To be pissed off that the EDL are marching through my town tomorrow..well the march is banned but they are allowed a peaceful protest town is multi cultural and it makes me sad that this will cause unrest

Second that...my city is very multicultural and everyone gets on in my street. when a BNP candidate came down here to post leaflets he got chased back out again.

Hedgeblunder · 08/10/2010 23:51

Grrr. I just want to point out to Seymour that not all Asian people know each other by the way

Stretch · 09/10/2010 00:31

I'm in Leicester too.
People have been saying there is going to be a riot and they are looking forward to provoking the 'minorities' into rioting. Basically, if we can make them retaliate, they share half the blame, so to speak Sad

I am ashamed to be from Leicester. I love the multi-cultural city.

usualsuspect · 09/10/2010 00:39

me too Stretch Sad

Stretch · 09/10/2010 23:19

Well, it seemed to go ok. Obv, there should have been no violence whatsoever, but I think the police handled it really well.

Also glad to see the huge turnout for the peace protest! Grin

katieandisabelle · 09/10/2010 23:52

Eurgh the EDL! Make me feel sick.

My ex and I were watching a doc on bb3 about them when his old friend popped up! I always thought he was a twat! This just proved my point!

If they are all for peaceful protet ect then check out their FB page...Real peaceful :/

On the other hand though there is also a page MDL and they are both as bad as eachother on there.

Who raises these people to think this is the right way to behave!?

usualsuspect · 10/10/2010 17:52

Yay for Billy Bragg ...We are one Leicester event looks well attended...FUCK YOU EDL

OP posts:
newwave · 10/10/2010 19:21

EDL=mostly morons BUT I think they have every right to march/protest the same as any other group has. If they are seen to be breaking the law then arest those who are doing it.

No one would want to stop an Anti Nazi league march because the "class war" nutters are involved so lets drop the double standards.

fedupofnamechanging · 10/10/2010 19:35

In a free, democratic society, everyone should have the right to protest, whether you like their views or not. Once that is taken away, we no longer live in a free society. So, yes YABU

usualsuspect · 10/10/2010 19:40

Funny how the only ones arrested were from the Racist bigots EDl ..funny how they choose a multi culture city to cause unrest peacefully protest

They can fuck right off and use there freedom of speech in your nice towns maybe

OP posts:
fedupofnamechanging · 10/10/2010 19:46

That's the point though usualsuspect, if they wanted to demonstrate in my town, I would respect their democratic right to do so. Up to them really. We can't very well invade other peoples countries and impose democracy, if we don't respect peoples right to protest here.

newwave · 10/10/2010 19:49

usualsuspect

"They can fuck right off and use there freedom of speech in your nice towns maybe" that sounds just like the Islamics protesting about the Danish cartoons, "to hell with your freedom of speech"

Even fascists are entitled to freedom of speech within the law.

As for my town I doubt you would find many if any Muslims there.

usualsuspect · 10/10/2010 19:50

If you saw the state of my town centre yesterday if you heard the racist chant, saw the bottles, bricks and fireworks thrown at the police ,don't think you would so accommodating really ...

OP posts:
newwave · 10/10/2010 19:53

The EDL is mostly composed of the indiginous population of England surely they have the right to march in their own country.

Their viewpoint is not one i come close to agreeing with but they have the right to expouse it.

usualsuspect · 10/10/2010 19:57

Sure they have the right to protest peacefully...they don't do that though, and you know it

OP posts:
newwave · 10/10/2010 20:02

It takes two to have a row, in Barking at another march/meeting there were as many Muslims/far left nutters looking for a fight as memebers of the EDL.

cupcakesandbunting · 10/10/2010 20:13

They don't do it peacefully in my town either. They make a big song and dance about doing it peacefully on their FB page (that I regularly deface Grin) but on an EDL march day, the shops board up, no-one goes into town because they kick off, every time, without fail.

Knuckle-dragging dunderheads.

choufleur · 10/10/2010 20:15

What is the indigenous population then Newwave?

The march was stopped because of the risk of serious violence and protests from local communities.

It offends me at the amount of resources that have been used to police the demos and the clean up afterwards. It was the largest police operation in the county for around 25 years and police from something like 13 counties were brought in.

The UAF wouldn't have been in leicester yesterday if it wasn't for the EDL.

No-one has a right to march, only to have a static demonstration. That's why the home secretary stopped them marching.

newwave · 10/10/2010 21:08

Chou, I thought (correct me if I am wrong) that it was people who were born in this country as have a number of generations of the family.

"protests from local communities" does this mean those living in the community have the right to decide which protest goes ahead?.

I dont like the EDL or what it (appears) to stand for I do however support their right to march/demonstrate. If however as they claim "they are protesting against the Islamification of the UK" they would have my support but as we know they are anti Muslim and anti non white immigration so they dont have it.

usualsuspect · 10/10/2010 21:13

The local communities in Leicester work hard to keep the city united, thats white, black, muslim, hindus etc .but as you live in a nice all white town maybe you have little understanding of diverse culture

OP posts:
southeastastra · 10/10/2010 21:17

how crackers, so you would support a (for example) nazi march, as we live in a free society :S

doesn't work does it

newwave · 10/10/2010 21:20

usualsuspect. I was born and lived in Forest Gate in Londons east end until i was in my mid twenties a very mixed area so you are wrong in that respect.

Yes it is a nice little middle class town, clean, well kept houses, nice pubs and restaurants (sp), little social upset and I for one am very happy with it and whilst I would not be happy i would accept any group has the right to march/demonstrate in it.

Katerlina · 10/10/2010 21:22

agree - if the press would just ignore these groups and let them get on with their misguided protests, then no coverage would equal failed action. Doesn't happen though - first sniff of a bit of violence or criminal damage, the media go wading in...

newwave · 10/10/2010 21:25

Southeast, sorry but what part of "within the law" dont you understand.

I detest Tories, Islamic and christian fundementalists, the Tea Party, USA Republicans, Facists BUT I dont think I have the right to deny them a platform for their views abhorent as they are. You change hearts and minds by discourse not censorship.

usualsuspect · 10/10/2010 21:27

Ok then let them march and cause unrest in an other wise peaceful city ignore the racist shite they spout.....no chance of them coming to a town like yours new wave Wink
