To think a lot of American films (especially Disney) are quite racist?

(Okay, not sure if 'English' is a race, or whether it would come under 'caucasian'. I know that people get accused of racism against 'Irish' so I am assuming 'English' can also be a race - or would that be ethnic origin?!) Anyway, so many of the villans in American films are English, I notice this especially watching Disney films with the kids, if all the villans had for example Indian accents or even Irish accents wouldn't more of a fuss be made? Just curious!

Jon Stewart is fantastic - sexy as hell too.
Many a dirty thought about him.

fedupofnamechanging · 19/11/2010 15:00

thanks

BornAgainBokononist · 19/11/2010 15:08

Just want to say I agree about the British and the rest of the allies being written out of WW1 and WW2 films, think Saving Private Ryan is a shocking example of this.
Though I see the discussion has moved on to John Stewart sexiest man alive

theevildead2 · 19/11/2010 15:17

I thought Saving Private Ryan was a good film... And i think we should have seen a more of Matt Damon with out his shirt off. That's what the film was about wasn't it?

cakewench · 19/11/2010 15:28

Every country teaches history from their perspective. You notice it with Americans because our films are all exported here etc, but you don't notice it about say, the Dutch.

The English are often portrayed as villians in films, however as someone else pointed out, they are also portrayed as being ridiculously cool rock star types. The fact is, Americans like the English and we like the accent(s). You'll notice if there is an English baddie, he's often very smooth, debonair, and intelligent. He's the James Bond of villains. I promise all of America doesn't honestly believe you to be a bunch of Chianti-drinking, fava bean scoffing cannibals. Grin

In all honesty, the decision to make the bad guy English is often a case of "who is the least likely to be offended." If a film needs a foreign baddie, it's just easier to have an English actor, or German, or someone else from a Western European country.

I love Jon Stewart and I always forget to watch him here in the UK...

fedupofnamechanging · 19/11/2010 15:28

On an unrelated note, what are American sweets like?
My brothers girlfriend is American and I was going to get her a hamper of American sweets and chocolate bars for Christmas (think she is homesick). Only want to get them if they are nice though. I tried a Hershey bar once and thought it was nice, but don't know if it was imported or made from British chocolate. Bought Kit Kats etc in Germany and they were awful, so not the same chocolate as us at all.

I am very fussy about chocolate Grin

BonniePrinceBilly · 19/11/2010 15:31

Its not an americans are stupid thread. The posters who rock up complaining about american bashing when anyone says anything than "gee isn't the US fab?" are probably a bit dim though.

Nancy66 · 19/11/2010 15:32

American chocolate is horrible - very very sweet.

I think our sweets are much better.

LaWeaselMys · 19/11/2010 15:40

Interesting about marriage stats. I couldn't find an equivilent UK stat, but apparently in 2001 only 2% of marriages were mixed race here, which I was surprised by.

I think American TV shows do much better than their films in showing mixed couples and it not being a thing.

The UK can be a bit odd about it too. There seemed to be more mixed couples shown in shows aimed at younger people ( I can think of lots of Channel 4 ones - but are there mixed race couples on 'stenders?! I don't know...)

If they don't show them because they think it will put so me people off then they are mad IMO!

theevildead2 · 19/11/2010 15:43

American chocolate is fairly dire, the stuff you get by the till anyway. We do have some good stuff. I'm a snob though and too keen on the stuff you get here either. Speaking og Galaxy is American, we renamed it for you guys :)

Find out what she likes and what she is missing bound to be a massive list.

Sweeping generalisations about a whole country are a just a teeny weeny bit obnoxious Bonny. ANd don't say "Rock up"

Can everyone please just stop saying Rock up..
Does my head in

theevildead2 · 19/11/2010 15:44

not to keen that should say!!!

redflag · 19/11/2010 15:46

Its a compliment, they normally have English accents because it makes them seem intelligent.

No English is not a race.

cakewench · 19/11/2010 15:46

also, my German husband says he commiserates with the 'my nationality is always the Hollywood bad guy' theme. Wink

I don't actually see much in the way of bashing in this thread. Please don't take this as an invitation to let loose, though. :)

Hershey's chocolate is horrible, full stop. Cadbury's isn't great either, imo, but it's better. The best supermarket checkout chocolate (ie, that price level, not expensive stuff like Lindt) is Ritter Sport. Perhaps Milka. Also anything by Ferraro. UK chocolate has the lowest levels of cocoa in it out of all the European brands. Hershey's is even lower. blargh.

However, Reese's anything always wins. mm peanut butter.

theevildead2 · 19/11/2010 15:48

oh yeah reeces does make up for it..also butterfinger Blush

fedupofnamechanging · 19/11/2010 15:55

Thanks. Will re think Christmas present as I think this would be easy to get wrong.

theevildead2 · 19/11/2010 15:58

Ask your db he'll be constantly subjected to whining about somethign or another (assuming she's newish here) moutain dew or somethign. There are some good websites for American foods since I 've got pregnant its all about cheetoes and thats an expensive habit!

LetThereBeRock · 19/11/2010 16:18

Hershey bars taste like vomit.

LetThereBeRock · 19/11/2010 16:18

I do love the peanut butter cups though.

cakewench · 19/11/2010 16:28

Hershey bars do taste of vomit. :( I'll never forget the first time a British person said that to me. Hershey's Kisses have never been the same since.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 19/11/2010 17:08

I like the peanut butter cups. I think it's because they don't have too much chocolate in them.

I remember going to NY on honeymoon and being very excited about visting the Hersheys shop. Only to get my chocolate back to the hotal and discover I was eating brown vomit. Angry

MrsChemist · 19/11/2010 18:11

Americansoda.com is ace for American sweeties. Mmmmm..... Jolly ranchers and mountain dew and froot loops (not together)

fedupofnamechanging · 19/11/2010 18:19

Will take a look at that site. Am always open to trying new sweets Smile
