To find people who give their daughters the nickname "Moo" annoying?

I know it's only a small thing but it's so irritating; whatever happened to a bit of originality? I know about 5 people that call their DD's "Moo" as a nickname.

Some of our close friends have a DD called Molly, and they call her Molly-Moo constantly. We have had to endure the tale again and again about how up until the age of 5 "Molly-Moo" thought her real middle name was Moo. Oh the hilarity of it!

I post on another forum and there is a woman on there who's DD also has a name beginning with M, and she calls her Moo, too. Every post is about "Moo" and "Moo did this" rather than her proper name.

There are also some other mums at the school that call their DD's this. What makes me laugh is they all think they're being so clever and original, when they're not. Find a more original nickname!

Oh dear, I call my DD 'cheeky scamp' and often abbreviate just to scamp. On occasion I call her this in public.

AIBU or does this pass your originality test Hmm

harassedinherpants · 18/10/2010 13:59

Yabu in my opinion!

But then my 4yr old dd's nickname is Boo. Her name is Libby and we call her Boo, Biddy and Biddy Boo. I know at least 3 other friends who call their dd Boo, but I don't really care tbh. It's a term of affection.

daisyj · 18/10/2010 13:59

Errm, yes, YAB a bit U. Our daughter has an M name and we call often call her mouse. There is a limited number of pet names going around generally, I'd say. Bet it irritates the hell out of you when couples call each other 'darling' too, doesn't it? Gah! Soooo unoriginal Grin.

saffy85 · 18/10/2010 14:00

I call my DD bear. As is her name then bear. Only when I'm talking to her, not about her to others. Never noticed other peoples' nicknames much, but I am aware bear probably sounds stupid. Blush

Pushmeinthepool · 18/10/2010 14:01

I think it's the endless tales about my friend's DD thinking her real middle name is Moo that is putting me off the name TBH

Mine get called Egg, Bean and Loo-laa
But I wouldn't object to Moo either

Give over

TattyDevine · 18/10/2010 14:04

I sort of agree with you, in that I find it a bit weird and irritating, or would if I knew about 5 of them and had to hear it all the time I suppose.

But I dont actually think its fair about the originality thing in that I agree its not that original, but I doubt they are think they are being original and funny - their choice of nickname (and these things tends to choose itself) is more based around the child's personality etc...I doubt they are sitting there patting themselves on the back about it, they probably barely realise they are doing it.

Some people are just nicknamey...

Pushmeinthepool · 18/10/2010 14:04

Egg Bean and Loo-laa are pretty original actually :o

Moo is unimaginative and there are too many of them! Wink

Grin at pagwatch, I was thinking the same

Pushmeinthepool · 18/10/2010 14:06

Believe me, Tatty, the people I referred to whose child thought her name was Moo know they're doing. In fact they talk about how the call her Moo, all the time, and laugh away at what a sweet nickname she has.

we call DS2 wally-woo. His name does not begin with a w.

Eve · 18/10/2010 14:07

...I call my ponies Rosie-Moo, Boo-Boo, Sunny -Moo and monty-moo.. (the moo is the nickname and I like shouting it their fields at them)

...and poppy grumpy moo cow and lots of other names?

is that acceptable? :)

PheasantPlucker · 18/10/2010 14:08

Christ, I wish all I had to whinge about was the nicknames other mothers give their children.

No, I don't have a 'Moo'. But I have more important things to worry about than judging mothers who do.

Sorry and all that. YABU. And smug.

clemetteattlee · 18/10/2010 14:08

Are nicknames supposed to be "original". I thought they were just pet names that the family enjoyed. I didn't realise they had to pass an imagination test.

proudnscary · 18/10/2010 14:09

Oh dear god, does it really matter??

ComeScareWithMe · 18/10/2010 14:09

I think you need to stop over thinking stuff.
I call my dd Gaby-boo sometimes but didn't realise people were that bored they got annoyed over such boring things.

Beb · 18/10/2010 14:11

I think 'moo' is quite a sweet little nickname!!

The only time this sort of thing has ever grated on me is a FaceBook friend has two adorable children called William (Billy) and Ruby. EVERY facebook status she posts is "just going to the park with Billy Boo and Ruby Roo" etc etc. I have never heard her refer to her children as anything other than "Billy Boo and Ruby Roo". What's wrong with 'going to the park with Billy and Ruby"?!!

rant over

SalFresco · 18/10/2010 14:13

I think you just have one slightly irritating friend. YABVU on the rest of it.

AllOverIt · 18/10/2010 14:13

DD gets called 'chunky monkey', sometimes shortened to 'chunk' Blush. She's not in the least bit chunky and is a wee little thing. DS called her it when she was a baby, and it kind of stuck. God knows what people think when they hear me say it, but then, I couldn't give a shit really.

Merryseveredlegs · 18/10/2010 14:13

Ha, is vair upper class to have nicknames of such nature.

Bunny!
Mouse!
Moo!
Bear!

Kind of reverse anthropomorphism.

Thoroughly jolly and rather sweet IMHO. (Jilly would approve).
