to think £2 is a ridiculous price for a cupcake?

THe Swallow Bakery has opened in Cheltenham and I thought I'd have a cup of coffee and one of these cupcake things that everybody's been going on about (I don't get out much).

I was staggered that they cost £2 and beat a hasty retreat. Is it just me, or does anyone else think the recession can't have bitten too deeply when lots of people can/will pay this much. Also, what are they like, as I'm too mean to buy one?

They're £5 in the poncey N London patisserie near my work, count yourself lucky lass!

nameymcnamechange · 12/10/2010 14:09

Yanbu.

I think there was another thread on this cafe recently. Started by getorfmoiland.

I would honestly rather eat a slice of bread and butter than a cupcake. Infact, I can think of very few things I'm less likely to want to eat than a cupcake. I imagine they taste like a fairy cake with way too much buttercream icing. Yik!

ShatnersBassoon · 12/10/2010 14:09

Small luxuries do very well when times are hard.

It is too much for a fancy fairy cake though. They're always sickly anyway.

proudnscary · 12/10/2010 14:09

These cupcakes aren't disappointing Euphemia to be fair. The icing is lush.

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/10/2010 14:12

Ha! HAA!!

I went in there 2 weeks ago and started an AIBU thread about it, the prices (it was £2.20 per cake iirc, and £4 odd for a slice of devil's food cake).

Poncey wankers for staff as well.

Utter shite.

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/10/2010 14:14

My SIL works in Office Angels (next door to cupcake hell shop) and she said she went in there for lunch (roast beef couscous or some such shite) and it was vile, and the owner was rude.

My SIL is a gossip and would have slagged this place off to half of Cheltenham by now.

LynetteScavo · 12/10/2010 14:16

Cup cakes never taste as nice as they look.

Give me a 50p jam doughnut any day.

TattyDevine · 12/10/2010 14:16

I like GetOrfMoiLand's SIL.

reptile · 12/10/2010 14:17

I tried to find your thread before, but can't. Can you do a link?

She's great.

We were ranting about this place at the weekend.

Cheltenham is a poncey place anwyay, but I think this place takes poncedom too far.

SlightlyJaded · 12/10/2010 14:18

Our neighbour has just opened a tiny little cupcake shop on the high street (just take away - no sit down and eat option). She was telling me about it so I thought I would go in and offer support by buying something.

Cupcakes £2.50 - £3.25 each

so I thought ok then I'll get a small loaf of bread (the only other product they do are small fresh loaves)

Ready......??

Small olive ciabatta £3.95
Large Olive ciabatta £4.45

It's fucking bread FFS!

In the end I bought a £2.50 cupcake as it was the cheapest thing in the shop. Tasted shite as well - too sweet (and I can eat a 'family size' dairy milk in one sitting if the mood takes my fancy) Grin

SlightlyJaded · 12/10/2010 14:20

I'm with Lynette

addictedtoportlandbabies · 12/10/2010 14:20

what a pointless thread- if you think they are too expensive just don't bloody buy them.

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/10/2010 14:22

I once spent £25 on two (normal sized) lumps of cheese and a loaf of 'artisan' (pah) bread in a Cheltenham ponce cheese shop.

£25. I nearly died.

I paid it though, like the fool I am.

mice · 12/10/2010 14:22

Is this actually a shop? or is it the silver caravan type thing I saw parked near the literature festival at the weekend??

SlightlyJaded · 12/10/2010 14:22

On that basis addicted about 80 percent of the threads on AIBU are pointless....

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/10/2010 14:22

What a pointless post addicted, if you don't like a thread why bother wasting your time posting on it you silly twat

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/10/2010 14:23

Mice - no it is a shop, in the 60s office block at the top of the prom opposite LK Bennett.

reptile · 12/10/2010 14:23

A shop near the Town Hall

Last time I went into Chelthenham (I live fairly locally), I was struck by how depressing the town centre is these days. Really grim.

Have never been to the fancy cake shop though. I do like overpriced cake.

addictedtoportlandbabies · 12/10/2010 14:24

getorf - that was gratuitously rude. You obviously aren't very nice.

HalfTermHero · 12/10/2010 14:25

They look a lot better than they taste. Every now and then I buy one. Deep down I know it will be a disappointment.

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/10/2010 14:25

No, you're right addicted, I am utterly ghastly with no redeeming features.

NomDePlume · 12/10/2010 14:25

sorry for my random spelling of cheltenham - cold hands
