Was IBU for phoning the police?

Walking back from the school run, a woman was driving down the road, with her daughter in the front seat (child about 6 or 7) with no car seat or seatbelt on, and she had to slam on her brakes and the child hit the windscreen and cracked it

She got out of the car, checked the windscreen and got back in and drove off, didnt even put the seat belt around her daughter.

I wrote down her number plate and phoned the police, the call handler/police officer said that it will be logged.

I am so FFS car seats are not that expensive for 6/7 yr olds.

Did you stop to speak, make sure the child was ok, offer to call an ambulance, make any attempt at all to find out what was going on before calling the police.

may not have been the time to do any of that

tbh I don't think it would have occured to me to call the police or note the number, I would have been quite stunned by it and probably not got round to actually doing anything before she had driven off

I phoned from home, i only live 5 doors up from where it happened, so kept repeating the reg until i got through the front door then got a pen.

She got back in the car, as I was walking towards her, then drove off.

I saw her driving past me as I was going to cross the road, and noticed that the little girl was sitting far fowarded in the front and that the seatbelt was not around her. Then i looked down the road to see if anything was coming I saw and heard her brake and seen the little girl go forward and heard a bang and crack and could see the windscreen had cracked.

The woman then got out of her door checked the screen from the drivers door (didnt even go around the car) then got back in the car. I thought she was going to stay there, but she drove off.

I would think about calling social services. I know it sounds extreme, but the not bothering with a seatbelt even after her daughter had cracked the windscreen with her HEAD would really worry me. The child could be injured.

Would the police call social services?

I am worrying that the little girl has been taken to school and the mother will not have informed tham what has happened this morning

You did the right thing. Like tots2ten I am worried the mother has took the girl to school, with what could turn out to be concussion. I hope she at least had the sense to keep her home and monitor her.

Curlymama im ok, was shaking when I got in, but shock has turned into anger now. I just hope that the little girl is ok

To think what could have happened is just awful, and the thought that she probably has other peoples children in her car sometimes!

I would have done the same thing. If people can't even be bothered to look after their children they shouldn't be allowed to have them. makes me so mad!

MyGod! You would think the child would have been badly hurt if they hit the window screen that hard. Surely they would need taking to A&E

I suppose it is possible that she headed straight off to the hospital to get the girl checked over - which would be quicker than phoning an ambulance.

I do think you did the right thing, though tots - transporting a child without a seatbelt is gross negligence, I think.

i agree - -she may well have then head straight to hospital so your call to the police will corroborate...

I could see her going forward, the road slopes down slightly so I saw the little girl lifting up and then coming back down from the screen, so i am quite certain that it was her head that cracked the screen.

Little girl had a jacket/coat on so couldnt see a uniform, there are a few primary schools locally so could be anyone of them, plus some primary schools dont insist on uniforms.

If a 6/7 yo hit a car windscreen hard enough to crack it, she'd likely have quite a serious head injury. Are you sure she didn't hit the dog?
