To think I should be able to spend as much or as little as I want at the supermarket?

Location - Aisle 4, Sainsbury's, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
Time - 1230 today.

I did the weekly shop this morning, as usual. As I was placing the food etc onto the conveyor belt, I could overhear the cashier and the customer ahead of me bitching about the latest M&S advert, saying how 'smug' Hmm it was and how it reminded people of how little money they had.

Fast forward to my turn in the spotlight...

The cashier struck up conversation with me and mentioned the conversation she'd been having, about "rampant consumerism" and how "disgusting it was".

Not entirely clear what exactly she meant and suspecting strongly that I disagreed with her if what she meant was what I thought she meant (i.e. "w*nkers" like me, with money, spending it), I just shrugged and said, "I wouldn't knock it too much...if people weren't buying stuff, you'd all be out of a job, surely?".

She gave me a cat's bum smile and said nothing after that, other than to announce the total cost of my purchases (£155.50) in a very disapproving tone Angry.

We have friends for lunch tomorrow (2 adults, 2 children) and yes, I pull out all the stops when entertaining...but (annoyed at myself for feeling I have to chuffing justify my purchases!) I've also bought a week's worth of food for me, fiancee and our baby girl.

AIBU in thinking I should be able to buy any amount's worth of food without disapproval from the supermarket staff?

Don't believe you. Sorry.

WastingAway · 06/11/2010 21:22

As long as you can actually afford it.

If i could afford £155 for a sunday lunch, then to be honest, i wouldn't care what the checkout girl was thinking of me.

SumfingNew · 06/11/2010 21:25

I don't live in Trowbridge - I live in a lovely little village nearby Grin

OTTMummA - it wasn't £155 for a Sunday lunch. It was £155 for a Sunday lunch for 6 plus a week's shop for 3.

only joking, hence the smile, as it does seem quite deprived there,

SumfingNew · 06/11/2010 21:28

mufti - you'd be surprised. All sorts round here! Smile

congratulations on having £155 to spend on a weekly shop. Have my first ever Biscuit

PinkieMinx · 06/11/2010 21:57

I imagine the cat's bum was for the 'you'd be out of a job' comment - makes you sound a bit knobby.

YANBU about spending your own cash - I always get comments about how much I spend - cashiers making chit chat Shock

hairytriangle · 06/11/2010 21:58

YANBU. I hate it when supermarket people comment like that - or on what I've bought.

But that is a heck of a lot of money for a weekly shop!

And the new M&S Advert is horribly smug.

Georgimama · 06/11/2010 22:01

There aren't any lovely villages near Trowbridge.

There's a Waitrose in Melksham now, you should have gone there. £155 on a shop wouldn't have raised an eyebrow.

SumfingNew · 06/11/2010 22:04

Georgimama - there are loads of lovely villages near Trowbridge: Steeple Ashton, Bratton, Edington, Erlestoke etc etc!

"I say girl! How dare you take that bleddy tone with me! One more insolent remark and I'll have you out of a job and slung into the workhouse!"

TattyDevine · 06/11/2010 22:12

Perhaps it depends what you deem lovely? Biscuit Wink

celebmum · 06/11/2010 22:17

whats a cats bum smile? i have 2cats and their bums don't smile at me?? Confused

flyingzebra · 06/11/2010 22:17

Sorry, what was the actual question?

Am a bit sloshed so can't be arsed to weed it out from the text in the OP, so could you please just indicate if it was:

a) is it ok to spend £155 on food and booze groceries; or

b) should the proletariat keep schtum in the future and not touch or comment on what they can't afford.

and I will adjudicate as I see fit.

Many Thanks.

SumfingNew · 06/11/2010 22:19

TattyDevine - I challenge anyone to think these villages anything other than gorgeous!

Steeple Ashton

Bratton

Edington

Erlestoke

Flyingzebra - nowt to do with proles or otherwise...surely anyone should be entitled to buy stuff without comment, let alone judgement from the person serving you??
