to keep my (ground) coffee in the fridge?

Given how many coffee snobs there are on MN (what a revealing thread!), where should I be keeping my coffee? I currently have it in the fridge as I read somewhere (a food supplement?!) that it keeps it fresher, whereas my parents disagree and keep it at room temperature.

AIBU to stick to keeping mine in the fridge?

YANBU I always keep it in the fridge. Thats what it says on the packet, "Refrigerate after opening for up to 4 weeks"

I think you're right. We always used to keep beans in the fridge to keep them fresher.

Mine is in the fridge. It doesn't say anything on the packet, it's froma man at the market who grinds it for you....

Anal purists I know insist the freezer is the place to keep fresh coffee/beans etc but I hate going into the freezer so fridge it is.

Jam, peanut butter, vegemite etc are kept in the cupboard (unless its sugar free jam which I think you need to keep in the fridge as it lacks the preserving benefits of sugar)

Dh is American and therefore a coffee drinker to the core. His parents keep their coffee in the freezer to keep in fresh, but we read a detailed article - where we read it escapes me - explaining quite clearly why this wasn't good for coffee, and since then we've kept it in an airtight container at room temp.

Sorry can't really remember all the whys and wherefores, so not much help!

What you mean you dont grind them fresh each time on a conical burr grinder? Hmm

Just kidding - I have a nice tin of Illy in the fridge, ready ground.

My brother is a coffee snob. He roasts his own beans . He buys them green, from a website called, ironically, "coffee snobs". He calls Starbucks "Charbucks".

I am the black sheep of the family. When I was last with him he made me a coffee. It was lovely. I didn't dare ask for a splash of milk though. People have been disowned.

PanicMode - Of course dahhhling - right next to our hanging game!! (Although mine sometimes accidentally finds it's way into the fridge - making for ridiculous cold toast coverage...)

Mine is in the freezer - it reduces the rate at which the volatile oils escape and stops the oils oxidising so fast

Buy small amounts of freshly roasted beans, keep in airtight container, in dark place at room temperature. Grind when needed.

But I live in NZ, Land of the Long Flat White. [hgrin]

zachary is spot on IMO...

the only issue with the fridge for ready ground (as keeping cool is a good idea hence pantry also good) is that if there is any chance of condensation or your coffee getting damp that is NOT desirable.

really, once ground (or vacuum pack is pierced), coffee is at its best for 7-10 days....

Don't keep it in fridge...it absorbs the odours of other food around it. You're supposed to keep it in an airtight container at room temp.

But if you keep the beans in the freezer surely that would cause them to fracture in the (burr) grinder? I can't see how freezing them would aid a good grind. Likewise, if you store ground coffee in the freezer I don't see how you would get a good even finish without the 'rivulets' that cause a bad espresso. Surely the coffee would swell slightly from being frozen? I would compare it to the idea of putting fresh herbs in the freezer - never as good as when they are, well, fresh.

Yanbu to keep it in the fridge but should be in a very, very airtight container and preferably in the door. A larder or a cool kitchen should suffice really tho.

I keep fresh coffee in a tin in the fridege, AND you should leave it at room temp for five minutes before useing.

Me too everything, it only lasts a week, what would be the point of freezing?

I don't buy beans too often, but cannot imagine the freezer being good for the flavour.
