my ds started school in sept and for all the time i have been a member of mn every christmas i enjoy reading the threads about the strange costumes you have been asked to provide usually at 3 days notice! Anyway today ds comes out of school with a letter to say that he is a shepherd in his nativity and not only that i have 2 and half weeks before it needs handing in, i was looking forward to having to make a penguin suit or something else really random and have no time to do it in so aibu to be slightly gutted that ds school has taken away my ability to moan on here this year and not be able to join in with all of you! Go on make my day tell me what your dc are this christmas

Is there some kind of heirarchy involved in the assigning of parts in the christmas play?

I have always wondered which is the most prestigious part for a boy..

Joseph? Shepherd? King? Gabriel? Inn keeper? Narrator?

sethstarkaddersmum · 19/11/2010 14:27

I think Joseph is the most prestigious boys' part based on who got the part in dd's reception nativity last year. DD was Mary but actually there were only 3 girls in the class so it wasn't such a big deal.
It left her with a lifelong enmity for the boy who played Joseph because she didn't like the way he walked.

They are doing Peter Pan this year and DD really wants to be Wendy; I have gently explained to her she probably won't as it's a mixed age group class and she's not only young but small and Wendy is a big sister.
What I am secretly thinking is 'If they don't cast her as Tinkerbell I will SCREAM and STAMP MY FOOT!'

My little one is too small for nativity's yet but I had some great ones when I was at school. I've been a ragdoll, an owl (my mum and sister still haven't got over having to sew hundreds of tissue paper feathers onto a brown top) and a line-dancing shepherd. More traditionally I was also an angel and the star, the star was my favourite part as I got to wear my bridesmaids dress and walk from the back of the hall to the front, through the audience. I had a tinsel lined shiny metal star on top of a giant pole and the wise men followed behind me.

One thing I do remember was an unfortunately incident involving a sheep one year. I had a ride-on sheep that had wheels and we offered it as a prop one year (I can still remember wheeling the darned thing all the way to school and back.) Anyway someone at the back was supposed to push it out so it would roll to centre stage. Whoever it was pushed it so hard it shot across the stage, off the front and into the front rows of the audience.

Sidge that's a classic! I am also cracking up at the thought of an angry sheep.

Reminiscing; I once played the wind in a play called 'Travellers in the Mist' when I was in (what's now) year 3 and I really fancied one of the year 6 'travellers' so i only floated around him...

I was The Angel Gabriel in the nativity. Unfortunately I was very shy and couldn't say the name Joseph for love nor money, but apparently all you needed was long blonde hair, so there I stood in front of everyone terrified having to sing the finale. I asked to be in the props dept. from then on!

DS1 - Angel, Joseph.
DS2 - Shepherd , King.

I still cry at the nativity can't help myself.

melodyangel · 19/11/2010 17:33

Oh, when DS1 was Joseph, both he and the girl playing Mary had long blonde hair with a black baby Jesus. The audience were a little Confused
DP and I were in stitches!

In dd's first nativity (age 2) we were unaware of what she was going to be.
She was one of three children brought out wearing cute white fluffy jackets with tails and a hood.
Dh then audibly exclaimed, 'oh look, she's one of the three kings!!'

I despair!!

neverenoughMEtime · 19/11/2010 20:33

Well in DD's first nativity, she had to take in party clothes and it turned out she was supposed to do a random short dance with a group of boys (and i had dressed her in black pants and a black glittery top with hair tied back-she looked like one of the boys!!!) All the other little girls were angels and the last little girl was mary :( I was actually really upset that my girl was the only girl who didn't have a christmassy outfit :(

This year im very happy because she is going to be an angel!! And not only that, but a speaking angel :) She has 2 lines to say Grin

Sorry you are dissapointed OP :( Hope you and DC enjoy it anyway!

YANBU.

Your DC, and every other DC, is talented, special, and deserving of the star part in the show.
