How many baths per week is acceptable as a minimum? If no other washes.

ginodacampoismydh · 10/11/2010 00:21

not read thread but only 2 to 3 and a shower after swimming

pinkjello · 10/11/2010 00:22

Never been swimming is more shocking than not bathing IMO (unless, of course, a child have some form of additional needs)

It could save his life one day!

NormalityBites · 10/11/2010 00:26

Thank you BadPoet. I didn't think I deserved to be called disgusting either.

She showers twice a week usually (when she doesn't it's because she is v.tired after swimming and making her have one when she actually dislikes the process would result in Meltdown - which I like to avoid if I want to get out of the changing rooms in under an hour!) Bath is more of an activity than a washing event, she likes to idle in it for ages playing.

Desiderata · 10/11/2010 00:33

Yes, Jello. Quite right.

But I'll guess he'll pick it up before he's old enough to be unsupervised near water?

It is, after all, a natural human instinct, and not something that needs to be rushed unless you've got diddly squat to do on a Saturday morning?

He's fucking brilliant at crochet ...

Pan · 10/11/2010 00:50

Morning Desi! long time....Grin

Desiderata · 10/11/2010 00:55

Yay!

I trust you're well, Pan?

Pan · 10/11/2010 00:56

Absolutely stunning! But sleep time. Hope you're all gud to?

thumbwitch · 10/11/2010 01:00

DS gets hosed down every day because he is still in nappies, so he's in the bath and hosed after a poo.

Actual bath - he gets a bit of one when his hair is washed because it's the easiest way to rinse it (lying back in the bath water) and that happens when it's needed - in winter maybe one a fortnight, in summer more like once every few days. It always gets rinsed through after swimming but not always shampoo'd.

We don't use soap/bubble bath - DH uses a shower wash thing but neither I nor DS do. Don't need it. We do use shampoo but DS uses the Naked range and I have Aveda.

Our skins are lovely!

OnEdge · 10/11/2010 01:14

3 yo and 16 mo every night, 3 yo DD not too good at wiping yet after loo so needs to have bits washed, 16 mo still in nappies so needs bits washing every day. Newborn is bathed 2-3 times a week.

silverten · 10/11/2010 07:08

Every night- it is part of the iron-clad Bedtime Routine and you can see DD visibly relax when it starts. She has been known to take us by the hands and lead us upstairs to the bath when she is tired of an evening. (She's 10 months, by the way- so we use a mini-bath to save water!)

MegBusset · 10/11/2010 08:34

Cakewench you can get Oilatum on prescription, saves spending a fortune on it :)

anonymousbird · 10/11/2010 08:43

DC 6 and 5. Aim for every night, depends how busy we are, but if we miss one then no major problem. Hair wash every 2 to 3 nights. Depends what they have been doing!

They aren't too small to get sweaty at 6 and 5.

Also, mine love a bath, so as long as there is time, they go in whilst I tidy up/getting washing on.

pumperspumpkin · 10/11/2010 08:55

DC (2.11 and 15 months) share a bath every night and love it. Hair wash once a week or after swimming or if they've got paint/food in it. This thread is a real eye-opener.

umf · 10/11/2010 09:07

3x: Sun, Tue, Thu (or swim and shower on Fri). Otherwise he starts to honk, whatever people say about small children not smelling. Think he gets v sweaty at night.

working9while5 · 10/11/2010 09:11

I agree with Disiderata.

My ds had terrible weight gain issues as a baby so we were told a) not to bath him at all before 12 weeks (we gave in at 8 as I was getting so much shtick from the grandparents) and b) to bath once a week after that until he was crawling.

It helps that he has no hair, admittedly (he is 11 months) but twice a week is it. He was doing twice a week and swimming but has decided he hates swimming after dh dropped him in the water and screams like a banshee any time he goes near the water now. So he is being showered, not bathed, as this is easier.

The HV said that children are seriously overbathed these days. We are hoping to even out at 2-3 times a week but we top and tail him and wash his hands with warm soapy water several times a day.

Squitten · 10/11/2010 09:11

DS (2) has an absolute hatred of hair washing which has turned into a phobia of the bath generally so it's always a horribly stressful thing.

Tend to bathe him twice a week and wash his hair as little as I can get away with but it probably averages once a fortnight.

Am I being thick, what has weight gain issues got to do with washing or not washing??

(Am I being thick BTW? You can be honest!)

working9while5 · 10/11/2010 09:21

Not thick at all! Apparently it's a huge energy burner for tiny babies - both the thrashing about in the water and the change of body temp etc. So we were told not to do it as he was so skinny.

DinahRod · 10/11/2010 09:22

The older dcs nip in the shower every other day, more at dh's urging than mine, if just down to me then twice a week as long as they washed hands and faces; dc3 goes in the bath when poo goes up his back.

ilovesprouts · 10/11/2010 09:25

every day whith ds3

otchayaniye · 10/11/2010 09:25

every day. But no detergent unless required and not hairwashing every night.

pinkmagic1 · 10/11/2010 09:34

I bath or shower mine every other day, they are age 4 and 6. Hair is once a week and I always wash hands and faces morning and night regardless.

Bunnyjo · 10/11/2010 09:55

I bathe DD every night to every other night. DD has eczema and we use oilatum in the bath and doublebase afterwards, as well as hydrocortisone cream on flare-ups. Her eczema is fine with how frequently she is bathed and I wash her hair every other day as every day dries it out somewhat.

I also agree with MegBusset that J&J is the work of the devil, it dries DD's skin out beyond belief - horrid stuff!

NormalityBites · 10/11/2010 12:18

It's not 'once a month interspersed with the odd shower' She washes daily, showers twice a week and has the odd bath. Hmm

She hates having her hair washed and it looks just fine only being wet and dried - beautiful and shiny in fact. So I only wash it when it gets a bit tough to comb through. I fail to see the problem.
