to want a real fur coat

choufleur · 24/10/2010 20:32

I don't me made from baby seals or anything endangered but a rabbit one maybe.

I eat rabbit, so can't see the problem with wearing a coat made from a by product.

pastaplease · 24/10/2010 21:22

I'd never wear leather either.

QuintessentialShadows · 24/10/2010 21:22

She stopped wearing it because she realized she agreed with the issues surrounding fur, much due to the work of, and awareness raised by Brigitte Bardot at the time.

southeastastra · 24/10/2010 21:22

i think they care quite alot (or rather people of my era do), i went to a rally in trafalgar square with my mate in the late 80s, tony banks gave a speech, was really passionate

i think it's sad that we're becoming more 'stupid' now, the 80s were so promising

forehead · 24/10/2010 21:23

Disco...my sil is always banging on about the rights of animals....but she wears leather shoes . The hypocrisy really pisses me off. You may think that i am vile for wearing fur, but i think that many of the so called animal activists are vile bullies who believe that they have the right to harm individuals who don't agree with them.

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:24

"Animal", *Quintessential? I think you'll find it was about 12 - 20 dead animals lying over you dear old ma's body.

choufleur · 24/10/2010 21:25

I eat meat, wear leather and mentioned before something skin rabbits (that have been shot after living happy wild lives).

OP posts:
CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:25

Yeah, and they don't care about children or old people, or post office closures either, forehead. Hmm

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:26

If you are ok with rabbits living wild, happy lives why on earth would you wear factory-farmed fur?????

choufleur · 24/10/2010 21:27

Actually a lot of wild rabbit are pests which is why farmers allow people on their field to shoot them.

forehead · 24/10/2010 21:27

Common sense are you sure that you work for the NSPCC? If so i would expect you to be able to argue your case without having to resort to name calling. If you are the face of the NSPCC then god help us

Discowife · 24/10/2010 21:28

CommonSenseSuze
Sadly I think you are right! oh well, I'm going to ditch this thread, people don't want to hear sense do they? It might tain their "lovely" fur coat.

Ps good on you for your work with NSPCC!! :)

forehead again, what the fuck do your other points have to do with you wearing fur?

Other people do other shit that is entirely unrelated so you have carteblanch to be a Cruella Devil wanna be?

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:28

...and those rabbits, shot on the farms are NOT turned into fur coats!!!!! Jeeez!

choufleur · 24/10/2010 21:28

Oh wouldn't want a half white/black coat like cruella. or a spotty one.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 24/10/2010 21:28

even if you are raising and skinning your own animals, to highly ethical standards you are still saying that's acceptable and so you would encourage people to raise and sell skins in highly unethical ways.

choufleur · 24/10/2010 21:29

no but I do have some nice slippers made from them.

OP posts:
CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:30

"If you are the face of the NSPCC then god help us" - but you wouldn't resort to name-calling.

Can't be bothered with idiots. Argue properly and stick to the subject.

musicmadness · 24/10/2010 21:30

Does everyone who objects to fur not wear leather? Have leather shoes etc?

No I don't wear leather at all. I have a fake leather coat because I do like the look but cannot imagine ever wearing real leather. It makes my skin crawl TBH.
Since when does caring about one thing mean you don't care about anything else? I care about abused children, I also care about people torturing animals for no good reason. Oh and yes I am veggie as well, though I have less objections to people eating meat if they choose to as we do need the proteins etc and i have to be careful to make sure I get the correct nutrients. I just can't bring myself to eat the meat when I know the animals have been treated badly in a lot of cases. I'd much rather that we reformed the meat industry to make sure that animal welfare was the number one priority. There is no reason to wear fur at all so anyone who wears it obviously just doesn't give a damn about living creatures who cannot fight back suffering for their fashion choice. Says a hell of a lot about the person and none of it good.

*forehead I don't agree with physically harming anyone for any reason apart from self defence, that doesn't mean I won't say exactly what I think of them to their faces.

QuintessentialShadows · 24/10/2010 21:31

I know commonsense Sad

But the child I was did not know about these things, and the memory of my mum looking beautiful in the coat is still valid. I would not ever wear a fur coat. Sheepskin, or reindeerskin maybe, as we live in the arctic, and my mum was first and foremost wearing it for warmth.

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:31

I think choufleur is in this just to get an argument going.

Nobody in their right mind would touch fur with a barge pole. THANK GOD!!!

HalloweeseG · 24/10/2010 21:31

If you wouldn't mind having an electrode stuck up your arse while you're skinned alive then wear fur.

While you're wearing it look out for the red paint, it'll be me throwing it.

Matthew Williamson has done a fur collection, hope he ups his security.

southeastastra · 24/10/2010 21:33

has he? that's quite shit of him

i do think that peta and the like could up their game a little, i can't remember the last good campaign from them, apart from the catwalk one which must have been quite a while back

forehead · 24/10/2010 21:36

Disco... if you and others were to argue your case in a calm rational manner, then us 'Cruellas' may be willing to listen. The fact that you and other posters resort to what can only be described as bullying reinforces the stereotype that many people have of animal rights activists as aggressive
individuals.

HalloweeseG · 24/10/2010 21:37

Yep, "Lapin" coats, nature meets nurture bollocks.

I think Peta have been a little on the quiet side recently.

alfabetty · 24/10/2010 21:38

It is really normal to see fur being worn in Europe and North America. The majority view appears to accept wearing fur. Only in the UK does there appear to be a fear or reluctance to wear it.

So the argument about whether you are in your right mind to wear fur etc doesn't really hold, it is just a subject that some people hold very strong views on (against) and are very vocal about it. Most people probably don't have a view either way.

Even the 'cheap meat' argument focusses on the 'nasties' that we are eating rather than the animal welfare element.
