my ds started school in sept and for all the time i have been a member of mn every christmas i enjoy reading the threads about the strange costumes you have been asked to provide usually at 3 days notice! Anyway today ds comes out of school with a letter to say that he is a shepherd in his nativity and not only that i have 2 and half weeks before it needs handing in, i was looking forward to having to make a penguin suit or something else really random and have no time to do it in so aibu to be slightly gutted that ds school has taken away my ability to moan on here this year and not be able to join in with all of you! Go on make my day tell me what your dc are this christmas

YABU to think that a navity play should have a penguin in it

Can you not write a letter to his teacher saying that you don't feel the part of shepherd is sufficiently high-profile for DS and therefore you will be sending him into the play as a penguin?

ONE YEAR... i was thrilled that my son had got the part of joseph, i didn't know anything about the play, but was concerned that he only had to learn songs.

when i turned up...chest puffing out...the play was cleverly re-written from the POV of the sheep.

joseph had shit all to say or do.

Ar nursery, DD was The Star of Bethlehem, so wore a sparkly gold robe + gold star on head (whcih she loved), but she went around telling everyone "I'm THE STAR of the show"

Just wait until he's camel hump 4! Our school had "alice the camel" with 12 humps one year, so 12 kids were just "a hump"!

trust me i am not a pushy parent and am very happy that he is a shepherd i am just gutted that the play does not seem to include any of the weird and wonderful costumes i have heard about on here! I definitely remember a penguin last year and i think someones daughter had to go as a snow rabbit

Shepherd is a great part (only requires dressing gown and tea towel)

DD has been a dancing donkey, and also a 'person who talked about myrrh' (line "you can buy it on the internet for £5")

also why a snow rabbit in Israel?

I'm sure you could "penguin up" a shepherd costume - use your imagination.....get some authentic shepherd decoration on the dressing gown or something

DD is a little star. I need to attach tinsel to a black long sleeved top and leggings. Am not sure how to achieve this.

DS is Narrator 5. He needs "party clothes". As his normal party attire is a messy tshirt and messy trousers I have bought him a "nice" shirt

This year he is at catholic school and they are a little more conventional, so he is a sheep

A couple of years ago my DS's school did a traditional nativity story,

DS was given the part of "snowman". [hmmm]

Ah, but on the good side you will LOVE seeing him with the traditional tea-towel on his head. You will weep buckets. You will feel a truly embarrassing mix of pride (in him) and shame (at yourself for sitting there snivelling).

I am a convinced atheist but I love a tea-towel shepherd. I can feel a little tear seeping out already

I was baby jesus in my brother's nativity play. Which meant he got to be joseph.

I houseshared with a primary school teacher after I graduated, many years ago.

She came home in despair (and giggling) after the nativity play - apparently the inn keeper decided to ad lib.

Upon being asked if there was any room in the inn he bellowed "of course, we've got loads of spare rooms, come on in!"

DD is in juniors, they don't do the nativity in juniors at her school. No more nativities for me :(

DD has been a sheep - all her class were - and an angel - again, all class were. She was Mary one year too and had to sing solo - very proud!

DS was Joseph and was put in this long brown caftan thing ( he was 4 ) and was very happy to have easy access to his manly bits throughout the Nativity!

Regardless of religious beliefs (or lack of them) one can't help but have a little sniff at the Christmas Concert/nativity/play.

My DD2 has SN and goes to a mainstream school with an integrated Language Unit. Last year KS1 finished the nativity with the whole 3 year groups signing Silent Night to a musical accompaniment.

I blubbed the whole way through to see non-verbal DD signing away.
