She said I could Wink

"Apparently I'm supposed to post a sexually tinted description of where I keep my handbag as my status. Allegedly this will help raise awareness of breast cancer.

Information about how and when to examine ones breasts would obviously be of no use whatsoever. Neither would be mentioning the significance of breastfeeding in reducing ones risk of developing breast cancer.

OK"

Now, I don't know this 'friend' well (I've not seen her for years) but I like her a whole lot more than I already did after this.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 08/10/2010 23:06

So you assume that anyone who posts this or likes this is a moron who does nothing but simper and wear pink? And yet you think the "game" is demeaning to women? Hmm

I posted this on FB. I have also ran a marathon for Breast Cancer. But I must be a fluffy moron who knows nothing huh?

Whatever. You sit there and judge everyone else, and tell everyone that only quietly giving money without even cracking a smile is worthy, Cancel comic relief as well while you're at it.

MidnightsChild · 08/10/2010 23:06

Are you sure about taupe? What about cappuccino?

It's not about being humourless, really not. Or sneering.

Lots of posters said clearly why they object way down the thread. You're reading selectively.

DirtyMartini · 08/10/2010 23:09

Um, winter, short answer: no, we don't think that and nobody has suggested that.

DirtyMartini · 08/10/2010 23:11

Why oh why do people keep mentioning Comic Relief?

salizchap · 08/10/2010 23:13

No, but how could I possibly know that ? I have other things to do than spend my whole life reading each and every post down to the last letter, noting down the name and personal histories of each?

I just don't see the harm in a bit of harmless silliness online amongst so-called friends, that might, just, help in some small way in raising awareness.

In future, I won't bother putting anything on my FB status, as something is bound to offend someone's delicate sensibilities.

Plus my post wasn't directed at you in particular, so no need to try and send me on a guilt trip to win your argument.

MidnightsChild · 08/10/2010 23:13

Winter I'd be interested which of my posts said anything about assuming those who go the pink 'n fluffy way are simpering or a fluffy morons. I know a lot of cancer patients who choose that path, I most certainly wouldn't call them any such thing ... I have far too much respect and admiration for whatever path they choose to tread. Please don't put words into my mouth.

You are making my point. I am quietly saying that I prefer a different way, but you are calling me judgemental. If I'm going to put my judgey pants on, I'll let you know ... right at this moment, I'm simply expressing my view, my opinion, my preference ... something we're all entitled to I believe.

Falling

"Genuine status from a relative on fb today: ** likes it ruff n dirty on the floor pmsl!!!

Clearly she is desperately keen that we all check our breasts!"

This post of yours makes me think you are looking down on your friend for joining in the meme, and judging her. fwiw I have now deleted mine as I don't want people to be genuinely upset by it like Midnight, but just judging someone like you seem to be doing is a bit harder to swallow. Is it one or the other - join in a silly game OR take cancer seriously, for you?

MidnightsChild · 08/10/2010 23:19

snoozathon there's no need for you to delete your status, many of my friends are participating in this. I'm just choosing not to and I wouldn't presume to dictate how others behave. I'm just here expressing that its not for me and that I don't like being told off for not being a better sport, or not having a sense of humour about this (although I would stress that you are not guilty of this).

DirtyMartini · 08/10/2010 23:20

As for the colour thing: no not taupe but why not, say, a pink and a white model of each item, both with a donation to the cause? Double the chances that someone will buy it.

Or lipsticks: sorry but how many adult women with the income to buy a fifteen pound lipstick actually suit bright pink? If there was say a neutral or a red one available alongside it as part of the same promotion, problem solved.

Getting away from the point of thread now though.

cardibach · 08/10/2010 23:22

I posted a status about my bag. I assure you it did not distract me from making my regular, monthly, Direct Debit to Cancer Research.
It did make me, my friends and a whole load of other people think about Breast Cancer in Breast Cancer Awareness month.
It may well be that most people who posted the status had no intention of giving any money or checking their breasts, but it didn't make them any LESS likely to.

hmc · 08/10/2010 23:23

Oh listen to you all (well not 'all') - can't you have a dicussion without ranting?

snoozathon · 08/10/2010 23:23

This thread has made me (and hopefully others) consider it though and I've decided I'd rather not be a cause of upset.

I find it interesting though why people object though who don't find it a trigger.

Seems to me it's mostly more snobbery about sexual statii related to feminist viewpoints that it's demeaning to women to post in a suggestive way, than anything more. I can't think of another reason why Falling posted her friend's one, other than to make us do this face Hmm

thegirlwiththemouseyhair · 08/10/2010 23:26

You wouldn't post if you didn't know why you were doing it - would you? Hmm
So -let's assume that everyone who does knows that it's about raising awareness so just by the fact that they are doing it, they are - IFYSWIM

DirtyMartini · 08/10/2010 23:28

Lol at saliz having better things to do than read the thread before throwing insults around at the cancer survivors

snoozathon · 08/10/2010 23:28

Is breast cancer like church, and we can't smile when mentioning it?

DirtyMartini · 08/10/2010 23:30

Thegirl, someone on here said they posted it not knowing what it was, just for a laugh.

Nellykats · 08/10/2010 23:30

snoozathon, you're really not funny

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 08/10/2010 23:30

You can't have brown, I'm using that, I'm going to start one of these for Bowel Cancer. Nobody writes FB games for Bowel Cancer do they? Nobody runs marathons in brown knickers like the pink bras do they? Or have brown bottled water?

Meh, whatever. Personally i'm just happy when people are talking about charities, its often the first step to giving money. And money is whats needed.

snoozathon · 08/10/2010 23:30

I enjoy joining in memes and watching them develop and spread - this one might raise awareness of bc, it might not. Why's it such a problem? Genuine question.

MidnightsChild · 08/10/2010 23:31

It made me laugh too DirtyMartini ... some days, you just can't get the breaks! Grin

Oh & SalFresco I've just seen your last post (at 23.04.41) ... I completely agree with you.
