Bra and knicker sets for 5 year olds!!!

My daughter who is now 7 has been hounding me to get her a bra!!! A few of her friends have them but I'm putting my foot down and saying no not until you have boobs!! I was horrified to be faced by a bra and knicker set being sold in tesco for 5-6 year olds!! As a result my daughter also spotted it and continued to hound me around the shop about buying the said set! Thank you tesco!

What is wrong with a good old fashioned vest to keep you warm when you are 7? Bras are for when you start to get boobs!! Why are girls being encouraged to grow up so quickly? I find it a bit sad and am given a hard time by my 7 year old who wants to join in!

Thumbwitch 4/5? That's just bizarre! I knew a woman who bought her 9-year-old daughter a thong. Gross or what?

I wore crop tops in junior primary, then a bra in year 6 but it was out of necessity as I was an early developer! But it was not wired, very functional, like a cross your heart type.

mountainmonkey · 18/11/2010 15:06

Surely the sizing on the website has just been mislabelled Confused. Its described as "supportive" what kind of 5 YO needs support?!!
And its a push up one -there'd be nowt to push up! If its not an error then someone has a very warped idea of how to dress a child.

thumbwitch · 18/11/2010 15:09

mountainmonkey - I would tend to agree with you except that the bra I linked to is listed as "girls'", rather than "womens'". So no, I don't think it has been mislabelled - unless there is a whole new labelling system that I and everyone else here is completely unaware of.

MmeLindt · 18/11/2010 15:32

I thought it must be a mistake too. Surely they are not really selling padded bras for 4/5 yo?

Lastyearsmodel · 18/11/2010 15:43

According to the Let Girls be Girls campaign page Tesco have signed up to it. Perhaps they've forgotten... Hmm

thumbwitch · 18/11/2010 15:45

Just to check, I went back and tried again here is what I found when I searched for girls underwear aged 4-5. The knicker and crop top set are there now, as well as the padded bra that I previously linked to. If you want to be even more horrified, note that the sizes of the crop top combo are 4-5, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. This suggests that the 5-6 size of the padded bra has run out of stock, as they only list the sizes available!!
But I could be reading too much into it....

Housemum · 18/11/2010 16:06

I'm sure that one's a mistake - they seem to have the same one for £4 with proper teen bra sizes (AA & A cups) if you check the girls' underwear section.

I'm not sure I can really get hung up on crop tops, some girls don't like full length vests, and if they are styled like short vests that's ok (ie no hint of triangle bra shapes, just a sleeveless t-shirt shape

It's the outerwear I find worse sometimes, the teen fashions - it can look cute, I know, but can't they just be kids???

brightongirldownunder · 18/11/2010 16:13

Oh Jesus I've just seen this. This can't be allowed to happen...
How does this get reported to the Let Girls Be Girls campaign?

FishWidow · 18/11/2010 16:14

My DD was desperate for a bra from the age of about 7. We compromised with a crop top which she called a 'bra vest' and kept her quiet for a few years.

I was astounded to find bikinis with push up padded underwired tops in New Look a few years ago offered from the age 9. I wrote to their Head Office complaining and did get a response from them but I dont think they took them off the shelves. I think its even worse to have padded bikini tops because they're on show to the world.

Maybe if we started a campaign against this kind of early sexualisation of our daughters by writing to Tesco they might review their lines?

MmeLindt · 18/11/2010 16:29

I tweeted Tesco clothes - @ClothingatTesco Is this really a padded bra for a 4 - 5 yo? Surely not? bit.ly/c8FzjR

I do think that it is a mistake. Wrong sizing on the website.

Hulababy · 18/11/2010 17:02

thumbwitch - I can only see a crop top on the tesco one, not a padded bra. The crop top is a cropped vest, def not bra shaped imo.

Just had this message:
@mmelindor Thanks for alerting us, it was a technical error, and has now been removed.

tb · 18/11/2010 18:57

My dd is just 13 and has been wearing a bra for nearly 2 years. All her friends like the lightly padded bras. She does too, and says it stops the boys staring at their nipples - especially when it's cold.

Get's -10 here in winter, so maybe she's got a point.

Natjan · 18/11/2010 18:57

The crop vest I saw was def bra shaped! Not for me and my 7 year old!

Natjan · 18/11/2010 18:59

I can understand it when girls get to yr 6 or are starting secondary school but 7 - no!

PinkieMinx · 18/11/2010 20:52

Why would anyone allow a 4/5 year old to wear a diamante covered red bra top!! Sad

pastyeater · 18/11/2010 21:01

Exactly. Who on earth are buying these?
Disgusted by them more than the retailers.

PinkieMinx · 18/11/2010 21:05

Retailers are wrong but let's face it - it is supply and demand. If there weren't feckless idiots buying them, they sure as hell wouldn't make them.

thumbwitch · 18/11/2010 22:12

Is it though, Pinkie? I mean, to create a demand, someone has to design and manufacture the things in the first place - then of course it becomes about the demand of the customers and competition (if Primark are selling them, then Tesco don't want to miss out on the market)

But still some sicko thought this would be a good way to expand the market in the first place...

*random examples of retailers, you understand!Wink

SIL has hunted down a gel bra for her DD for chrismas as that's what she really wants and it'll make her feel better about herself... neice is 13 FFS! Angry

At 13 I was still struggling with the concept of having to wear a bloody bra (major tomboy) never mind an enhancing one!!

Disgusting they are aiming these at children even younger :(

Thankfully I have a DS althouh he was told by a neighbour the other day he looked 'sexy' in his monkey hat, he's 4.

WTF is it with people now that they think it's fine to sexualise kids like this and somehow it has became 'normal' and 'innocent'

JebusBuiltMyHotQuads · 19/11/2010 14:45

The bra is back on the website Hmm

Size 4/5 FFS Angry

Hulababy · 19/11/2010 14:50

Has the bra/pant set gone then? There is a crop vest and pant set but it is def not a bra shape, just the same shape as the top of a vest.

The bra is vile.
