Fucking ToysRUs - will not refund an item that does not do what it's supposed to!

Bought a baby monitor from them for £40. Have tried and tried for a week to get it to work but the alarm on it keeps going off which means it has lost contact. Have tried it all over the house and it still will not work.

Took it back today and after waiting 20 mins to get served, they took it out the back for half an hour to test it. Apparently it works for them so it is not faulty so they will not refund it Hmm.

When I said that it does not work in my home (which is your average semi in a residential area) so therefore does not do what it's supposed to do, the 'manager' said it does not matter and there must be a problem in my house Hmm. She actually argued with me Angryand seemed to be accusing me of lying ffs. When I said that the 'customer service' was disgusting, she rolled her eyes and sighed. I am now lumbered with a monitor which does not work and will have to buy another one.

AIBU in thinking that they are absolute crap!

Threaten trading standards

bethjeff · 25/09/2010 17:34

Have a look at this, if you are still sure that it is faulty then take it up with trading standards- write them a letter and take it in to give to the manager and advise them that you are aware of your rights.

Check how far it says the monitor should give contact for and any info about obstructions to the signal and make sure that you are compliant

Goandplay · 25/09/2010 17:34

YANBU - Have you spoken to Trading Standards? I've had to do this twice recently and they tell you exactly where you stand and what to do next. I have had some really good results with their help.

bethjeff · 25/09/2010 17:34

Forgot to add the bloody link Grin

Trading standards for your area

Confuzzeled · 25/09/2010 17:35

Go over her head, write a letter to the store manager and to the head office of the company. Tell them your going to trading standards if you don't get a refund.

DaisyDaresYOU · 25/09/2010 17:36

I had this with smyths. If id of known about trading standard id of threatend them with it.You have rights,go onto trading standards and find out what you can do

lifeas3plus1 · 25/09/2010 17:36

No you are not BU.

Toys r us are simply crap for that.

I had a friend buy a buggy from them. The brakes didn't work and a couple times the buggy went flyin down a hill/the bus. She took it back, they kept it for testing. Tested it on their nice flat floor and said it was fine. They then refused to try it on the hill right outside their front door.

She ended up going to tranding standards.

Took over 8months for them to agree to a refund.

BigMommaOf4 · 25/09/2010 17:38

Ooh did'nt think of Trading Standards. Will contact them as she pissed me off so much Angry. Thanks all.

you can go through the manufacturer rather than the retailer for a refund if you don't want to go through the trading standards rigamarole.

musicposy · 25/09/2010 17:39

Something has to be fit for the purpose it is sold for or they have to refund. So whether it works in their nice open warehouse is irrelevant - it's sold to be used in a house. If it doesn't work in a house it's not fit for purpose. Phone trading standards if quoting this gets you nowhere.

cece · 25/09/2010 17:41

They are indeed very arsey about any refunds and I now don't buy anything from them because of it.

I also advise my friends who don't have kids not to buy from there either. They used to get things for my DC's presents and then I would have trouble if they got a double present and so on.

DameGladys · 25/09/2010 17:43

Yes I emailed Tomy when ours stopped working having had it two years (I decided they should really work for longer than that - based on not much really).

They asked me to send it to them which I did, and then just sent me a brand new one. I've no idea whether they tested it - probably not worth their while.

I was v impressed.

BigMommaOf4 · 25/09/2010 17:44

Was thinking afterwards that I will always buy anything like that from Argos in future. They are very good at refunding on faulty stuff I have found.

ReadMyLips · 25/09/2010 17:49

John Lewis will match all local shop prices and you'd never get that from them.

catinthehat2 · 25/09/2010 17:53

Did you buy it via credit card? If Toys R US (no I don't buy anything there because I dislike their attitude to customers) are still being arsey, maybe get your refund via the CC issuer.

GeekOfTheWeek · 25/09/2010 17:58

Toys r us are shit.

Customer service is none existent ime.

Trading standards and sale of goods act.

Go to jl in future!

prozacfairy · 25/09/2010 18:35

YANBU I used to work for them and they are incredibly tight fisted for this kind of thing, so much so I wouldn't spend more than £20-30 on any one item incase there was a problem with it.

Go above this manager to the store manager. most managers usually can't be arsed with the hassle so cave in.

QuizteamBleakley · 25/09/2010 20:36

This may help... Naughty Geoffrey

Cher87 · 25/09/2010 21:17

ooh this is interesting, I am planning to take back my electric bottle warmer plugged it in and it burnt out! Glad I saw this, at least I can prepare myself for a fight! :)

zipzap · 25/09/2010 23:59

Try taking a video of it not working in your house and take it back, showing them the video and asking them to tell you exactly how to get it to work given what it is doing in your house.

Also ask them if they are being arsey to give you their name, the name of their manager, the name and address of their regional manager and likewise for their national manager so that you can send the complaint in.

obviously cc it to trading standards and to the manufacturers of the baby monitor as well.

good luck!

I would never, ever buy anything from Toys R Us again.

Years ago I bought DH a Playstation, and specifically asked if I could buy the games anywhere. Yes yes, they said, no problem.

DH opened it on Christmas Day and blow me down, it's actually a Japanese one, has a Japanese-region chip and the only place in the whole country you can buy games that will work in it is Toys R Us.

They are retailing scum.

cumfy · 26/09/2010 06:31

You should just demand a refund. It's faulty.

Trouble is they're paid to be there all day and will fob you off ad infinitum - water off a duck's back to them.

I'm having same problem with non-waterproof "waterproof" boots at the moment. They leak but "their tests" say they don't Hmm.

claig · 26/09/2010 13:04

hope it all works out for you. I agree with you BigMommaOf4, I only ever buy anything like that from Argos. Fantastic company, no quibbles, they will give your money back or exchange for any reason. I bought a TV once from a well-known electrical retailer and found the screen was slightly too small for my living room. Went back and asked to upgrade it to larger screen size. They wouldn't let me, so I was stuck for years with a TV that I wasn't really happy with. Never, ever bought anything from that shop again, so they are shooting themselves in the foot. You wouldn't get that treatment from Argos.

ShrinkingViolet · 26/09/2010 13:10

I took Toys R Us to court years back because they didn't deliver a climbing frame, then refused to refund me. Court found against them, they still didn't pay up, so I sent in bailiffs.
Annoyingly the bailiffs and their payment crossed, so I was £50 out of pocket for the bailiff fees, but it was so worth it Grin.
