my ds started school in sept and for all the time i have been a member of mn every christmas i enjoy reading the threads about the strange costumes you have been asked to provide usually at 3 days notice! Anyway today ds comes out of school with a letter to say that he is a shepherd in his nativity and not only that i have 2 and half weeks before it needs handing in, i was looking forward to having to make a penguin suit or something else really random and have no time to do it in so aibu to be slightly gutted that ds school has taken away my ability to moan on here this year and not be able to join in with all of you! Go on make my day tell me what your dc are this christmas

I will see your penguin and raise you a hooker dancing girl, Dd came out of school many moons ago to say she was a hooker in the school play [oliver] we spent many a calm hour explaining she was a dancer, alas nooooo her mates were jealous because she was one of the hookers Confused

DD1, age 4, was a sheep last year (school kindly provided that outfit!) but this year is a mouse ..... I'm 38 wks pregnant and am sturrgling trying to think at all of how to do a VERY simple costume for her .... all ideas gratefully accepted (offers of readymade costumes even more so Wink !!!!)

Why couldn't she have been a sheep or donkey, they're selling those in asda for £6 !!!!!

What about this? [http://www.ehow.com/how_5169813_make-mouse-costume.html] or this [http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/mouse-costume-662332/] or [http://www.diylife.com/2007/10/12/halloween-costume-is-there-a-mouse-in-your-house/] or some inexpensive options on ebay

How about cardboard ears sewn/stuck on alice band or beanie hat, T shirt and legging/trackie bottoms in brown or grey. Tail made from long sock safety-pinned to leggings and a pink nose and brown or black whiskers painted with face-paints. You could add grey or brown gloves or mittens if you have them but not essential imo.

TeaRocks · 17/11/2010 08:22

YABU. I was desperate for DS to be a shepherd and I have been fobbed off with 'a fluffy chick'. I feel cheated.

DD was a dancing chinese person a couple of years ago. The one before that she was a monkey. The main monkey apparently. She has also been on of Alice's humps.

coolascucumber · 17/11/2010 09:02

At our school the 'professional' parents start lobbying for their little darlings to have a good role quite early in the term. My kids have never had one of the main parts. There may be good reason for this - the 5 minutes of video we have of DS1 as a shepherd keeping watch and having a good old rummage in his nose.

The 'professional parents' arrive early for every performance to secure a front row seat even though they've seen it twice before. Professional doesn't mean they are working it just means their whole lives are obsessed with making sure their kids are selected/in gifted and talented/etc.

Every year it is the same kids chosen. So this year there was a performance in the summer put on by Y6 and I had a bit of a moan to the teacher who I also know socially. DD ended up with one of the best parts - aagh the shame, I had become a 'professional' parent. (Although DD was obviously brilliant and should never have been overlooked for so long!!)

2anddone When I get 48 hours notice to knock up an implausible costume I'll pass it on to you and then you can start an 'AIBU to feel mildly irritated that my friend (whom i have never met) has given me only 48 hours to knock up an implausible nativity costume?

I am sat at my desk WETTING myself at walnut and raisin Grin

DD's preschool doesn't do one so I can't wait for next year!!!

GooseyLoosey · 17/11/2010 09:26

dd is MARY this year - how I rejoiced, only to find like Custardo before me that it is all done from the animals perspective and Mary is a bit part. Sheep 5 and camel 4 have more lines.

callow · 17/11/2010 09:33

In my children's school there was one nativity play for the whole of Keystage 1. Only the children in Year 2 got the interesting parts. The children in Reception and Year 1 all dressed as either shepherds or angels, sat at the side and provided the singing.

One year dd was Mary and it was totally nerve wracking for me as she was a total fidget and didn't concentrate on what she was doing. She had already been warned that the part would be taken away from her. I think she was chosen as she had to sing a duet and she had a nice voice.

shocknews · 17/11/2010 22:31

sarahfreck thanks very much for those wonderful links ! I'd never seen that 'ehow' site before, but am sure I'll be using it again !!!

Not feeling quite as worried now. She has a grey hooded jumper and obviously grey tights from school, so feel relaxed that the only other bits really are the ears and a tail !

Thanks again xx

Curlybrunette · 17/11/2010 22:45

Last year my nephew was a sailor in the nativity. There were 3 little boys stood together, dn,a cowboy and a indian, and at some random point during the play they started doing the YMCA.It was quite hilarious, but very random.

This year my ds (4) is a sheep. He's quite upset, he says only the angels get to do anything. Not sure why though cos I wouldn't have thought he'd like to have all the attention on him.

We only have to provide white top and trousers though so easy for me

Want2bSupermum · 17/11/2010 22:49

25 years ago I was a tree in the nativity play. It was very unfair of the teacher to do this to me as everyone else had a proper role.

I did make sure I was an amazing tree. I had my mother paint her laundry basket green and then I insisted on it being lined with moss with huge branches sticking out of it. My mother said she was so upset when I told her I didn't want anyone to see my face.

The following year we were at a different school and extra girls were Angles in training. The head had a policy that the children had a different role every year.

katsh · 17/11/2010 23:01

Is your ds happy with being a shepherd? When my dd2 was at nursery, I was told by her teacher that they'd asked her to be an angel but as she wanted to be a teacup.. that was fine by them. I told her she could be an angel like everyone else Grin.

mamatomany · 17/11/2010 23:07

When my 3rd DD was about to be cast as a crook or a bloody bale of hay I went into to see the reception teacher with my photographic evidence that certain families children just seemed to get the best parts every year.
Twas hilarious in hindsight, the teacher denying it and me whipping out my photo album and her reluctantly agreeing.
My DD was the Angel Gabriel that year in a £200 dress I happened to have lying around the house, that is true actually she was a bridesmaid that year Blush

Shodan · 17/11/2010 23:24

As far as I can remember ds1 was one of eight Three Wise Men (no speaking), 'crowd', a blackbird (or it may have been a sheep, possibly) and 'chorus'. All my evenings at Christmas performances were spent half out of my seat, craning my neck to catch a glimpse of him, only to wish I hadn't when I saw him prodding/poking/shoving his neighbour and being shushed by the teacher.

I was always bloody Joseph (all girls' school) because I was taller than practically everyone else, except for the girl who had to play the innkeeper. I yearned to be Mary, or even the Angel Gabriel, but no. Sodding Joseph.

PlonkerForLifeNotJustChristmas · 17/11/2010 23:32

Dd2 is a cat this year (halloween costume is going to come in handy then ...)

Dd1 is a nasty fairy

Last year dd2 was a Christmas pudding and dd1 was Mary (and yes, like others, she said sweet FA!)

elphabadefiesgravity · 17/11/2010 23:33

Dd has been a narrator (Whoops a Daisy)
Angel (can't remember the play but it was fairly traditional)

Fairy Godmother (Panto Pandemonium) - The best school Xmas production I have EVER seen and they were only Yr 2)

Last year she was the Mum in No Time for Xmas the one with Tick & Tock and 50 million parts for every child.

This year Xmas concert :(

chubbymummy · 17/11/2010 23:35

Superman, I was also a tree in a school play! Had to wear a brown pillow case and hold a twig infront of my face.

ok, so how about DD's role as a dancing fish in 'the Ice Factor'? I've spent hours with silvery material and one of those silver car sun visor things and she now has a long dress, tail and fins. Phew.

DS is a fisherman. Those sweet nativity days are long gone, so much for a tea towel on his head, anyone know where I can get a cheap yellow souwester instead?
