to want a real fur coat

I don't me made from baby seals or anything endangered but a rabbit one maybe.

I eat rabbit, so can't see the problem with wearing a coat made from a by product.

The most commonly used trap for to catch animals is the wild is the steel-jawed leghold trap. When set by the trapper, the spring-loaded jaws are opened up and held with a metal clip. When an animal steps on it, the clip is released and they snap shut with incredible force. The trap is supposed to catch the animal?s leg, but they can also be caught across their back, neck or head. The trapped animal will be in agony, unable to escape, for hours or even days, until the trapper comes back to suffocate or beat them to death. Trapped animals have been known to chew off their own limbs in an attempt to escape. :(

And these leghold traps do not discriminate, of course. They catch any animal who treads on them. Trappers call these non-target animals ?trash?. These cruel contraptions are now banned in 88 countries, including the UK, and in several states across the USA. However, fur is still imported to the UK from animals who have been killed by leghold traps in other countries.

Other cruel devices used by trappers include the body grip (Conibear) trap, and the wire snare.

It's an absolute disgrace!

YADNBU if you want a vintage one. those don't contribute anything further to the meat industry.

YAB-a bit_U if you want it with freshly-dead animals.
i have a problem with the meat industry - it is inherently cruel. therefore, just as i have a problem with eating meat and animal by-products. (although am not fully vegetarian, but having ideals is one thing..living up to them...)....i also have a problem with fur. But in a way, if you don't have a problem with meat, then so long as the fur is as humanely got as meat is, knock yourself out.

If they are so warm, why do folk who do all that walking to north pole and stuff (Ranolf Fines?) not wear it? You always see them in modern, technical polar fabrics.

Buy yersena a Helly Hanson coat instead if you are cold.

BubsMaw · 24/10/2010 20:49

My SIL breeds rabbits for meat, I think they may be Rex, they look a lot like this

rabbitbreeding.info/standard-rex-rabbit/

She does it all properly, the animals are very well kept (arguably better kept than her 3 kids!)

choufleur · 24/10/2010 20:49

That's alright then zenon as I was asked for ID the other day buying booze. that would make me look about my age.

am very jealous! would love one. i lost both my rabbits this year :( am rabbitless it's horrible!

Hedgeblunder · 24/10/2010 20:50

Yabu- I think people look like old whores wearing them. Totally vile.

southeastastra · 24/10/2010 20:50

blimey i could not eat that! it's so cute

ravenAK · 24/10/2010 20:52

Pete Burns. Nuff said.

harassedinherWITCHYpants · 24/10/2010 20:53

I think they're awful!! I don't agree with them ethically, but they're just so......aging.

My sister and I have a very high quality vintage on that belonged to my grandmother. It's hung in our mum's wardrobe because we just don't what the hell to do with it!! Her estate was 50/50 between us, and 9 years on we're still arguing over who's share that was lol.

pastaplease · 24/10/2010 20:53

Castor Rex and Chinchilla Rex are the two breeds most used for fur (kept in truly horrible conditions and slaughtered inhumanely) - just so someone can have something fluffy to wear.

I don't usually feel so angry about threads, but I'm appalled that anyone would want to support the incredibly cruel, barbaric fur trade by buying a fur coat. I thought this debate was over in the '80s! Angry

SpookyNoise · 24/10/2010 20:54

Old whores is a very good description of people in fur coats Grin

Southeast, we have 3 rabbits at the mo. Two are just standard bunnies and the third is the rex. If you're near me, you're welcome to have one!

Discowife · 24/10/2010 20:54

YABU for all the reasons already mentioned above.

Rabbits are primarily bred EITHER for lush fur OR meat. So it is not a byproduct.

SpookyNoise · 24/10/2010 20:55

Aha, so I was right. Thank you Discowife.

BubsMaw · 24/10/2010 20:55

And SIL told me the skins were not used for anything, so waste product, as there was no demand for it, also the process the skins go through to make it suitable for use was somehow too logistically difficult. That's pretty much all I know, I didn't quiz her much further.

musicmadness · 24/10/2010 20:55

YABVU! Ethically it is just so wrong. I don't get why a rabbit would be any better anyway. You are still killing something (often in a very brutal way after a horrid life if they are farmed) for your fashion choice. It is just wrong! Angry

AmazingBouncingPoltergeist · 24/10/2010 20:56

Real fur coats always make me think of the saying "all fur coat and no knickers" Grin Cant remember where I heard that one.

southeastastra · 24/10/2010 20:56

standard bunnies Grin i'm in herts

Discowife · 24/10/2010 20:57

harassedinherWITCHYpants

The fur coat can be donated to PETA who will either use it for campaigns or you could give it to a shelter to use as something to keep the animals warm- its intended purpose! If you donate it you should be able to get a receipt for a tax break.

SpookyNoise · 24/10/2010 20:59

Dammit, I'm in Yorkshire.
We seem to inherit bunnies. Two of mine were strays that ended up with us. We did have a third stray but she died recently.
Wiggle (the Rex) was one of a pair that the owner couldn't keep anmore. Sadly, her sister, Geoff (named by my son after the Wiggles!), didn't make it through last winter. Because of their soft fur, they can suffer a lot in the winter and need lots of bedding.

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:00

WHAT??!!!! YAB VERY U! Angry

Fur clothing is VILE, DISGUSTING and DISGRACEFUL!!!

Ooo, for a bucket of red paint right now!

forehead · 24/10/2010 21:01

I have a vintage fur coat and i actually love it. I make no apologies for this. I recently visited Milan and there were loads of women wearing fur.
Flame if you want,i couldn't care less

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:03

Oh well, that's alright then I suppose. If women in Milan are wearing it then animals can't really be suffering incredible pain and torture. Phew!
