Shhhh · 04/11/2010 12:12

Surley its not unreasonable to expect that if a PE kit is provided and at school that come the PE lesson it should be worn..? AND that a group of 5/6 yr old boys and girls are not running about in their knickers..?

What is happening to the world when a\ child feels uncomfortable or embarrassed about being in a vest and pants at five?????

Jeez, we have modesty chats here because we have boys and girls, oldest is eight and we need to make sure our dd (more than anyone) doesn't sit with her legs akimbo but that's as far as it goes. I would feel I had taken away something from our dcs if they had complexes about their little bodies so young.

littleducks · 04/11/2010 19:54

Well i felt uncomfortable as a 4yr old about 20 yrs ago so its hardly a new thing

samcrow, He is in reception class Confused

His uniform was very expensive ( by the way the £27 was not including his trainers he already had them, don't know why i wrote that down)
His uniform was very expensive, and only one place its available from too.

oldinboden · 04/11/2010 20:54

It'snot about sexuality, it's about dignity
Doing PE in pants is degrading.
Ok some 5 yos might not mind, but shouldn't everybody be treated in a way that their dignity is maintained whether of not they are aware of it.

Yes, I guess dignity is what I was trying to put my opinions down to. Thanks to those who helped out there.

calborolass Thu 04-Nov-10 18:55:22 : you questioned the fact that dd's PE kit cost around £30.

Do you require an itemised receipt..?

Dd's kit includes school logo'd items. Shorts/top/jumper, PE shoes, socks, PE bag etc,

Well if they make you pay so much you ought to demand you get your money's worth and that it is actually worn! Presume the school is private? These rules, although they might exist, are not legally enforceable in state schools.
Still think that Ofsted would have a field day if they saw a class of kids prancing about in their pants.

samcrow · 04/11/2010 21:37

wow redflag - is it a state school? If it is its my understanding that uniform can't be compulsory and I thought there had to be more than one supplier although not 100% sure about that

littleducks · 04/11/2010 21:51

not more than one supplier at state school here, would love to find out if that is a rule as i am disapointed with poor quality, over priced uniform

samcrow · 04/11/2010 21:57

littleducks this is from teachernet.gov.uk

"Governing bodies should ensure that the uniform chosen is widely available in high street shops and other retail outlets, and internet suppliers rather than from an expensive sole supplier"

So not a rule as such but definitely good practice, maybe ask your chair of governors.

Shhhh · 04/11/2010 22:07

kat2504, not a private school and we are same as others in that we have one supplier and have to have the uniform requested.

OP posts:
kat2504 · 04/11/2010 22:17

Primary schools may have uniform "guidelines" but they are not legally enforceable. those prices are ridiculous and I really don't see the need for the pricey logo tops for doing pe twice a week.

kat2504 · 04/11/2010 22:19

It might not be a rule to have more than one supplier, but if they choose not to have uniform that is not readily available in high street shops they should not expect that everyone can afford it.

What would they do if you sent your child with a similar top without the logo? They can't exclude them from PE and they can't punish the child! I'd bring it up with the school and ask the opinion of the governers.

littleducks · 04/11/2010 22:31

I agree with you Kat but it is hard to actually do, I have bought dd an asda plain colour cardi as an 'extra' if the £14 fleece and £9 (Bobbled after first wash) jumper are both dirty.

But dd is 4 and her teacher, head teacher etc. do hammer home the point that children should be wearing the logo-ed gear, and dd is an obedient child (at school at least Hmm) who like me doesnt like confrontation and wants to fit in

So for a quiet life and because i want dd to settle at her new school, i pay the price while inwardly cursing from the only shop that sells the uniform when the owner was totally unbothered when i complained that the jumper i had bought the week before was fading and bobbled already

samcrow · 04/11/2010 22:53

littleducks - its difficult when you are new to the school but the governors should still want to know if the uniform supplier isn't satisfactory.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 05/11/2010 08:12

Firawla - my post about Muslim boys was in relation to an earlier post which said that Muslim mums had asked the TA to cover their girls. No mention of the boys...

Shhhh · 05/11/2010 09:53

Maisie, did you not think that maybe the mums who asked for their girls to be covered only had girls..?

Looking to much into Imo .

OP posts:
dexifehatz · 05/11/2010 16:52

Posie, you really are a fuckwit of the highest order.Muslim culture ensures the dignity of its followers.Male and female.

redflag · 05/11/2010 16:54

Our uniform is mandatory and yes just a normal state school, The uniform has a lot of emphasys and if children attend without they will be sent home.

If they do not have PE kit more than twice they will be marked as absent.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 05/11/2010 17:23

Shhh - did you actually read the post to which I'm referring?
"I was a TA a while back an helped lo's get changed for PE- there was a few Muslim girls who would have happily run arous in their pants but their mothers wanted them to be more covered, so I made sure they were dressed appropriately"

I asked for clarification re the Muslim boys , ie were there any and what did their mothers ask they be dressed in. Don't think that's looking too much into to ask for clarification, but then again your opinions on this whole matter has been poles apart from mine, so wouldn't expect you to say anything to the contrary.

dexifehatz - I think the fuckwit comment (which is water off a ducks back btw) should have been adressed to me - you've got Posie and Maisie confused.

Anyway, really glad you've managed to resolve the 'issue' Shhh.

Firawla · 05/11/2010 19:58

Maisie they mentioned girls but we were just clarifying for you that boys would be asked to be covered too, yet for some reason you don't want to accept this info so just comes across as though you have some kind of "islam is sexist" agenda then
if it was an honest question regarding do muslim parents allow their boys to go round half naked and only worry about the girls covering - well that has been answered by me and others, i can assure you that it would be very very few muslim parents happy for their boys to do pe in underwear just as not happy for girls.
the minimum to be covered for both male and female is supposed to be navel to knees, that is the minimum standard for everyone, its seen as v indecent to go around in pants with your upper legs showing, for boys and girls both

posie i dont even have dds only boys, so no

kickarsequeensbonfireburnup · 05/11/2010 20:09

Posie, "ffs she's five....I think you've let your dd down big time if she's uncomfortable at this age with being in pants in front of boys.,"

Thats a very harsh comment to make!

Not neccesarily accurate either!

You have very misguided opinions Confused
