to wonder how some people manage to afford so much "stuff"

My friend is a student and single mum, and it seems that literally all she does is spend. She lives in a largeish house, for which she's told me the mortgage per month is £850. She has a new car every year and she and her DD have 2 foreign holidays per year too. She buys clothes for herself on a weekly basis from fairly expensive clothes and her DD is completely kitted out every season in brand new Next gear and 3 pairs of Clarks shoes. Also her DD does every activity under the sun, some of which are pricey (she has told me the cost of some of them).

Now I know some of you will say it's none of my business etc, but I am just intrigued to know where she gets her funds from. She says she only gets a small amount of maintenance each month, and obviously as a student won't be rolling in it with bursaries and grants (NHS student). I know some of it may well be on credit but surely there is a point where credit runs out, and in the current climate it's not easy to get more credit.

Am just curious, not jealous.

Me fuck off? Oh no I am here for the long haul now.

wouldliketoknow · 23/10/2010 18:10

remind me of a former friend, single mum of 1, student, huge house from the divorce, decent maintanence, £1200 a month student loan, she didn't go to lectures, so was thrown out university, but she is counting she won't have to repay it as she didn't graduate, ...or works at all for that matter. people also feel sorry for single mums and gives them stuff they wouldn't to me and you. this one is pretty smart at getting frre things, told the sure start lady she didn't have anything to feed her child so they would bring her groceries, got disappointed they didn't let her choose what they bought.

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 18:10

Lulumaam so it's okay for others on here to be rude to me and arsey with me but not fine for me to be arsey back. Okay then, whatever!

Thank you OP, you have just proved what i thought, you are a jealous and vindictive individual and with friends like you , who needs enemies.
you should consider taking on another job so that you can have a new car instead of posting about your 'friends' spending habits.

Lulumaam · 23/10/2010 18:13

no-one's told you to fuck off

people are exasperated by the tone of the thread, probably in the light of the gazillion benefit claimers/scroungers threads

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 18:14

How am I jealous and vindictive? Just because I've told some of your "wannable middle class and PC" cronies to fuck off?

OP posts:
Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 18:15

Should have read wannabe

nancydrewrocked · 23/10/2010 18:15

Er no one has been rude to you.

You start an obviously judgey slightly snidey thread about your so called friend and are told that you might like to mind your own business.

And that comes as a suprise to you?

PortoFangO · 23/10/2010 18:15

I too would be curious though, (human nature after all) if i had a friend with no discernible income and huge amount of disposable cash. At least I would be worried enough about a friend if I suspected she was running up huge credit card debts.

Mind you, DH has set up a web cam today (for Skype stuff) and I have joked about setting up a new home business involving my bosoms and sad men with credit cards......

Pushmeinthepool · 23/10/2010 18:17

Fuck off Nancydrewrocked.

OP posts:
forehead · 23/10/2010 18:17

OP, if you were not jealous you would not have reacted so angrily when i told you to mind your own business, you are also judgemental and nasty. Girl you have ishoooooooos.

nancydrewrocked · 23/10/2010 18:18

Oh I see this is actually a competition to see how many times you can tell someone to "fuck off".

Actually if you don't mind I think I'll stay. I'm rather enjoying myself Grin

TethHearseEnd · 23/10/2010 18:19

Funny how so many people have a friend like this.

OP, can everyone else see your friend too?

Quattrocento · 23/10/2010 18:20

I recognise that some people do cost up people's lifestyles. But why? Why not do something else with your time than count up how many pairs of children's shoes your friend buys? Go to the theatre. Take up running or tennis.

expatinscotland · 23/10/2010 18:24

I agree, Quattro.

I mean, you can MN instead of costing up friends' and neighbours' lives, among other ways to spend one's time more productively than mentally tabulating how much someone else has and speculating on how they got it.

Or just ask her instead of starting threads on the WWW about it.

LynLiesNomoreZombieFest · 23/10/2010 18:28

IME the bank of Mum and Dad.

Some people are very good with money and others are not.

You can lease a car instead of buying it.

You can inherit money.

There are an infinite number of answers.

HalfTermHero · 23/10/2010 18:29

FUCK OFF NANCYDREWROCKED!

OOhhhh, yes,I feel much better now and I am almost certain I am making a valid point on this thread, lol Grin (no offence meant, Nancy Smile)

HalfTermHero · 23/10/2010 18:31

Seriously though, someone is bankrolling her. It is not very likey you would keep getting more and more credit, esp for cars etc with no job.

Hedgeblunder · 23/10/2010 18:32

I think when dc is born I might end up being talked about like this- my PIL and parents are massively generous, and both love to utterly spoil their family to the extent that it causes offence sometimes.
I know my dc is going to get whatever he/she wants and will have new clothes and toys every week. Both mine and dp's parents were very very poor when we were younger but do well now.

FattyArbuckel · 23/10/2010 18:37

Maybe she has a lot of financial help from her family and her child's father.

GMajor7DeadlySins · 23/10/2010 18:45

Just poppong in so that I can be told to fuck off.

GMajor7DeadlySins · 23/10/2010 18:45

er popping Blush

HalfTermHero · 23/10/2010 18:50

Go on, GMajor, Fuck off Grin

HalfTermHero · 23/10/2010 18:50

(I am defo 'winning' the argument on this thread now.....)

GMajor7DeadlySins · 23/10/2010 18:51
