My daughter who is now 7 has been hounding me to get her a bra!!! A few of her friends have them but I'm putting my foot down and saying no not until you have boobs!! I was horrified to be faced by a bra and knicker set being sold in tesco for 5-6 year olds!! As a result my daughter also spotted it and continued to hound me around the shop about buying the said set! Thank you tesco!

What is wrong with a good old fashioned vest to keep you warm when you are 7? Bras are for when you start to get boobs!! Why are girls being encouraged to grow up so quickly? I find it a bit sad and am given a hard time by my 7 year old who wants to join in!

Natjan - do you mean the pink glittery type cro vest? If so, I can't get het up about that. If it was longer it would just be a normal vest. IMO that is def not a bra shape.

The bra is another thing altogether.

Cannot believe!! What is going through people's heads - parents and retailers alike!! Good to see most parents are on the same wavelength and want to allow children to be innocent children for as long as possible!

The bra is part of a range and all the other colours are 28a and so on.... I think it may be a mistake.

princessparty · 19/11/2010 16:56

you numpties - it's size 4/5 not age 4 to 5

Hulababy · 19/11/2010 16:59

Hmm..it's alright saying that Y6 or Y7 is old enough for crop vests (not talking of the bra here) but some little girls start to develop before that, and not all of these are obese or even vaguely fat. My slim 8y (Y4) is starting to develop. She has never yet worn a vest in her life, but wanted to cover up a bit as was feeling a bit conscious of the fact. A crop vest is a good compromise for her as it oesn't make her warm, and isn't a bra, as she isn't ready for a bra - and a little white crop vest doesn't show through her white school blouse so much. I wouldn't buy a brightly coloured one personally, but then wouldn't buy a brightly cooured full vest either.

The bra is nonsense. Bras should not come in ages at all. A bra should be in a bra size - 28AA, etc. Ages should never be necessary for a bra.

Hulababy · 19/11/2010 17:01

prncessparty - since when did we have a size 5 or 7 in adult sizes here in the UK? I have never seen these sizes in a UK shop before and AFAIK Tesco don't stock these sizes as adult sizes in their other clothes. The only time I have ever senn 4/5 or 7/8 written on clothing in the UK they have referred to child sizes.

redflag · 19/11/2010 17:08

Might grab a pink set for ds! saves him keep putting mine on?! Confused he is 4 by the way ha ha ha

HalfTermHero · 19/11/2010 17:18

Just awful. What 4, 5 or 6yr old has need for a bra? Even if a little girl was very obese and had rolls of fat in that general area I still don't think a bra would be appropriate or necessary. Tesco should burn the fucking things!

princessparty · 19/11/2010 17:21

'prncessparty - since when did we have a size 5 or 7 in adult sizes here in the UK?'

4/5 and 6/7 will be aged 12ish to teen sizes. Can you not tell just by looking its not going to fit a 4 YO???

begonyabampot · 19/11/2010 17:21

just sent an email to them regarding this - see what they reply.

TheFeministParent · 19/11/2010 17:32

I phoned customer services and they agreed it looked like the bra was age 4/5, other bras in range satrt at 28a.

HalfTermHero · 19/11/2010 17:36

I hope that you raised merry hell, FP Smile

TheFeministParent · 19/11/2010 17:58

The customer service assistant said it 'was very concerning' and that 'she would raise it with her manager asap'.

HalfTermHero · 19/11/2010 18:09

Good. Will they be calling you back to confirm /deny/ agree to the bras being burnt?

Hulababy · 21/11/2010 19:37

I have had an email that says that it is indeed an error and they should be in the adult section and that they do not sell any form of bra for children. They apologise for any upset caused.

thumbwitch · 22/11/2010 04:20

Thanks for update, Hulababy. I have just had a look at my own link again but the padded bra still seems to be there - not sure if it's just cos I have the page cached, tried re-searching for it but it still came up, same sizes as before - can someone else try it to see?

CardyMow · 22/11/2010 11:16

A padded bra??? Jeepers, DD is almost 13yo, and in a 34b, and I'd not be buying her a bloody padded bra. She has a functional plain white bra that doesn't show through her school shirts too badly! Red diamante? FFS. They are CHILDREN not porn models. DD never had a 'cropped vest', but by the end of Y5 (age 9yo), she did need a t-shirt bra in a 32a. But OMG, bras for 4-5yo's?
