YANBU, I can't watch her shows at all. Can't stand the soft-porn/cooking combo. Obviously there's a Nigella cult out there, that or they're her relatives.

chilipepper27 · 03/10/2010 17:47

love how she has a camera in her house ready to catch her raiding the fridge in a posh nightie at midnight

Careybliss · 03/10/2010 19:30

Then again, maybe a Fabio cooking show?

BelligerentGhoul · 03/10/2010 19:38

Silly title and certainly not bovine but yes, she does smirk. I think she's beautiful but much prefer her in photographs to on-screen. Love reading her; can't stand watching her - and her recipes are really hit and miss.

scaryteacher · 03/10/2010 19:45

She is no fool - she is very rich due to her own efforts and an astute business woman as well.

Her recipes work, and whilst I am first and foremost a Delia fan, Nigella comes a close second, especially for the recipes in Express and Feast that feature regularly in my house.

A friend of mine did the turkey in brine and spices and said it went from looking like frozen roadkill to a thing of beauty that tasted delicious.

magnoliamom · 03/10/2010 20:05

You may not like her tv persona, but she's definitely not a fool. She's well read, a very talented food writer and draws from a wide range of influences.

From her books, it seems like she enjoys a bit of camp, I highly doubt she takes any of the tv stuff very seriously - it's just meant to entertain.

I cringed when I saw the word 'bovine' in the title of this thread. Just unnecessary. You can criticize her, or anyone else, without resorting to name calling.

Bonsoir · 03/10/2010 20:41

I have several of Nigella's cook books and I think they are great reference - she is the one I turn to for Christmas, Rosh Hashana, big parties etc.

I haven't seen her on TV much but I don't like watching TV cooks much and she is no exception to the rule.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 03/10/2010 20:45

I think she is beautiful! she is like a lovely chocolate cake herself.

JoanHolloway · 03/10/2010 20:45

I absolutely love How to Eat. It is gaffer taped together and stays in my kitchen.

Bovine is just so lazy... And she clearly is not a fool. I'll give you smirking though.

angelberry · 03/10/2010 21:47

I quite like Nigella, but think reactions on here are a bit OTT.

So we can say 'cunting' in a thread title, but we can't say 'bovine'?

The OP is just having a bit of a rant about a celebrity! Someone who chooses to be in the public eye, makes money from the image she has created and surely won't give shite about a bit of criticism on a random website!

MNers are a bit odd.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/10/2010 20:07

I love her.

I think her TV image is just a self-parody tbh. She is certainly astute enough to know how she is viewed.

Her writing is far better than her TV show. She is very astute on the historical and familial effects of cooking.

I remember her interviwed once, she talked about a conversation she had with Julie Burchill, where Julie admitted that she didn't give a shit about cooking. Nigella surmised that she is obsessed with cooking and creating a happy home as she was very unhappy and had a prickly homelife growing up. Those who had a happier upbringing (like Julie B) generally obsess a lot less about having everything perfect. I think there is a lot of sense in that.

Minione · 04/10/2010 20:31

I love her! I have cooked 2 of her recipes this weekend (from her new book) and her books are the ones I turn to again and again.

Dh claims to dislike her and her food but watches her programmes(hmmm, i wonder why?) and eats her recipes!

She is a gorgeous, intelligent and talented woman. FFS, she has an English degree from Oxbridge (not sure which) so she can hardly be stupid. The first time I ever saw her was on the late review talking about Jean Rhys' 'Wide Sargasso Sea'. Her books are a joy to read and her passion for literature clearly comes through in her writing. I also think she has a good attitude towards food and is a really warm and likeable person.

Oh and whoever said only lesbians fancy her Confused.

Anyway

lovechoc · 04/10/2010 20:36

wish I looked as good as Nigella tbh...YABU, OP!

Saw her programme at the weekend. She does flirt with the camera alot but I'm sure that's all part of her act when doing her cookery shows.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 04/10/2010 22:05

I've met her (at a book signing - I'm not a MoverAndShaker) and she's utterly beautiful and actually quite small.

yousaidit · 04/10/2010 22:37

Didn't she get revealed as buying in recipes from a cook in france for one of her series / books?

And one time she coked a pork chop, plonked it on the plate then sat on the sofa with the plpate perched one knee with just a fork to eat it!!!!! How the feck does anyone eat a pork chop with just a fork with a plate precariously wobbling on one knee? I mistrusted her very much after that!

yousaidit · 04/10/2010 22:38

cooked, not coked ffs Blush

FetchezLaVache · 04/10/2010 22:42

I love her, I love her recipes, I love her writing, I love watching her on TV. I've got a proper crush on her, in case you couldn't tell, and if that makes me a lesbian I am proud to be sapphic! And she's not gormless, for heaven's sake. She's gorm ful.

Ninjacat · 04/10/2010 22:54

yousaidit she does seem a little medicated Wink

donkeyderby · 04/10/2010 22:54

She pulls the most ludicrous facial expressions in her TV programme - quite bizarre smiling/gurning/'come to bed eyes' stuff going on. She's toff totty and as such probably hasn't had to make so much of an effort in life.

She makes me feel like Caroline Aherne in the 'Royale Family' two Christmases ago. Useless at cooking and artless and clodhoppery. But I think I would like her if I met her. She seems to have a mischievious twinkle in her eyes as if she knows she is bullshitting us all.

Why does she put peanut butter in every other dish? Disgusting stuff

jtop · 05/10/2010 20:23

Blimey, I can't believe that discussion went on so long !

So, that Jamie Oliver - what a ......
