1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. There are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother Colin. Or my younger brother Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin

So is it?

mumblechum · 30/10/2010 19:42

I don't think so. I think it's quite good actually.

NotQuiteCockney · 30/10/2010 19:44

I don't think so - it doesn't rely on racist beliefs, does it?

It's by Woody Allen iirc.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 30/10/2010 19:45

I don't see it as such. Because it does not say anything negative in any way. It's not saying there's anything wrong with being chinese, for example.

It's not very funny Grin but I don't think it's racist.

TattyDevine · 30/10/2010 19:45

I dont think it is on the basis that it doesn't make a Chinese person out to be anything in particular - like foolish, or ugly, or anything else that is negative.

It uses a Chinese name, but even this it doesn't make fun of.

It doesn't say its a bad thing that one in 5 are Chinese.

I can see any racism in it. It more pokes fun at statistics!

greenbananas · 30/10/2010 19:45

If you're not sure, don't risk telling it. There are lots of other jokes you could tell instead.

SuePurblybilt · 30/10/2010 19:46

It is funny. Made me laugh anyway. I wouldn't say it was racist, it doesn't say imply anything bad about anyone does it?

memoo · 30/10/2010 19:48

I was sure that is wasn't racist so I posted it a while ago om my FB because it makes me laugh! I know I'm sad!

Somebody suggested to me that it was a little racist and offensive but I really can't see how.

I'm now mortified that I might have offended somebody so I thought I'd ask you wise woman.

OP posts:
HerBeatitude · 30/10/2010 19:50

I thought it was 1 in 4.

KiwiKat · 30/10/2010 19:50

It's not racist at all.

EvilAllenPoe · 30/10/2010 19:51

I thought it was Tommy Cooper.

what would be rascist about it?> It says nothing derogatory about anyone.

memoo · 30/10/2010 19:53

Think it was actually Alan Cooper.

The person said she thinks it sounds like its making fun of a chinese name. but I disagree

OP posts:
memoo · 30/10/2010 19:54

Obviously I mean Tommy not Alan

TethHearseEnd · 30/10/2010 19:59

I think it was Tim Vine who is fucking hilarious.

"I've got sponge front door- don't knock it!"

"This new song's called 'Subtraction'- Take it away!"

TethHearseEnd · 30/10/2010 19:59

Oh, and joke not racist IMO.

nannynobnobs · 30/10/2010 20:00

Alan Woodpecker :) (channelling Dinnerladies)

TethHearseEnd · 30/10/2010 20:01

Yup, Tim Vine

JamieLeeCurtis · 30/10/2010 20:02

not racist

jameelaq · 30/10/2010 20:18

Can someone point me to where the definition of racist is saying something negative about someone else who is different to you?
I tell you what, there's nothing wrong about being negative about the Chinese as they have no ethical standards.
You may not know this but they have been cloning people for years. Not just sheep and mice but PEOPLE

jameelaq · 30/10/2010 20:20

Oh and another thing, surely only a maximum of 1 in 5 would be offended and only then if they were lefty social control freaks (aka socialists) and we know for certain that the Chinese are not socialist.

HabbiBOOOO · 30/10/2010 20:22

Yes, a country with a one child policy would feel the need to clone, wouldn't it? Where do you get this stuff?
