to ask DD (13) to go to bed at 9pm?

Well, am I? I get 'evils' if I do but I think it's perfectly reasonable really.

After all, if she doesn't then I get even more evils in the morning.

But all I hear is 'but all my friends stay up til xxx o'clock'.

What time do your dcs go to bed, o wise ones?

I try to get mine (11) into bed by about 8.30pm with a view to lights out at 9pm - can't always manage it though due to sports, other activities and homework.

Have to be up at 6.30pm and knackered if they don't get enough sleep.

It seems that I am actually being reasonable then.

For those of you who think I'm obviously some wooly pushover - I'm not. As I said before, she's a child and does as she's told. I don't have a problem with getting her into bed, it's just I wanted to know if I was being reasonable or not!

I'm now going to have a little google to see if I can find anything 'official' to show her regarding amount of sleep needed!

DD (14) goes to bed unasked at 8.30 on a school night- ds (11) would happily stay up till 9.30, but has to be in bed, teeth cleaned by 8.30. At the weekend, they stay up till 9.
Plenty of time for conversation before then.
And I have been known to go to bed before them. Smile

I'm like pinkjenny and lovesdogsandcats....there was no sitting with parents as a teenager in my house in the 70's.
Singing into the reel to reel tape recorder and trying to use curling tongs to look like Johanna Lumley were more fun.

DD is 13 and i would like her to go to bed about 9-930pm week days but that ain't ever gonna happen!! She's normally up in her room by about 830pm ish but will sit and watch tv,read, play her wii, practice her dance (sounds like an elephant coming through ceiling) I'm lucky if she goes to SLEEP before 1030pm. Weekends are meant to be 1030pm again though, especially if she has a mate sleep over i'm lucky if weekends are before 12am!! But she always gets up for school and is never late.

Everything I've ever seen on the internet about 12-18 yr olds suggests between 8-9 hours sleep as the average. If a child is getting up at 7am for school, that would suggest a going-to-sleep/lights-out time of 10.30pm. Some kids will need more, others less. Teens' circadian rhythms will mean that some will find it difficult to get to sleep at all before midnight.

The US sleep foundation says most teens need 9.25 hours sleep. So that would mean 9pm is ideal as bed time.

Hurrah. I can now quote this to show her that I'm not being unnecessarily cruel.

We are having ishoos with dsd at the moment - can someone more technologically minded than me please tell me how I can send a link to this thread in an email, so that dp can let her see that he is not an evil control freak and that not everyone else is still running about outside at half past nine on a school night Hmm

I think you can just copy the URL (the address bit at the top of the screen etc etc) and paste it into an email...although now I'm doubting myself Blush

DD is still up right now, she is watching man versus food on good food, and editing her fireworks photos on her hone with DP's help. She's not misbehaving, she doesn't have to get up for school in the morning, but she's only got another half hour because I'm nearly 30 weeks pregnant, I have been up since 6.30am, and I want to go to bed!

DD is up as well Loadlass, she is sitting with DH looking at something on the internet. She is hoping DH will take her to pick up DS 15.

Normally on a saturday she has to get up early as she volunteers at a playscheme but it's not on tomorrow.

DD has just gone to bed after taking dog for a walk. Without any prompting, she was just tired.

My DS (10) goes to bed at 9 but finds it very difficult to sleep. He has always been the same and sometimes has to read and is still awake at 10. Mind you he was a bad sleeper as a younger children. He does not neeed to be up until 7:30 so still has mainly 10 hours a night. My DD is completely different and goes to bed, lights out music on and is asleep in 5 minutes. Therefore I would say it does depend on the child.

DD had a lot of problems getting to sleep at that age fsmail, there is even a thread on MN about it. I did find out that at 10 or 11 many children actually need less sleep than teenagers.
Once DD started secondary she was going to sleep a lot earlier.
