To find people who give their daughters the nickname "Moo" annoying?

I know it's only a small thing but it's so irritating; whatever happened to a bit of originality? I know about 5 people that call their DD's "Moo" as a nickname.

Some of our close friends have a DD called Molly, and they call her Molly-Moo constantly. We have had to endure the tale again and again about how up until the age of 5 "Molly-Moo" thought her real middle name was Moo. Oh the hilarity of it!

I post on another forum and there is a woman on there who's DD also has a name beginning with M, and she calls her Moo, too. Every post is about "Moo" and "Moo did this" rather than her proper name.

There are also some other mums at the school that call their DD's this. What makes me laugh is they all think they're being so clever and original, when they're not. Find a more original nickname!

whoneedssleep. not sure if you meant that for me or someone else but if you read my posts you will see that my dcs have nicknales and i have no problem with them.

YunoWhatYouDidLastSummer · 18/10/2010 14:54

Roffle at Pag and Greenie getting deleted so early on this thread.

I'm afraid I call my daughter Missy-Moo, OP. I hadn't realised I was supposed to be clever and / or original in my children's pet names. I shall try harder in future.

Spidermama · 18/10/2010 14:55

I think there'sa divide here between people who are totally unselfconcious about using nicknames in public and those of us who would be far too embarrassed to.

I would feel really cheesy and twee using my kids pet names in public and I think they'd hate it too.

I have a sort of respect for those of you who are happy to call out out, 'Mindy-Moo-Moo, don't forget your lunch box' in front of everyone else. It must be liberating to be so unself-concious.

YunoWhatYouDidLastSummer · 18/10/2010 14:56

Oh, Oh! And! Sometimes I call her "Moodles".

I can't even kissmy children goodbye in the playground now without them turning beetroot red and pushing me away. I insist on continuing to try though. Grin

roundthebend4 · 18/10/2010 14:57

Spidermama · 18/10/2010 14:58

I really hate it when people call children 'sausage'. Yuk!!

faverghoulles · 18/10/2010 14:59

Yuno - me too! Wait til you've descended to Moodle-Doo, you don't get much lower than that :o

mumof2monsters · 18/10/2010 15:00

My DD is called Meghan and we sometimes call her Megsy Moo or Moo but I have to admit I have hardly ever heard anyone call their DD's Moo. Lots of parents have funny names for their kids but I will admit that I don't bore people with tales of my kids all the time and I don't refer to my DD as Moo to people just tend to call her it to her.
She loves me calling her it. I have to say tho it is not something that would really annoy me so I think YABU a bit!

BrokenRing · 18/10/2010 15:01

Most of ours get called Mimp or Mimpy, or Mump or Mumpy, or Mup, no matter what they're called.

One has a name we occasionally Italianise and add an animal name after it, since they got a particular cuddly animal as a present when they were born, and it's their 'symbolic' animal now - they have lots of wooden, cuddly, ornamental versions of this animal. eg. Margarita Muskrat (which is not the real name of course). sometimes I add "ensis" on the end of the animal word - Muskratensis, as if the child is Margarita, a citizen of the town of Muskrats, for example. I try not to say them too much in public though.

spookyhalloweenFluffypomkins · 18/10/2010 15:03

My dn is "moo". her name is Mya so she is Mya-moo.

also will call my own dd Moo. when she is naughty "you little moo"
better than "you little cow" me thinks? Grin

emptyshell · 18/10/2010 15:04

My mum used to call my little brother "my little bluebottle" till smart arse me, finding out a bluebottle was a type of fly piped up with, "does that mean he's a pest?"

Hulababy · 18/10/2010 15:07

I use lots of pet names and nn for my 8y DD. I don;t think anyone really thinks they are being original and clever when they use a pet name for their little one do they? Just that they are being nice.

And illeteration is the most common form of pet names too. being they flow well together geneallt.

Not sure why so irritating Hmm

Oh - my DD is Mollie. She gets Mollie Moo, Mollie Mouse, Milly Molly Mandy, as well as all the "common" names like poppet, sweetie, baby, sugarplum, etc......

Megatron · 18/10/2010 15:10

DD gets called 'Do Dah'. Have no idea why, it's just what we call her. I don't really care what anyone else thinks about that to be honest.

HeadlessPrinceBilly · 18/10/2010 15:18

Mine are Pickle, Pie and Fifi. All boys bTW! Actually Fifi was nicknamed Foof by the older boys but I discouraged it as its a bit like calling your kid minge or fanjo or something.

You're going to hate me. I often call my DS Mister-Moo. Not sure why, it just happened.

Browncoat · 18/10/2010 15:46

agree with daft names (or daft names in my opinion! haha) ... my sister called my DD mini-mouse and I hate it ... Blush

whoneedssleepanyway · 18/10/2010 15:49

Shit, I have a bear too. I will sit down with DP tonight and try and come up with something original, witty and different. Although, I had better not make it too different as his Christian name has been decreed as "hideous" by the great and good of MN. I am clearly a failure at names!

Mine all know to answer to Angus. Which is the dogs name.

I know. I get tired.

lucky1979 · 18/10/2010 16:06

DD's main nicknames are Winkus, Elowinkie, Ella-Bella-Boo, Flowerpot or The Stinker.

I don't use these (apart from possibly The Stinker) when talking to anyone but her or DH though.

I vagely say to DH we should start using her real name more at some point, but until she starts to introduce herself as Flowerpot then I don't really see too much of a problem.

RockBat · 18/10/2010 16:07

DD is Monkey. A big fat fail in the originality stakes. But hey, I didn't sit down with a nickname guidebook and pick it, it evolved. So Monkey she is and I don't really give a toss if anyone else notices or cares.
