My friend is a student and single mum, and it seems that literally all she does is spend. She lives in a largeish house, for which she's told me the mortgage per month is £850. She has a new car every year and she and her DD have 2 foreign holidays per year too. She buys clothes for herself on a weekly basis from fairly expensive clothes and her DD is completely kitted out every season in brand new Next gear and 3 pairs of Clarks shoes. Also her DD does every activity under the sun, some of which are pricey (she has told me the cost of some of them).

Now I know some of you will say it's none of my business etc, but I am just intrigued to know where she gets her funds from. She says she only gets a small amount of maintenance each month, and obviously as a student won't be rolling in it with bursaries and grants (NHS student). I know some of it may well be on credit but surely there is a point where credit runs out, and in the current climate it's not easy to get more credit.

Am just curious, not jealous.

Why do you care? It's probably a private income.

HalfTermHero · 23/10/2010 22:43

expatinscotland · 23/10/2010 23:48

yes, it is get tae fuck. and i'll keep that in mind.

after reading this thread, i had to go onto youtube and listen to clips of spark, the swearing parrot.

sparky not only swears, but swears in Glaswegian - calling people bawbag, dobber and telling them, 'I'll kick yer baws . . . sohn.'

nosy cow. I would HATE a friend like this. Ask her if it's bothering you so much. Ladies, it's important to keep what's in the home private...you always get these busy bodies wanting to know you business...not on!

MrsLucasNorth · 24/10/2010 08:32

Haven't read whole thread, but how long did she work for prior to dd/college. Perhaps she planned to go back to college for a while and saved every spare penny while she was working.
If she just has 1 dd it's easier to afford/justify spending the money on 1, I'd imagine, that if you have to support 2 or 3 kids.
Suspect there's probably some generous relatives in the background too.

I am sure people think like this about me sometimes. I am a single mum I do work fulltime but after the mortgage, bills, food and petrol are paid there is not much left.

I got my mortgage by using my inheritance (my lovely grandparents) for a deposit (it's only a small 2 bed flat)

My daughter always has good clothes as my mum buys her a basic wardrobe in winter and summer and she prefers M&S. I get all her shoes, coat and anyhing else is sales or eBay. My clothes however come from Charity shops (I head to the wealthier areas) and eBay.

My car comes from a work loan which I pay out of my wages.

I enjoy cooking so can feed us both really good meals on about £30 a week, less if needs be.

I have one holiday in England a year which I pay for and one abroad I have family in Spain and France so I only pay for trains or flights.

For Xmas and birthdays I normally ask my parents for things I need for the house.

I use Freecycle

I have accounts with Next, Kays and Marshall Ward my monthly payments to all of them combined are about £40 a month.

It can be done, I am very lucky that my parent are so genrous, I don't expect it though and I do worry that people think I am on the fiddle sometimes :)
