my ds started school in sept and for all the time i have been a member of mn every christmas i enjoy reading the threads about the strange costumes you have been asked to provide usually at 3 days notice! Anyway today ds comes out of school with a letter to say that he is a shepherd in his nativity and not only that i have 2 and half weeks before it needs handing in, i was looking forward to having to make a penguin suit or something else really random and have no time to do it in so aibu to be slightly gutted that ds school has taken away my ability to moan on here this year and not be able to join in with all of you! Go on make my day tell me what your dc are this christmas

needafootmassage - love the list. Brilliant.

So far ds has been a shepherd and an elf ( lots of them in Israel too) but this year has yet to be announced and his name is that of one of the key male characters. He is holding out for that main part. He may be disappointed.

If he isn't think will write in and complain.Have already got my towel on the front pew in the local church Grin

I am permanently scarred by being told by a classroom assistant that I had been down to be one of the angels but I was so naughty I'd been demoted to a villager.

I don't know if it was true even but what a horrid thing to say to a 4 year old. < gets furious again, 30+ years on >

I don't bear grudges though Wink

Sidge · 16/11/2010 20:09

LOL LeninGrad Grin

He sounds fab - they should create an improv sort of role for him.

DD is a Narrator this year - at least I should be able to see her this time!

DS will probably be "small boy on naughty step for whacking other small boy with something heavy" - Blush - but he's only 2.

And I was the Angel Gabriel at school - I can still remember my lines and everything. I bet my parents were unbearable Grin

BeattieBow · 16/11/2010 20:20

mumsnut my dd is a chicken too. (one of those well known hanging around in the stable chickens).

she chose it herself. I did ask her why she couldn't be a cat or something easier to make.

PanicMode · 16/11/2010 20:50

DD came home and said that she was an alien in the school play. I queried how many aliens she thought there were in Bethlehem, and she said two per class. Apparently it's true, there are to be 6 aliens in the school nativity. She, however, has now been 'downgraded' to a shepherd. I'm actually quite pleased because the costume will be easier Grin, and being a traditionalist, I'm very unconvinced about the outer space element to the show!

YANBU. I remember feeling last year (reception) that we had far too much notice about World Book Day costumes and I was looking forward to being landed in it just like all the proper MNers.

PiratePrincess · 16/11/2010 21:31

DS2 is a roman soldier in the play "Jesus' Christmas Party"...

He thinks it's really funny so I am looking forward to it Grin

whoknowswhatthefutureholds · 16/11/2010 21:34

ds1 was Joseph last year, it can only get more interesting therein.

MangoTango · 16/11/2010 21:37

My dd1 was the innkeepers wife at nursery. In Recep she was a star, then in Y1 she was a dancer. (Non speaking part.) I've not heard anything about this year, so a penguin maybe?
dd2 was a sheep last year at nursery and is a donkey this year (her final year.) We have told her that the donkey is the most important part!

ceebeegeebies · 16/11/2010 21:39

Just reading this - I am going to get notice of what character DS1 is aren't I?? The school/teachers haven't mentioned it (other than give us the date) and if they are relying on DS1 to let me know what part he is playing, they will be sadly disappointed as when I asked him the other day I got told 'Ben 10' Grin

Just worried now in case I should be making a penguin costume or something??

droves · 16/11/2010 21:41

ds2 is gabriel this year
(he thinks this means hes the best looking boy in class )
ds4 is a shepard ...hes not pleased , he wanted to be an animal so he could make noises Grin.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 16/11/2010 21:42

I dont think ds's school is even doing a play Sad

wideratthehips · 16/11/2010 21:45

ds1 who is now in yr2 is the first of my three to be at school. in foundation he was a star...he too thought he was the star of the nativity. yr1 angel gabriel looking after the little angels (from foundation class.....ahhh very cute) this year hes a narrator reading from the POV of the cat who knows something exciting is about to happen in the stable Grin

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 16/11/2010 21:48

DD3 came home one year and announced "I'm a dopey shepherd".
I said in my best jollying along voice: "Oh come on now, a shepherd is a great thing to be".
She gave me a withering look and said "No, I'm supposed to be dopey. I count the sheep all wrong."

PinkIceQueen · 16/11/2010 21:55

This thread is hilarious! PanicMode - we are doing the alien one at our school this year, it is going to be hilarious, take your video camera (if that's allowed).

My children have been:

King number 3 (aka wise man)
Shepherd (many times)
Chorus
Percussion

Sadly no penguins. Although working in a school i have made cockerels cows and
Mice, amongst other things, and yet to be made this year... many many aliens!! (And a spaceship!!!)

justonemorethen · 16/11/2010 22:18

Think yourself lucky. My son's school does alternate years for junior and infant school plays. Missed out in Y,R was a shepherd last year in Y1. Will miss this year as junior production again.
Will miss out next year as it will be infants production. I'm livid to be honest.

Apparently it's a space issue (small hall). Head will not entertain the idea of using the village hall down the road as to many Health and Safety issues walking them down the narrow village lane.

AIBU to move schools over a Christmas play?

sarahfreck · 16/11/2010 22:27

"his name is that of one of the key male characters."
Herod? Wink

chubbymummy · 16/11/2010 22:28

We also did "Christmas with the Aliens" last year and it caused lots of controversy. The Grandparents were not impressed and 2 of our cleaners were so upset I thought they might quit their jobs!!! DS's school are doing it this year and I'm sure it will upset most of out village, lol.

After last years uproar we're keeping it more traditional this year and so I'm currently up to my eyeballs in shepherds, sheep, angels and star costumes (we only ask parents to provide the basics, eg pumps to wear and WHITE underwear for the angels). While Mumsnetting I'm scouring my itunes for suitably heart-wrenching music to accompany the tiny nursery angels in their delivery of Baby Jesus. Before that I spent the best part of an hour prancing round the lounge making up a star dance and last night I had a dream that one of the angels fell off the stage. - Perhaps I should start thinking about next years nativity in January!

bandgeek · 16/11/2010 22:37

My DC so far have been

A snow-flake
Inn-keepers 2 & 3

Last year's was a tradional nativity at their nursery and DD (then 3) got offered the part of Mary but she didn't want to do it as she wanted to be the same as her brother. I was gutted Grin

This year DS has started primary school and the whole class are elves. The only costume I had to provide was a pair of red tights [disappointed] DD's nursery are not doing a play this year [even more disappointed].
