They are much classier, what with the brown paper bags and all.

Eh? Greggs do brown paper bags here.

dementedma · 26/10/2010 14:47

We don't have Sayers up here! My mother is from NW of England and yearns wistfully for a Sayers meat and potato pie lol.

WitchyFlisspaps · 26/10/2010 14:47

My husband much prefers Sayers over Greggs.

domeafavour · 26/10/2010 14:48

yanbu!!!

TheMeow · 26/10/2010 14:50

meltedmarsbars well you learn something new everyday...that shows how often I visit Greggs. [hgrin]

Alright then, Sayers have a nicer logo on their brown paper bags. [hwink]

I've never seen a Sayers or their bags! [hwink]

domeafavour · 26/10/2010 15:01

Is it a northern thing?
Are we going to get a North/South divide on this thread? Grin

Gemjar · 26/10/2010 15:04

Sayers is a million times better than Greggs, but they only really have them on Merseyside. Admittedly, there is one on EVERY street in Liverpool/across the Wirral, but there aren't really anywhere else.

badcoverversion · 26/10/2010 15:09

Did Sayers take over Hampsons? Hampsons are the friggin bomb.

I know somebody who once chucked a Greggs sausage roll on the pavement "for the birds" and a stray dog sauntered along, gave it a sniff and whimpered and ran off with its tail betweeen its leg. True story.

badcoverversion · 26/10/2010 15:11

Oh and there's a fair few Sayers in Salford.

pranma · 26/10/2010 16:40

The very best is Greenhagh's in Wigan area followed by Phillipe's in Skipton. However the best sausage rolls in the world [and wonderful pork pies]come from Drake and Masefield in Skipton.

TheMeow · 26/10/2010 16:41

I suppose I've just given away my location then Gemjar [hgrin]

On a more depressing note - Sayers have closed loads of their shops on the Wirral recently [hsad]

I blame Greggs. (But then I would wouldn't I lol).

CerealOffender · 26/10/2010 17:27

i prefer the sewage that spills out of our local storm drain at high tide to greggs

newwave · 26/10/2010 17:40

Sayers is a consolation prize for living in Liverpool :o

agedknees · 26/10/2010 18:36

Anyone remember Cousins?? They where also in Liverpool.

Sending a yosser kiss to newwaveSmile...

1234ThumbScrew · 26/10/2010 18:38

I'm not in Liverpool and we have a Sayers - yep much better than Greggs.

DurhamDurham · 26/10/2010 18:41

Never heard of Sayers, our main competition for Greggs here in the North East is Peters.Peters have been around for years but are outnumbered by Greggs which seem to be popping up everywhere.

In some parts of Tyne and Wear Greggs sausage rolls are known as Gateshead Dummies - because all the toddlers seem to have them whilst sat in their buggies around town! Cruel I know.

potplant · 26/10/2010 18:43

YANBU Sayers is much better. Didnt realise Sayers was just for us NWerners

Course it's not a patch on Waterfields.

MrsTumbles · 26/10/2010 18:46

We have 2 Sayers in Stockport, have about 50 million Greggs though Grin

Want2bSupermum · 26/10/2010 18:48

Sayers custard pies are to die for. I buy them in their Chester branch when I am home. I think Greggs is an abomination. When we were in Edinburgh we were stuck for breakfast and they were the only place open at 7am. DH and I couldn't find anything healthy apart from a cup of tea that was 'healthy' (less than 300 calories) for breakfast.

Sayers also do some nice breads but Deeside bakery in Neston is the best for bread. There was also Gerrards bakery on the Wirral which had lovely rum cakes. My gran would take me to the one in Heswall if I was good.

emptyshell · 26/10/2010 20:48

Greggs used to be good when they were just North-East based (and when I lived up there). Since they tried to become the Evil Galactic Empire of sausage rolls they've just become minging. Never heard the Gateshead dummies expression but that's absolutely classic!

Local highstreet's just succumbed to the advances... I shall still be going to Birds (the local chain around these parts) because, despite the endless queues of old ladies buying one slice of ham - their caramel doughnuts are genuinely gorgeous.

KenDoddsDadsZombieDogsNotDead · 26/10/2010 21:43

I used to love Sayers when I was a student in Liverpool.
Am from the land of Greggs and would never buy a pasty/ sausage roll from there, only stotties.

BitOfFunderthepatio · 26/10/2010 21:57

Sattersthwaites are infinitely preferable.

domeafavour · 27/10/2010 08:23

Na, Sattersthwaites aren't in the same league. Old school classy bakery!
