to be a tiny bit judgmental about some requests on Freecycle? Yes, sorry, it's another FC complaint. I have judgey pants on today MNers.

This has probably come up before. In fact I'm not even certain I haven't commented on it before myself. But people are getting increasingly cheeky about Freecycle requests aren't they? Please tell me I'm not imagining it?!

This week alone, I have seen requests for a Blackberry mobile (it must be a newer Curve or better), a DSi (specifically not a DS) and a car. A frigging car, I'm telling you! It has to be a decent car btw (can't remember the exact wording, I deleted the email as soon as I got it out of shock at the bloody cheek of the man!). How can people actually ask for these things?

AIBU to be judgey about this? I can never bring myself to ask for anything on there, and there are people asking for cars!

Some people are just chancers and have no shame.

Wonder if they ever get any of the stuff they ask for

taintedpaint · 16/10/2010 17:50

I haven't had any emails saying they have received the stuff (surprised, not). Everytime I think I've seen it all, someone asks for something even more unbelievable!

YANBU. I saw a request by one person wanting a condition sofa bed and a 5 berth caravan which MUST have an MOT.
If I had these things I would be selling them - not giving them away!

emptyshell · 16/10/2010 17:58

We had the request for an iPad... with the attached sob story of how they were saving to have their chronically ill cat put to sleep so couldn't buy one themselves.

Just put a telly on ours - I'm mentally braced for the barrage of sobstories I'm about to get (although will have to go a long way to beat the premature babies needing a PS2 one).

HeadlessLadyBiscuit · 16/10/2010 17:59

My favourite was the one where someone said that after extensive research, they had decided they needed a Bugaboo and if anyone had one they no longer needed, they would be happy to come and take it off their hands :o

TondelayooohSchwarlock · 16/10/2010 17:59

YABU. They can ask for what they want. You don't have to give it them. (shrugs)

MaimAndKilloki · 16/10/2010 18:05

Doesn't hurt for them to ask does it? I've never understood why anyone cares what other people ask for on freecycle.

taintedpaint · 16/10/2010 18:16

I don't really mind them asking, I get a laugh out of it, I just judge them for their cheek. Grin

We gave our old telly to the local Home Aid mob - they give stuff to people who've been homeless when they get a council flat, so you know they are at least in genuine need. Doesn't guarantee they are "deserving" exactly, but at least they have a genuine reason for needing it!

HeadlessLadyBiscuit · 16/10/2010 18:37

Yes of course they can ask but it's amusing to take the piss. Well I think it's a bit po-faced not to find it amusing personally :)

Panzee · 16/10/2010 18:38

It's like those ads in Private Eye. Do you think anyone ever gives them any money?

MrsLucasNorth · 16/10/2010 18:57

Can someone post a link so I can go and have a nose. Have loads of stuff to get shot of and the nursery I work for is after garden stuff at the mo so wouldn't mind checking it out.

Galena · 16/10/2010 19:00

You can tell the weather's getting worse - we've had about 10 requests for tumble driers recently. One with the obligatory 'just diagnosed with cancer, not working, 3 kids, ' etc story.

Bugrit · 16/10/2010 19:00

Once put at TV on there and had a msg from would-be recipient telling we when it would be convenient for me to deliver it...

taintedpaint · 16/10/2010 19:13

Here you go MrsLN.

I bloody hate the personal life X-Factor style sob stories Galena, it's shocking the things people will make up. Don't mean you btw, MrsLN, I would willingly give things to a nursery garden if I had them.

The delivery thing is another bugbear of mine Bugrit, I don't think you should ever ask for delivery unless the person offering has specified that they are willing to. It's just a step too far!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 16/10/2010 19:16

I'd love a thread on here full of these sob stories I hear so much about.

We could vote for our favourite. We could award them a trophy

mitochondria · 16/10/2010 19:20

I've seen specific pram ones too.

Fair enough - "I need a pram".

But "I need a Bugaboo" - no you don't.

Today's wanteds included - a microwave, a washing machine, a petrol lawn mower and a Peek and Play Discovery Dome.

I don't mind what people ask for, but it does tend to clog up my inbox. And strangely - it never seems to be the same people that offer.

taintedpaint · 16/10/2010 19:24

I've seen the Bugaboo request, is there a secret society of freeloaders who have them? I don't think I could afford one and I could never ask for something so expensive!

Hecate, if you start the thread, I am sure it would fill up in no time! Grin

Galena · 16/10/2010 19:33

I was cheeky once though and asked for a BabyDan playpen or similar and was actually given one!

onceamai · 16/10/2010 19:53

I get your point but can top it. When DC's had grown out of pram, crib, cot, linen thereof, bouncer, changing station, etc. I phoned social services and was snootily told those items could only be provided brand new due to health and safety regulations. The deserving pfb of a Merchant Banker was most grateful as were his three younger sisters!!!!!

wahwah · 16/10/2010 20:17

It's not snooty, it's just if anything happened it's doubtful the parents would go ' that's ok, you couldn't have known the Moses basket stand would break and my baby would roll out and fracture their arm'.

SpookyNoise · 16/10/2010 20:20

Hey, I asked for a microwave recently. We gave one away about 3 months ago, and then ours broke. How typical. Bloody sods law. We didn't get offered one when we asked though. My lovely parents will hopefully get us one for Xmas.

taintedpaint · 16/10/2010 20:58

I'm guessing you asked for a 'microwave' and didn't specify the brand, colour, age and high-tech functions it must have though. Am I right? That's where the shock value is for me.

OP posts:
SpookyNoise · 16/10/2010 21:03

I said I didn't care what make, colour or power, as long as it worked.

BlairWaldorfsHairband · 16/10/2010 21:11

Omg, YANBU! Just checked my local group out of interest and some guy is on there requesting (in separate but consecutive posts):
"good sized" tv with remote
car radio with ipod docking station
futon or sofa bed that can be taken apart
freeview box
carpet offcuts

All mention fitting through a loft hatch, and the carpet is for laying on the floor - seems he wants to fit out his loft room for free! How greedy is that!
