to wonder how some people manage to afford so much "stuff"

My friend is a student and single mum, and it seems that literally all she does is spend. She lives in a largeish house, for which she's told me the mortgage per month is £850. She has a new car every year and she and her DD have 2 foreign holidays per year too. She buys clothes for herself on a weekly basis from fairly expensive clothes and her DD is completely kitted out every season in brand new Next gear and 3 pairs of Clarks shoes. Also her DD does every activity under the sun, some of which are pricey (she has told me the cost of some of them).

Now I know some of you will say it's none of my business etc, but I am just intrigued to know where she gets her funds from. She says she only gets a small amount of maintenance each month, and obviously as a student won't be rolling in it with bursaries and grants (NHS student). I know some of it may well be on credit but surely there is a point where credit runs out, and in the current climate it's not easy to get more credit.

Am just curious, not jealous.

Maybe her "small" maintenance pays for it ... her idea of small and yours may differ

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 17:50

She has told me the amount she gets, Talker. Believe me, she is very open about finances. And nancydrewrocked, I didn't calculate her earnings, she has told me the amounts she gets in bursaries etc. And it's not just a few clothes from next and a couple of holidays, it's at least 2 holidays every year, a new car every year, a whole new wardrobe and lots of shoes for her daughter every season.

She must lease the car surely to get a new one so often? It can work out cheaper than buying one. But still.....if you ever find out, please let me know, as we both work, earn good salaries and I certainly don't have huge amounts of spare cash for luxuries.

Riven a couple at my church get a new car every year Grin - I don't get it - they're always really nice cars and I can't understand why they get rid of them to replace with another nice car Confused

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 17:55

My thoughts exactly PortoFangO. My DH works and earns a good wage, yet we don't seem to have the unlimited budget that she seems to have.

Maybe she just lies to you because you are clearly exceptionally nosey?

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 17:57

Oh fuck off nancydrewrocked. Does it really matter if I wonder how she affords things? It really is making you irrationally annoyed isn't it?

People trafficking. Or perhaps she harvested her internal organs. Or something.

poshsinglemum · 23/10/2010 17:59

Are you jealous? Personally I can't abide clutter.

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 17:59

Poshsinglemum I did say in my OP that I'm not jealous

it's making you annoyed enough to post about it

duchesse · 23/10/2010 18:04

I personally feel that less is more. My alter ego will be decluttering shortly, and making fabulous amounts of money flogging unwanted stuff on ebay.

She is probably deeply in debt, OP. And that's not a comfortable or enviable place to be these days.

forehead · 23/10/2010 18:05

Mind your own business fgs.

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 18:06

Lulumaam, did I say at any point that it annoyed me?

OP posts:
Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 18:06

And fuck off, Forehead

I would imagine that she must have well of parents who are helping her.

I would think that for that long, unless she was incredibly crafty, she could not sustain that amount of credit (new cars etc).

nancydrewrocked · 23/10/2010 18:07

I'm not in the slightest bit annoyed.

I am however amused by your ill-disguised jealousy/nosiness. In fct I am especially amused by your hissy fit now you have been called on it Grin

mamatomany · 23/10/2010 18:08

I bet it's all on credit, I had a friend like her, fur coat and no knickers.
All came crashing down on her and now the house has been sold, credit cards kind of paid off although a lot is written off when you bankrupt Angry a whole other thread there anyway, she couldn't give a fuck and will start all over again.
If you pay back your debts you are in the minority these days.

forehead · 23/10/2010 18:08

Why does she have to be in debt? she may be rich.

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 18:08

Fuck off Nancydrewrocked.

OP posts:
Lulumaam · 23/10/2010 18:09

goodness, you're a little ray of sunshine, aren't you?

with all you're 'fuck offs' and arsiness

you asked if you were being unreasonable, this part of MN gets strong opinions

if you don't want to hear it, post in the 'fluffywufybunnykins' section

Curiousmama · 23/10/2010 18:09

Chil1234 I thought that about the game [hgrin]

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 18:09

Mamatomany, LOL I like the fur coat and no knickers saying.
