To complain about a pair of shoes which made me fall on my arse?

Back in June I bought some low/medium heeled shoes from the New Look teenage 915 range (they fit me well as I have skinny feet/ankles/calves). I wore them to a restaurant... walked there fine no problem but when I got in I skidded a little on their (wooden? polished?) floor. On being shown to our table I skidded again and this time when I tried to 'catch' myself, my supporting foot skidded as well and I fell down very ungracefully and made a loud squeal... highly embarrassing and very painful (see pic on profile). My hip hurt all evening and I couldn't sleep on that side for several days.

I think the combination of the shoes and the floor were to blame. The heel of the shoe is towards the middle of the heel rather than at the back (if that makes sense?) so not quite as stable as other shoes. The restauranteur made damn sure there was nothing on his floor that caused me to skid.

So I have receipt, photos and am just getting round to typing a letter to New Look. Not unreasonable is it? Not quite sure what I want them to do about it now mind.

YABU

It sounds like an accident to me.

2bloodyshoes · 12/10/2010 12:56

yabu
you have had them since June
and you slipped in October, sorry but doubt very much if you can blame the shoes

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/10/2010 12:57

Oh come on.

jeee · 12/10/2010 12:58

So how much compensation do you expect?

YABU
once you had skidded the first time, you should have held on to someone else in your party or walked v v slow.

you cannot blame the shoe maker for you losing your balance on fashion shoes

you cannot blame the restaruant for having a nice polished floor

you are being totally and utterly unreasonable

Dear New Look

I bought some stilletoes and slipped on a shiny floor, can you compensate me?

Dear customer

I suggest you wear flat shoes from now on or learn to walk in fashion shoes

HTH

chalk it up to experience.

i fell outside a hotel 18 mths ago, it was dark, could not see the edge of the pavement properly.. twisted my ankle badly, had to go to A&E, was on crutches, in agony .. v bad.

it was awful., but shit happens

it was an accident.

i hope you're feeling better soon

TheLemur · 12/10/2010 13:01

2bloodyshoes I slipped in June, but have only just sat down to type the letter. I have not worn them since June, I am too scared.

I don't want compo! Just maybe thought a refund or something might be in order. Am prepared to accept IABU though - it will save me typing the thing!

fashion victim.

Thingumy · 12/10/2010 13:02

YABVU

You knew the style of the shoe when you tried them on,so if they felt unstable why buy the sodding things?

thehairybabysmum · 12/10/2010 13:05

YABU and a silly mare to boot!!

faverolles · 12/10/2010 13:09

YABU
Is this for real?
I slipped in mud whilst wearing wellies. The mud went right through to my pants and stained them. Think I'll claim for some new ones from the wellyboot company Hmm

TheLemur · 12/10/2010 13:10

Ouch Lulumaam

OK OK I conceed, IABU and the letter shall not be typed

Thank you for the reality check Blush

YABU - and not really that bothered imo if the accident happened in June and only now are getting round to complaining.

getabloodygrip · 12/10/2010 13:12
Angry

One day, people in this country, like you, will realise that ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN.

We are all quite capable of taking some responsibility for our day to day existence and thinking through potential consequences of our own individual actions.

FFS.
Get real.

Ouch, your brusie looks so painful, you poor thing!

Definitley give the letter-typing a miss and chalk it up to experience, in my local shopping centre, EVERY pair of high heels I wear make me slip over, so I walk teeny-tiny steps like a pidgeon!! Don't give up on the shoes if you love them, just be very careful of what sort of floor you are walking on!

Notyetamummy · 12/10/2010 13:16

I think YABU, but there's no harm in trying.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 12/10/2010 13:16

Compensation culture is pretty awful....but many people do think ££££££s when they have an accident nowadays.

Glad you've seen sense OP.

QuizteamBleakley · 12/10/2010 13:26

YABU - but you are joking, right?

I'm always going arse over tit and 5 years ago bust my ankle (3 breaks, one dislocation, 24 titanium pins etc) because I was a dick - walking across cobblestones in heels. Accidents happen, suck it up! Perhaps you could see if the restaurant has CCTV - a quick submission to You've Been Framed could net you £250 Grin

YouHaveVeryMadBanners · 12/10/2010 13:53

Yabu! It was an accident!

My Mam used to always spray hairspray on the bottom of new shoes, so she would not slip, till they had scuffed a bit.

Fimbo · 12/10/2010 13:58

Scrape the bottom of the shoes with sandpaper - job done.

Is the picture taken when you did it?

Lulumaam · 12/10/2010 14:13

Grin you've taken this well, thelemur !

addictedtoportlandbabies · 12/10/2010 14:21

oh god - another loony contemplating a spurious and entirely undeserved personal injury claim.

CerealOffender · 12/10/2010 14:27

that sausage is disgusting, that combined with the bruise picture make your profile look like some sort of specialty fetish site.

MackerelOfFact · 12/10/2010 14:29

Writing a letter informing the manufacturers of a possible design flaw isn't quite the same as making a 'personal inury claim'. Confused

By all means write the letter if you're worried about the design of the shoe. There is plenty of middle ground between total apathy towards the incident and demanding compensation. I'd probably have let them know if it were me. YANBU.
