ARRRGGGHH!!! I spent the day thinking what will this child eat? So I opted for mince and Potatoes (Not a vegetarian) fairly safe option I thought.
The friend wouldn't even try it, not only that he couldn't even use a knife and fork at 7 years!!
WTF. My DC are told to least try something before dismissing it.Maybe it's me.

OP posts:
colditz · 07/10/2010 21:49

I enjoy many things but boiled potatoes is one thing I don't like. And no, when I was seven,. I would NOT have 'just tried them'.

AlgebraKnocksItUpANotchBAM · 07/10/2010 21:50

mince cooked in milk?! Confused

frogetyfrog · 07/10/2010 21:50

And I dont know of a single child in my massive family who will eat shepherds pie!

I was force fed shepherds pie in the olden days!! In my mind things have moved on! Same with liver!

violethill · 07/10/2010 21:50

The OP didn't say shepherds pie, which is a dish containing mince, potato, plus lots of other ingredients to make it tasty! Mince and potato on a plate is not the same as shepherds pie.

And I still don't understand the OP, it makes no sense. What was the shit that the OP's child did (or didn't?) eat?

thisisyesterday · 07/10/2010 21:50

i think the OP is implying that the alternative is to go with "safe" food, which DOES tend to be what we would class as junk food

as now backed up by several other posters

i think you should be able to serve up whatever you would normally serve up. if they're extremely fussy and the parent has warned you in advance then yes, it's unreasonable to cook something you know they won't eat.
but if not...

TheCrackFox · 07/10/2010 21:50

I haven't eaten mince and potatoes since I was a kid and I have no desire to revisit the experience.

FallingWithStyle · 07/10/2010 21:50

Nothing wrong with mince and potatoes - think its more of a scottish thing though?
I can imagine if its not something you ate then it would sound a bit odd.
Yummy though, especially with some mashed swede!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/10/2010 21:51

YANBU - mince and potatoes is gorgeous. Yum.

thisisyesterday · 07/10/2010 21:52

i know she didn't say shepherds pie but it's the same bloody ingredients isn't it

jeez

what's with the whole "i can eat mashed potato, but not boiled potato"

IT'S A FUCKING POTATO!

MrsMoosickle · 07/10/2010 21:52

And poorly cooked mince can be really grainy if not cooked in milk!

Milk? Really frogetyfrog? Eurgh, now that does sound vile!

CharlieBoo · 07/10/2010 21:53

Mince and mash is my fave!!!! I would have eaten it and asked for more lol!! However ds would not have touched it- he hates mince!

For my little guests I dish up sausages, fish fingers, pasta and sauce with grated cheese, things most kids will eat without a second glance.

thisisyesterday · 07/10/2010 21:53

i need some wine

violethill · 07/10/2010 21:54

Er.... nope, I wouldn't eat shepherds pie unless it had a few a few more ingredients than potato and minced lamb.

MrsDinky · 07/10/2010 21:54

DS 6 will not eat potatoes in any shape or form. I agree - plain pasta with sides they can help themselves to is the way to go.

FallingWithStyle · 07/10/2010 21:54

Wel I have the fussiest child I ahve ever met. Seriously, its depressing. But he has never eaten a chip, or a chicken nugget, or pizza, or beans or any of the other stuff that gets wheeled out as proof of fussiness on these threads.

The day he eats a chip I may just combust with joy.

Its far too easy to a) assume if a child doesnt like x that they only like crap food, and b)that if a child is fussy they, er, only like crap food.

thefirstmrsDeVere · 07/10/2010 21:55

Kids over = pasta with cheese.

Not my job to educate the palates of other people's kids.

Remotew · 07/10/2010 21:55

Mince and potatoes (and onion) is shepherds' pie but with beef mince. My DD loved and so did all her of friends that came to tea, always served it with veg. We are having this tomorrow.

Tip out some cheese and onion crisps on top to brown it in the oven, delicious.

TattyDevine · 07/10/2010 21:56

Mince and potato is a little retro but hardly vile unless you are as picky as the kid.

Surely this is what Pizza was invented for though. Food fascist? Do a woody homemade version all nice and hessian sandally with lentils and sawdust, and cheeseless cheese melted on top

FFS etc Hmm

mamatomany · 07/10/2010 21:56

I make mince and potatoes but i call it cottage pie sounds so much more appealing

ConnorTraceptive · 07/10/2010 21:57

Mash potatoes made with full fat milk and butter lovely

Lone boiled potato - grim

thisisyesterday · 07/10/2010 21:57

well as the OP didn't state exactly what went into her mince how do you know it didn't have extras in it?

muggglewump · 07/10/2010 21:57

I like mince and potatoes, prefer it with dumplings though.

Still wouldn't feed it to a visiting child, nor spag bol come to think of it, or even sausages.
People make/buy things so differently that you'll be bound to get it wrong.

thisisyesterday · 07/10/2010 21:58

you put butter on your boiled potatoes! not grim, yummy!

frogetyfrog · 07/10/2010 21:59

Yes cooked in milk. If you add a little milk to the pan when frying off mince it gets rid of the graininess apparently. Tried it on dh and he commented on how nice it was! But he is the only one in our family to eat mince - rest of us hate it.

Please everybody - dont assume that fussy kids eat crap at home. I have 3 dc and one eats really well, two are very very fussy. They eat a well balanced diet but you would never know that if they visited you as all you could give them is chips (one of them - other hates them) or beans! That is unless you are prepared to spend hours cooking homemade tomato soup to an exacting recipe, a form of pasta sauce to an exact recipe etc etc. There is no reason why two of my dc would be fussy and the other not as they are all brought up the same and on the same food. It cant be bad parenting.

I have 2 very close friends (adults) who eat severly restricted diets due to fussiness. It is not a new thing that kids are fussy eaters. I was very very fussy as a child but eat all vegetables now and practically everything else (apart from mince!)

Fussy eater does not automatically = eats crap.

MissDolittle · 07/10/2010 21:59

Confused as to how you spent the whole day thinking of what to cook and came up with something from the 1940s.

Confused as to why you have to feed your dc shit. Is mince and potatoes the only non shit meal?

My dcs hardly ever eat potatoes because I can't be arsed to prepare them. We are forrin though so people make allowences.
