To think I should be able to spend as much or as little as I want at the supermarket?

Location - Aisle 4, Sainsbury's, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
Time - 1230 today.

I did the weekly shop this morning, as usual. As I was placing the food etc onto the conveyor belt, I could overhear the cashier and the customer ahead of me bitching about the latest M&S advert, saying how 'smug' Hmm it was and how it reminded people of how little money they had.

Fast forward to my turn in the spotlight...

The cashier struck up conversation with me and mentioned the conversation she'd been having, about "rampant consumerism" and how "disgusting it was".

Not entirely clear what exactly she meant and suspecting strongly that I disagreed with her if what she meant was what I thought she meant (i.e. "w*nkers" like me, with money, spending it), I just shrugged and said, "I wouldn't knock it too much...if people weren't buying stuff, you'd all be out of a job, surely?".

She gave me a cat's bum smile and said nothing after that, other than to announce the total cost of my purchases (£155.50) in a very disapproving tone Angry.

We have friends for lunch tomorrow (2 adults, 2 children) and yes, I pull out all the stops when entertaining...but (annoyed at myself for feeling I have to chuffing justify my purchases!) I've also bought a week's worth of food for me, fiancee and our baby girl.

AIBU in thinking I should be able to buy any amount's worth of food without disapproval from the supermarket staff?

OP you sound my dear

'what she meant was what I thought she meant (i.e. "w*nkers" like me, with money, spending it), I just shrugged and said, "I wouldn't knock it too much...if people weren't buying stuff, you'd all be out of a job, surely?". '

  1. You presumed she meant you, think about it if she was talking about you she would not have struck up the conversation
  1. You then proceeded to put her in her place by.. telling her if people stop buying you'd be out of a job. that was nice Hmm

I wonder how many tesco workers have Phds these days, we could offer tuition in the few moments while people are passing. Maybe set an essay of two. Grin eg How is rampant consumerism damaging society ?

i too have done that job, and hated it, esp at christmas. people get more panicky, more impatient and less polite, and cashiers get the brunt.

TrillianAstra · 07/11/2010 13:05

Get Ocado to deliver next time.

SumfingNew · 07/11/2010 17:16

Seeing as I seem to be getting flak from those that think £155 is loads to spend and those that think it not nearly enough, I reckon I'm happy with my lot!

Lunch all over now - roast chicken plus trimmings, followed by apple and blackberry crumble etc - a success all round Grin

Riven, by the way, I'm a fella.

Just ignore and enjoy your shopping Sumfing, i can go into Tesco for a loaf of bread and come out with £100 worth of shopping a few times a week im not bothered and since i don't know the cashiers im not going to loose any sleep on their opinions of me. Grin

I think of Bratton and Edington more as Westbury! but would gladly live in either.

Anyway, YANBU as the cashier should do some research into her (Wal-Mart owned) employer if she wants to talk about "rampant consumerism" Hmm

Glitterknickaz · 07/11/2010 18:39

Farkinell, have Sainsbos been taken over by WalMart too? That's scary Shock

forevervacuuming · 07/11/2010 18:58

Oh sorry, I misread and thought OP said ASDA! Blush
For the "Wal-Mart" bit just read "some guff about Jamie Oliver" then Grin
