I have just seen something so 'good mannered' in our local Waitrose; man was at the till and got a phone call on his mobile, obviously v. excited at being invited to something (yes, I was being nosey and listening in). Check out lady completed his transaction and he paid. He then finished the call and very politely apologised profusely to the check out lady, saying he knew how rude he was to accept the call but he had been offered tickets to an International game which was a big treat. The check out lady graciously accepted his apology - only in Waitrose Grin.

mumeeee · 02/11/2010 15:34

YABU. DD1 and my SIL shop at waitrose occansionly as they like the food from there. They do fine it expensive though so that's why they usually shop in Tesco. I would probably do the same if there was a Waitrose near us

LoopyLoops · 02/11/2010 15:40

Ugh, reading this thread has allowed to to procrastinate so much that I'm now going to have to run around the supermarket now.

Incidentally, I still haven't decided which one to go to today. Options are Waitrose or Morrisons. Help please.

Rocinante · 02/11/2010 15:48

I loved the Alan Coren quote - "The only thing I know about Sainsburys is that it keeps the riff raff out of Waitrose".

zebedeethezebra · 02/11/2010 16:07

YABU

capricorn76 · 02/11/2010 16:07

I love Waitrose. That is all.

LadyShapes · 02/11/2010 16:42

BOOTHS is the best supermarket by far. It makes Waitrose look like the Hyacinth Bucket of the supermarket family.

VivienScott · 02/11/2010 16:55

Yeah, just like people who bake their own cakes, have a veg patch or even worse an allotment, live in a detached house, own a Volvo, don't use their overdraft or have credit cards, buy their kids clothes from Gap or Boden, etc, the list is endless. All pretentious idiots! Or maybe they just like that the staff are much friendlier and helpful, the stores always look cleaner and more organised and it just a nicer calmer place to shop. Stop being such an inverted snob.

YABVU!

phipps · 02/11/2010 17:09

I did not know that about coconut milk [shop]. I think I pay about £1.19 for a tin of it in Waitrose.

SeaTrek · 02/11/2010 17:34

I shop at Morrisons; Waitrose; Lidl; farmers market; Tesco; Sainsbury; Asda - in that order.

Anyway, YABU, and very silly...almost horrid Grin.

SkippyjonJones · 02/11/2010 17:36

I don't understand why anybody cares which supermarket people shop in. YABU

TerrysNo2 · 02/11/2010 17:50

Its the only one in walking distance and I don't have a car. I also like it because there aren't any chavs there. Wink

pacinofan · 02/11/2010 18:30

Well, we love it for the 'reduced' section and regularly pick up fancy organic/free range/celebrity-endorsed meats for the freezer. I have absolutely no shame in telling my girls to look for the stickered items!

Fibilou · 02/11/2010 18:31

Yes Asdashopper you are perfectly entitled to call me a pretentious prat because I shop in Waitrose. As entitled as I am to call you a manky chav for shopping in Asda

MadameCastafiore · 02/11/2010 18:35

I love Waitrose and have Ocado deliver every week.

I have to go into ASDA occasionally as I work next to a big store and I have to say it is pretty vile, from the fag hags hanging around the front door to the inpolite people in the car park who don't have any idea about manners and giving way - vile vile vile.

Mind you Morrisons is vile too - only time I went in one this vile creature started swearing at me because I didn't smile at her DS - I put my basket down - told her that her son would grow up as vile as her if she kept on swearing infront of him and I hadn;t shopped there before but after meeting her wouldn;t be doing so again if that was the level of people you got in there and walked out.

I bake my own cakes, buy my kids clothes from Boden and GAP, drive a BMW as DH was worried about looking old in his mustard boden cords if he drove a Volvo when going to and from his allotment!

Asdashopper · 02/11/2010 18:42

Fibilou ...Asda shoppers are called manky chavs plenty of times on here

shoe other foot Wink

Yabu

It's my closest shop, about 3 mins walk. Not sure what it is that I'm pretending to be.

thinkingaboutschools · 02/11/2010 19:56

What an unpleasant comment. It says more about you than about anyone else

Ormirian · 02/11/2010 19:58

Oh come on! There was some shameless nasty snobbery on the Asda thread. It was supposed to be funny but clearly not everyone found it amusing. Just like this thread.

PercyPigPie · 02/11/2010 20:03

Yes.

I buy my chips from Waitrose. You seem to carry yours on your shoulder.

Mumcentreplus · 02/11/2010 20:03

WTF is going on on this thread??...supermarket predjudice???......[all jesting right?]

miffyjane · 02/11/2010 20:09

YABU

Waitrose look after their staff and pay a fair price to their suppliers. The food is good quality.

Our local store is just the right size to stock the things I need but not ridiculously big like other supermarkets.

The staff are friendly. I often bump into friends there and stop for a chat with each one whilst shopping. My children enjoy putting the green token in at the end.

Our waitrose has not yet got any automatic tills and I hope they don't for a long time.

Even the parking attendant is happy.

Nancy66 · 02/11/2010 20:11

You don't get the fat women fighting in the carpark at Waitrose...like you do at Asda.

Still, can't have everything I suppose.

Asdashopper · 02/11/2010 20:12

MN explodes Grin

Ormirian · 02/11/2010 20:32

I once aired the opinion that Innocent smoothies weren't all the healthy because of the vast amounts of sugar they contain. MN almost excommunicated me. I think this is the same sort of thing.

MN has shibboleths. Waitrose is one of them.
