definitely just pull the door closed when he's in there. He'll soon get the message Grin

RiojaLover75 · 19/11/2010 22:26

No, sorry that's unacceptable! He shouldn't leave the door open while in there.

flibbert so you have DC??

EricNorthmansMistress · 19/11/2010 22:29

If he's not washing his hands then touching doorknobs/stuff in the kitchen then he could be spreading norovirus or any other shit around. Yuk.

RiojaLover75 · 19/11/2010 22:33

And if there are DC in the house it definitely needs addressing rather than a 'slam the door' and hope he gets the message job.....

LittleNicci · 19/11/2010 22:33

He must wash his hands when he has a poo, surely? If not I'd be following him round with the Dettol spray, decontaminating everything he touches.

flibbertigibbert · 19/11/2010 22:37

No DC in the house. Still making me feel uncomfortable though.

OP posts:
RiojaLover75 · 19/11/2010 22:40

How are you with confrontation flibbert?

It does need addressing though, if he doesn't wash after peeing then goodness knows what happens after other bodily functions, ew!!!
