ARRRGGGHH!!! I spent the day thinking what will this child eat? So I opted for mince and Potatoes (Not a vegetarian) fairly safe option I thought.
The friend wouldn't even try it, not only that he couldn't even use a knife and fork at 7 years!!
WTF. My DC are told to least try something before dismissing it.Maybe it's me.

'I think the whole give them "safe" food attitude is terrible.

If we teach kids from a young age that they only need to eat "kid friendly" food, how will they ever learn to eat normal food'

Padmehum - that's rubbish. 'Ever' is a very long time. Lots and lots of children eat very plain, bland, 'safe', call it what you will-food and the vast majority of those eventually become more adventurous.

It sounds like your children are good eaters and that's great....but really fussy eaters are born and not made and that's been made clear by many posts on here showing differences between siblings who have been brought up the same.

I'm quite partial to the odd fish finger - if you get good quality ones they're not bad at all. And oven chips....? Potaotes and olive oil!

If you were inviting people round for a dinner party, you would ask if there is anything your guests didn't like and avoid those things....it's only polite. So why not do the same with children? If I have a child round to play and stay for tea, it's my job to feed them - I would feel awful if they went home with nothing. And if you happen to have a fussy kid over who wants fish fingers and chips - then give them that! It's only for one day - your own children are hardly going to suffer.

Yes notso - the meat part of a cumberland pie is irrelevant, it can be either beef or lamb; then potato, then cheese/breadcrumbs for the topping.

Fellatio - she used to put baked beans in chilli as well. Of course, I've had her committed now.

Shirleyknot · 08/10/2010 11:13

That would be fine herbietea, if you weren't being absolutely disgusting by putting peas in it.

Honestly, I don't know what is the matter with everyone today.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 08/10/2010 11:13

This thread has made me remember the episode of Friends where Rachel tries to make a trifle, as a special dessert, but turns over two pages at once, and somehow the trifle ends up with layers of savoury mince and peas in it, under the whipped cream!

Joey, of course, eats it all and asks for seconds, but someone else mutters that it 'tastes like feet!' Grin

Oh fgs - it is not your job to educate the palate of other people's children. How arrogant can you get????

MaMoTTaT · 08/10/2010 11:16

god - no - no celery - it's pointless

scotsmuminengland · 08/10/2010 11:26

I think people are being very snobbish about mince and potatoes.
I cook mine with carrots and onions in a lovely gravy sometimes with peas. I always use beef mince. Was brought up on it.
It isn't slop food or vile.

uh hello? no cutlery....NO CUTLERY??? what do they eat at home?

bloody street urchins

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 08/10/2010 11:31

For heavens' sake - safe food does not just mean chicken nuggets and fish fingers - though far too many restaurants make this mistake too - I used to cheer if I found a childrens' menu that didn't consist of pizza/sausage/nuggets/burger, chips and beans!

What is wrong with serving a visiting child home made pizza, home made burgers and wedges, chicken drumsticks or chicken tortillas?

FellatioNelson · 08/10/2010 11:36

I have read threee threads this morning all mentioning celery. That's not right is it? I mean I like celery, but even so, there are limits.

MaMoTTaT · 08/10/2010 11:44

snigger at you cheering if you found a menu without those things and then you serving some of them at home Grin

(please don't slap me at the meet-up Wink)

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 08/10/2010 11:48

Grrrr - MaMo - I should have made clear that it was the 'fresh from the freezer', processed burger/pizza/fishfingers that I objected to - not my nice, homemade, virtuous ones. Blush

Damn you for finding that loophole - damn you I say!! Grin

And I promise not to slap you at the meetup!

duchesse · 08/10/2010 11:49

I used to spend bloody hours crafting healthy chicken nuggets for such children (breaded and fried chicken goujons ffs) only to have them wolfed down in seconds or left. One boy was at least vaguely interested in the process. In the end I decided the better option was to get them to decorate their own pizzas- you can make the bases and stick em in the freezer in advance and then just give em a load of peppers, cheese, tomatoes etc to bung on em. Keeps em busy for over 1/2 hour as well.

Aitch · 08/10/2010 11:49

you people are being really weird about mince and potatoes. i can only assume that you are all terrible cooks. Grin

MaMoTTaT · 08/10/2010 11:49

Hullygully · 08/10/2010 11:51

pizza or pasta are the only safe options.

duchesse · 08/10/2010 11:51

fwiw I think mince and potatoes sounds lovely. Just don't make the mistake I once made with visiting children of putting garlicky olive oil in your mash.

Hullygully · 08/10/2010 11:52

mince is beyond disgusting. We always called it bobblemeat.

MaMoTTaT · 08/10/2010 11:53

you've obviously been buying the wrong sort of mince then hully Wink

Aitch · 08/10/2010 11:53

i find mince and potatoes an excellent way of getting kids to eat phenomenal amounts of sliced carrots, because they have been cooked in teh gravy they are magnificent.

actually, keema is bloody lovely too. although not for kiddie visitors perhaps.

Hullygully · 08/10/2010 11:53

I haven't had bobblemeat since it was forced upon me as a hapless lass.

And as for braising steak..

duchesse · 08/10/2010 11:54

Hully- I knitted a lovely linen/cotton yarn blanket in garter stitch for DD3, in a lovely shade of dusky pink. My son instantly named it "the mincemeat blanket".
