to think £2 is a ridiculous price for a cupcake?

THe Swallow Bakery has opened in Cheltenham and I thought I'd have a cup of coffee and one of these cupcake things that everybody's been going on about (I don't get out much).

I was staggered that they cost £2 and beat a hasty retreat. Is it just me, or does anyone else think the recession can't have bitten too deeply when lots of people can/will pay this much. Also, what are they like, as I'm too mean to buy one?

Cirencester, THAT'S proper poncetastic. Or Tetbury.

Have not been to Chelt for ages but would prefer a nice lardy cake from Leopold's. Although I fear they have shut now Sad

reptile why is nailsworth poncey? my aunty has got a cheese shop there :o

reptile · 13/10/2010 17:19

Well OK not totally that way, sorry, got a bit carried away, but it's definately moving in that direction, with fewer useful shops and more expensive knick-knack places.
I can still happily spend time there, but it's definately changed, like everywhere I guess

The best cupcakes I have ever tasted are the ones I make myself. Shop bought ones are: Too expensive, too dry and have far too much sickly icing on them.

Personally I think home made fairy cakes with a little buttercream are far nicer.

JinnyS · 13/10/2010 17:28

What's the difference between a fairy cake and a cupcake?

TheMittzressOfMystery · 13/10/2010 17:34

(also in Derbyshire)

at ''the uh being the sort of sound you'd make if someone punched you in the stomach and winded you.

A noise that people who continue to call them 'cupcakes' may start to make...''

I popped into Fortnum's this morning (just for a look as I was in town) and do you know a slice of take away chocolate cake was 3.95.

Galena · 13/10/2010 21:50

My friend told me today that 'The cupcakes in that new bakery in town, you know, the Swallow Bakery, are SOOOOO lush! They are to die for! And only £2!'

I chuckled and talked about this thread!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 14/10/2010 13:48

Well, to be fair, if they are literally worth dying for then they are probably worth £2. I will give her that. Have yet to come across a cupcake that met that standard, but hypothetically...

JinnyS
As far as I know cupcakes were originally the American term for what we know as fairy cakes.

Since they have become trendy they are now much larger (think large muffin) and have ridiculous quantities of sickly icing on top.

I think they are vastly overrated and look much nicer than they taste. To be fair I haven't bought many because the ones I have tried have been dry and stale tasting and I have had to scrape most of the icing off in order to "enjoy" the cake.

I think also, that because I enjoy baking and consider myself to be fairly competent at it, I find shop bought cakes, on the whole, to be rather disappointing.

JinnyS · 14/10/2010 15:43

Thanks for that Bunbaker. I'm a pretty keen baker myself recently - damn that Great British Bake Off programme - and I've never liked shop bought cakes that much.

Galena · 14/10/2010 15:55

Well, I was tempted in to see if they had anything for lunch today. The cupcakes were small, but looked pretty. However, nothing suitable for 18mo DD's lunch and nothing for me that suited my purse, so we went to Waitrose and had a gorgeous lunch!

Bunbaker · 14/10/2010 17:32

I loved that programme as well. Mary Berry is my baking hero.

pigletmania · 14/10/2010 19:25
