I don't me made from baby seals or anything endangered but a rabbit one maybe.

I eat rabbit, so can't see the problem with wearing a coat made from a by product.

aw poor geoff, they are beautiful rabbits.

rabbits are very intelligent creatures, the thought of wearing my rabbits skins makes me feel a bit ill.

southeastastra · 24/10/2010 21:05

i always think that they way a country treats animals could be indicative of how progressive that country was.

obviously some thickos in italy

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:05

That's because you're a normal, intelligent human being, southeastastra...unlike some! Wink

forehead · 24/10/2010 21:05

I think we should spend more time worrying about cruelty to children imho.

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:06

That's why it's such a tragedy that, despite a ban on fur farming (on ethical grounds) in the UK, the import of the vile stuff is still legal.

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:07

forehead, good point. I presume you've posted the same message on all the Style and Beauty and Housekeeping threads?

pastaplease · 24/10/2010 21:10

Grin Commonsensesuze!

The fact is that some people are self-centred and obnoxious. They will wear fur if it's available.

Fortunately the majority of people have a lot more decency.

LessonsinL · 24/10/2010 21:12

I have one, I'm sure we can come to a deal..

forehead · 24/10/2010 21:12

Common .., it just amazes me that people can get their knickers in a twist over animals but don't seem to have that same passion about abused children. If i want to wear my fur coat, it's MY business.

choufleur · 24/10/2010 21:14

What size LessoninL?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 24/10/2010 21:14

of course they do! were you not around for the mn baby p threads?

Discowife · 24/10/2010 21:15

I think we should spend more time worrying about cruelty to children imho.

Hmm I'm capable of worrying about both forehead?
Also you don't have to worry about it..just don't do it, it is hardly a necessity in a modern world is it?

Florin · 24/10/2010 21:15

I went to a 1940's event last weekend so most of the woman were wearing fur. I wore my grand mothers vintage fur coat for the first time. It was wonderful nothing keeps you warm like it. The coat is 60-70 years old best to wear it then for it to go in the bin and wasted just wish I could wear it normally. Also did have some possum fur gloves from new zealand they were my favourite things until I lost one :-(
I agree new fur isn't right if animals are killed inhumanly but we can't change the past by not wearing vintage fur

LelloLorry · 24/10/2010 21:15

Blush.
DD1 has a fur-lined coat, not sure what fur it is.
Never really desired a fur coat, but if this winter is anything like the last (drags on), then might be a good investment, if you'd wear it!

Each to their own! I don't think many could pull off a fur coat, though DD1 wears her UGG boots with hers, never thought she looked as awfully chavvy as the other girls around here, though might be (very) biased!

southeastastra · 24/10/2010 21:15

i think if you have any compassion for life you avoid fur

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:15

You're right. Like so many bad things in life, there's always some sicko who'll indulge.

Perhaps they'll get off on this.

Discowife · 24/10/2010 21:17

I can't stop people abusing their children... Why would that mean I should wear dead stuff? You aren't making a very coherent case here.

choufleur · 24/10/2010 21:17

DOes everyone who objects to fur not wear leather? Have leather shoes etc?

OP posts:
alfabetty · 24/10/2010 21:18

Fur coats aren't all floor length mink numbers. Look around NY, for example, or any scandinavian city, you'll see loads of young women in real fur, looking very stylish indeed.

Whatever the rights and wrongs, they don't (ethics aside) look awful, or the least bit grannyish.

Fur is a subject that people hold very, very strong anti-opinions on, so any online debate is going to be skewed against wearing fur. But in RL, I think it is a bit like fox hunting, I think the vast majority of people don't care either way.

DivineInspiration · 24/10/2010 21:18

Sorry OP, I think YABU, for all the reasons already mentioned. Fur is lovely, I agree - on animals.

I don't think vintage fur is entirely harmless, because essentially it's promoting fur as a fashion and as a desirable thing to own a garment made from: which then by extension helps to promote modern fur as desirable and fashionable. I don't see vintage fur as being on the same level as modern fur, but it still has the potential to be harmful.

Vegan non-leather wearer here, for the record.

Discowife · 24/10/2010 21:19

No I don't.

I have my grandmas lovely black mink fur coat, and my mums white and grey mink fur coat which we are planning on selling. I did not think there was a market for fur these days, seeing how "politically incorrect" it is.

I used to love watching my mum in her fur coat in winter when I was a child, she got it from my dad for their 25th wedding anniversary, as the animal had been a "silver mink", and it was tailored, and she was so dainty and beautiful.

alfabetty · 24/10/2010 21:21

Out of interest, is the (cheap) meat industry or leather industry better in the way it treats animals? I've always assumed that once you accept using animals for food or clothing, the form is irrelevant.

CommonSenseSuze · 24/10/2010 21:21

DivineInspiration, I agree with you. Fur is fur and wearing it is promoting it.

No, I don't wear leather. Vegan too.
