She said I could Wink

"Apparently I'm supposed to post a sexually tinted description of where I keep my handbag as my status. Allegedly this will help raise awareness of breast cancer.

Information about how and when to examine ones breasts would obviously be of no use whatsoever. Neither would be mentioning the significance of breastfeeding in reducing ones risk of developing breast cancer.

OK"

Now, I don't know this 'friend' well (I've not seen her for years) but I like her a whole lot more than I already did after this.

When I said "screening", I meant being checked for the cancer gene. She still does all the normal checks, like self breast examination, cervical smears etc.

I don´t think raising awareness is what she needs either, because she probably knows more than most from personal experience. She has also worked as an HCA.

Still, talking about cancer, even in an off-hand way can´t be bad. I wouldn´t want us to return to the old days when you couldn´t mention the "c" word.

No, don't think it is particularly amusing but tbh but I think OP's friend was being pompous.

If the damn silly handbag thing makes one more person aware of breast cancer then thats fine. All I think of when reading the OP's friends post is "how smug", not about breast cancer.

And serious issues can be talked about with humour. Its not a crime.

nickelbabe · 09/10/2010 16:59

I don't think the OP's friend was being pomopus - she was just raising the awareness of the issue.

I put it on my status and a few friends "liked" it and a couple put positive comments.

If it gets one person thinking about it who wouldn't normally have done, it has worked IMO. Your mate is humourless, at worst intolerant of other people's fun....sounds like same applies to many others on here too.

sheesh this thread got heated...but at least I know what the status updates I have seen this week are about. I am personally not keen, not sure why, something about the nudge, nudge, wink, wink nature of it? I don't know.... But then I am not a massive fb fan, and can't abide half the things I read so I just put this down as one of those Hmm moments. I do think the reactions on here have been most enlightening though, and given me food for thought. Meanwhile I will have a clean towel and a hot dinner ready for dp when he finishes the Birmingham Half which he is crawling running in aid of cancer research to support his sister and my best friend who are currently being pumped full of drugs in a fight to beat breast cancer.
